Their highly anticipated event just ended, and it was no more exciting than Apples. A mediocre phone (Galaxy Nexus) with specs no better than the GS2 besides the 720p screen, and the rest of the event focused on software. (Android 4.0) looks like some must needed polish for android and some new features...nothing too exciting. But I'm sure no older phones will see ICS until mid 2012, if at all. I guess next year will be the big year for smartphones...

I don't know about you, but Ice Cream Sandwich has me excited, almost to the point of returning my iPhone 4S. It really seems to speak worlds about Android's new direction under Matias Duarte. Little features like the Quick Response (swiping up to reveal a list of quick, pre-written texts to send in case you have to decline a call) and saving web pages in the browser are useful and very much wanted.

I'd say the best part of their presentation was their voice transcription being a complete fail.

Goes to show you how advanced Siri really is. +1 for iPhone:D

Yup, it was happening in Hong Kong. Well it looks like I'll be sticking with the 4S. The new Galaxy phone was the only thing tempting me, but since it's nothing special I'll stick with apple. Not to mention its not coming out til November sometime and it's looking like it might be a Verizon exclusive...

Complete fail? It got 1 word wrong. Siri does that too. The face-unlock failed though, which is less than desirable.

yup I was impress with the new nexus and ICS.
Need to sleep over it and see if I am cancelling my ip4s.

The Galaxy Nexus just eliminated the last advantage that iPhone 4S had, creen resolution.

Lol yea that part of the event was sad. You think they would have rehearsed bits that would actually work, like Apple. At least make it look good...

I was completely underwhelmed. 4.0 is nothing more than bug fixes, some pieces copied from iOS, and a few new ones that didn't even work (face unlock).

The Nexus is meh? Screen looks okay. Other than that, not much of a wow.

I kind of liked ICS, but there were some let downs.

They failed two demos. Face recognition and texting to decline the call....

W/e.

After all, it was about the phone. I like the Super Amoled HD screen, but that's about it. I am not impressed with the processor, Camera and etc.

"It didn't quite get it right (it said "Map" and not "man")"

"It also then said "Yahoo" for some reason. Oops."

Both from engadget's liveblog.

I'm sorry, you don't do that ON STAGE showing your flagship product to the world. Then follow it directly up with the face unlock failure. Is this amateur hour?

Like you saw how nicely done the demo was for Siri on stage and that video was sent to everybody and got the world talking? Google, take notes.

Lol so true

Huh? It worked perfectly except the first word since he started talking before the microphone activated.

And Apple has had its share of failed demos at its product launch events too, by the way:

Am I the only one that thinks the screen is just to large?? I guess for Android users 5 inches is the holy grail??

Reminds me of the BSOD from a M$ conference back when they were showing off 95/98. But as a whole disappointing. There wasn't that killer wow moment I was looking for. The face unlock is cool. The voice capture isn't as impressive as Siri. I'm not thrilled about the Android Beam. I'm not touching another persons phone with my phone. No thanks.

As for the rest, it's a bunch of polish that should have been there in the first place. The new Folders system reminds me too much of iOS. The "Magazine" thing and the fonts remind me too much of Windows Phone 7 (which I do like coming from the Zune Software). It seems like they took a some of this, some of that, and polished stuff. Which is all fine and good, but for ICS, I was expecting more. Also, during the Galaxy Nexus bit, 4.65" screen? Way to big for a phone. And the 720p native resolution of ICS has me worried. If done well, sweet, but if it inspires a bunch of 4.65" screens, sorry, i'm out.

Android 4.0 does look nicer visually. I give them credit for that cause it was long overdue.

On another note .......... RIM was the real losers today. I heard people actually feel asleep at the keynote.

I'd rather see that than a have a product demonstrated performing better than what it actually does in real life. Siri is great, but it's not perfect.

I too find the screen a tad large. I like to be able to operate the phone one handed w/o having to adjust my hand much. To each their own.
