The Nexus phones are.

This is true to a certain extent, but they still have to build the OS to support other devices, it's not as if Nexus phones are running a SPECIAL version of Android.

And either way, Apps don't share the same luxury.

As a new 4S owner... and having been an iPhone user since 3G launched... I was definitely impressed with the ICS demo tonight.

I've got 30 days to make up my mind... but so far I highly doubt I'll be returning my 4S for a Galaxy Nexus or Droid Razr...

Have you seen that thing? Almost identical spec's as the prime, but with a slightly smaller 4.3" display but look how thin!

In technology, there is always some gimmick or some goal to thrive for.

There was a time when manufacturers competed in having the thinnest phone. There was a time when they went on having the best cameraphone. There was a time when people wanted real QWERTY. Then we moved onto the OS and tons of apps thanks to iPhone. Eventually these are phases and things get played out.

I think the next gen will be a battle of having the best screen display. Even at under 5 inches for us to even notice a difference if it is 720p or not, that is the new gimmick and goal to thrive for. Apple ignited it with the "Retina Display" marketing. And to me, it still is the best screen out there but it is expected to have a high ppi like that if it only has 3.5 inches to begin with! The XPERIA X1 came out in 2008 and that had a 312ppi but it only had a screen of 3 inches!

The three companies that know how to make HDTV's is Sony, Samsung, and LG. I need to see Sony wake up here because they lost their way for the last decade or so. I know about their Bravia screens in phones in Japan a few years ago, but they have failed around the world. Taking over SE is a start. The next battle is having a portable HDTV in our pocket. Just think about five years ago when HDTV cost a fortune even at 720p. Now we get a phone with contract for under $299 and can put them in our pocket.

That is the first thing we see in a touchscreen. The screen and the quality of its display. That is what we are looking at all day. And this resolution and ppi is one of the few areas we can still improve on for all cell phones. In tablets, don't be surprised once we get screens with Blu-ray quality. On cameras in our phones is already on 1080p level. The quality of the screen is going to be the new bragging rights for a new phone. Like when you wanted to show off your brand new HDTV to your family. People will flash that AWESOME looking screen in their phone like a shiny new credit card. This is why the future of phones will get bigger to give room for that screen size. To show more clarity and make that higher resolution and color pop out at you.

Screen display = new WOW factor and bragging rights among cell phones

From increasing the megapixel count in our phones to increasing the resolution, contrast ratio, screen size, and ppi.

I think these treads are made to satisfy the justification of owning a iPhone 4s. View is completely biased with no knowledge of ever using the product.

I have to say, the buttonless design is looking very nice. I was never a fan of capacitive button, but with this the risk of accidental presses can be avoided. This is something I wouldn't mind Apple and Microsoft stealing :)

I want one. I'll probably purchase one and supplement it with my iPhone 4S. I have a need to tinker and this phone will solve it.

I find the design aesthetic of ICS and Honeycomb pretty ugly in all honesty. Tron is probably the best word to describe it.

I actually thought the one of the most important announcements they made was in regards to how ICS will have a universal app framework (I think I'm wording that correctly) across all of their devices. There's a lot of fragmentation in the Android world, so I thought this was great news for developers and customers alike. I really think we'll see the Android App Marketplace improve once developers can work under a more universal framework.

Aside from that, I'm intrigued by the screen size of the Nexus Prime. It seems way too large to me, but I think Google wants to go in the direction of having a tablet experience on what is still a phone.

Someone mentioned Vlingo earlier, and honestly, I think if you combined Vlingo with Siri, we'd have a really awesome product. The first two things I'd take from Vlingo would be its voice-learning ability and its voice activation. Even though your phone has to be plugged in to use voice activation, when you're driving, this is nice to have. Without ever looking down or pressing anything, I can say "Vlingo, wake up" (or whatever custom phrase you create) and it's ready for prompting. It's convenient and safe. I also like how you can have it automatically read your texts to you as you receive them. Either way, I like how 'speaking' to Siri is more natural, how much more information you can pull up, and how much more you can do with Siri.

Anyway, I'm not eligible for a phone upgrade until next year so I guess I have the luxury in seeing how this all plays out before I shell out a couple hundred bucks. I'm really interested in seeing if Android and ICS can make up any ground on the iPhone in the mean time or if we'll even see the iPhone 5 anytime soon. Exciting times for a phone fanatic.

I got my first Android at the right time and can't wait to get Ice Cream Sandwich! ICS definitely looks like a far more worthy firmware update than Gingerbread. If you look at the Google and Nexus logo, the colors match the colors of VOLTRON from the 1980's.

Awesome ad -

Introducing Galaxy Nexus. Simple, beautiful, beyond smart

I think the Tron: Legacy thing is always how I pictured Android to be like even before Honeycomb got released. Like the Nexus live wallpaper where you see lights coming from different directions. Only thing more fitting in that ad is if they had added Daft Punk's "The Game Has Changed" to make it feel more epic.

Their highly anticipated event just ended, and it was no more exciting than Apples. A mediocre phone (Galaxy Nexus) with specs no better than the GS2 besides the 720p screen, and the rest of the event focused on software. (Android 4.0) looks like some must needed polish for android and some new features...nothing too exciting. But I'm sure no older phones will see ICS until mid 2012, if at all. I guess next year will be the big year for smartphones...

LOL, yeah ok

LOL and the fail about Face Unlock

Yeah, real failure  http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/19/ice-cream-sandwich-face-unlock-demo-video/

Oh wow, Apple do small upgrades to their iPhone line almost every year (minus the original iP4 launch, that was amazing) yet their fans are accusing Google and Samsung of doing the same?

People criticising that there isn't anything ground breaking, haven't you been using iOS for the past few years

ICS copying iOS? Again, do you just not keep informed about this stuff

Siri being new? Didn't Apple just buy a company which had been developing Siri for however long and push them to refine it

I still don't understand how people can be so territorial over their choice manufacturer. By all means have a preference but being impartial and quick to spew bile when another seemingly missteps is incredibly childish

Not knocking iOS in anyway, but I can't imagine anyone not finding the UI of iOS tame after seeing ICS. If it's an issue of stability, bare in mind that stock Android has come a long way and is far more stable and usable than what it used to be.

The phone itself is love or hate (though it's ironic people are put off by the lack of high-specs for the Galaxy Nexus when it's one of the arguments to justify some of iPhone's lower specs compared to the market. Also ironic that in the argument that Apple isn't interested in a "spec-race," that members often taut the high PPI of Retina Display).

I think ICS will turn heads of anyone remotely interested in Android.

Could you bullet point the top 5 new features of ICS? I don't know what is changing so would be curious to see what the major/important changes are

LOL you can have your subpar products.

Of course Siri isn't perfect, but she's A LOT better than whatever Android cooked up, as the world obviously saw.

You do realize they didn't demo the full capabilities of the voice controls......BECAUSE IT'S BE AVAILABLE FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS. It's nothing new. I don't really want to get into a debate but since you brought up Siri, here's something Siri can't do....I can tell my Nexus S or my Sensation "navigate to Best Buy" and it will bring up gps with turn by turn directions to best buy. :) Simply put, the galaxy nexus is going to be a great phone, just like the 4s is a great phone. No need to try to downplay the phone just to serve your agenda.

If you don't want people to just dismiss you for being silly and/or ignorant do not compare android voice control and Siri like they in the same ballpark

What they showed off was really cool.

But I would never get a android phone the OS is not customized for each phone so that leaves lots of room for bugs, crashing and freezing. I really like apples integrated software and hardware.

Yeah this is such a huge disadvantage it is essentially impossible for them to overcome. Perhaps when google spins off a new mobile os to go with their Motorola phones it will be competive. Lack of strong integration means they need to have massively better hardware to compete and that still does not solve all the issues.

Apple is the master of hardware and software integration do they start off 35 meters ahead in a 100 meter race.

Could you bullet point the top 5 new features of ICS? I don't know what is changing so would be curious to see what the major/important changes are

  1. Face recognition unlocking - Fast and reliable
  2. Beam - Amazing for sharing everything from webpages and contacts to someone next to you.
  3. Data usage viewer/limiter, ability to save pages for offline browsing, great for those on limited data plans.
  4. Updated core apps, great tab brower, immense gmail integration, People's app replacing contacts, panoramic camera with 0 shutter lag, near field payments, voice typing (no longer need to press button ala Siri), etc etc
  5. Last but not least, you're not locked to Apples wonderfull world, you can change it to fit YOUR needs rather than Apples. Choice is wonderful.

iOS5 closed the gap on Gingerbread. ICS just puts it way in front of it. Looks great aswell with the new high density font.

I'd say the best part of their presentation was their voice transcription being a complete fail.

Goes to show you how advanced Siri really is. +1 for iPhone:D

Uhm, it got one word wrong. Siri gets more than one word wrong in my experience.

Oh fanboys.

And Siri can do 10 times more than what Android voice actions can and is more accurate as proven by the demo. What's your point? And remember Siri is in Beta. Android had a two year head start.

Check the GS2 voice commands vs siri comparison. GS2 does not use the standard Android option - it uses Vlingo.

Not too bad as you can see here.

Check the browsing performance difference too. GS2 looks much smoother to me. Just image it's running GB and not ICS. I can only assume that it will get better now:

I don't know about you, but Ice Cream Sandwich has me excited, almost to the point of returning my iPhone 4S. It really seems to speak worlds about Android's new direction under Matias Duarte. Little features like the Quick Response (swiping up to reveal a list of quick, pre-written texts to send in case you have to decline a call) and saving web pages in the browser are useful and very much wanted.

It's still an android....not worth it to me no matter how good the specs may be.

The GSII has a much better web browsing experience. The screen size, smoothness of scrolling and the ability to display flash makes the iPhone web browsing experience feel so restrictive in comparison.

I've just got the 4S and i'm not sure I want a thinner phone to be honest.

Thats just my personal opinion though of course but there has to be a limit?

Don't get me wrong, I love Doing the my phone and OS is better than yous thing, but some of us are just rediculous.

Ice cream sandwich is so radical compared to iOS 5. It's two totally different worlds. IMO the two shouldn't even be in the same sentence. One is simple but powerful. The other is powerful yet more complex. Two products aiming at two totally different camps of people. Why as consumers are we arguing over something that isn't even debatable.

Oh yea...iPhone 5...6...5 and half, or whatever it will be called is going to be a beast. CANT WAIT!!!

Its also very refreshing to see a competitors ad not have a dig at apple and just focus on their own product. :)

why? I can say the main reason I will never go android is google. I don't want them in every thing i do, and I don't really trust them.

You are letting someone else control YOUR emotions when you express a comment like that. What difference does it matter to YOU, if someone expresses dislike for android? does that mean you can't get one? Not the last time I checked....

I'm happy everyone has a choice, I'd be even happier if the android geeks went and hung out in the android forums rather than staying here touting how wonderful their choice of device is..... I'm not over there (wherever their might be) touting how wonderful my iPhone is.

I'm more than capable of playing geek with my phone, but I don't want too. I rely on it and use it as a PHONE. The only app I had to go buy was Dialvetica because PALM beat iOS in that regard. Yup, my old Treo without data was more functional.

Anyway, competition is good for everyone.....
