Woohoo courier just dropped iMac back to me, and everything works perfectly again. Was really worried about dust under the screen but it all looks good. Very pleased!

Same thing happened to my 27-inch Late 2013 iMac today. I bought it as a refurb from Apple a little over a year ago, so it's out of warranty. I rarely changed the tilt of the display.

Between reports of hinge issues and the fact these things are sealed is the reason I bought AppleCare. Cheap insurance.

Just had the spring in my Late 2012 iMac replaced last week because it snapped in two inside. Luckily I had Applecare. They literally have to gut your iMac to do the repair.

Hey guys.

My one month old 27" iMac (about a month old) at work seems to have developed a loose hinge so that the screen always tilts at its most downward. It still tilts up and down, but will always return to that position by itself.

I've booked an appointment at a local iStore for tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone knew the kind of work that would have to go into fixing it - how long would it be out of action?

Is there just something that needs to be tightened or will there be way more labour involved?

Thanks for any advice!

It happened to me on both iMac 27" which was bought together! Suck..! It's only 1.5 years old!

[doublepost=1454949439][/doublepost]Sounds like another hinge issue.
No adjustment can be made, since the plastic couplers break on the metal hinge inside the machine.
Apple (to my knowledge) replace it with the same inferior part. ($99 item from eBay if out of warranty)

If it is indeed the hinge, the logic board has to be removed to access the hinge.
I have swapped out 4 so far.

I have the same problem. I phoned up Apple and said I wanted a free fix. They said I'd have to bring in the computer first, and then they'd let me know. Hmmph. Well, it is a design flaw. Actually the sagging screen issue happened a long time ago (heard the loud crack sound while watching TV, not even touching my computer...) and I've been hesitant to take it in because I do not want to pay for something that will just happen again.

Add me to the list of annoyed customers.

Mine has been useless sine the day I bought it - I have duct tape on the back - very stylish apple, very stylish!

I wondered why my 2-year-old iMac monitor was tilted down a couple of days ago. I am the only one who uses it (on my home office desk), and it has never been moved. Last night, I tried to move it back up. Nope. Hinge mechanism no longer holds it in place. Right now, I have a sold block wedge in the back above the power cord to hold it in place. Yes, I have AppleCare that is still valid. But it is such a hassle to go without it even for a few days...and drag it through the Mall to the Apple store. Frustrating because they won't let you deliver it to their rear door due to security reasons (isn't that why they have security guards?). Obviously a defective design element. Sigh...

Mine died yesterday. I was away from my desk and heard a loud pop and I looked over to see my monitor's head bowed in shame. I'm several months outside the warranty window, so the best solution I've found so far is ordering an iFixit service wedge to hold things in place.

Any update on the class action lawsuit? I was just sitting here working when I heard my iMac snap in front of me and the screen slowly drooped down. Talk about design flaw...This will be a pain to fix since I use it every day at my job. Thanks to everyone else for their comments on this thread. For now there's rolled up rubber base holding the screen up. This should really impress our clients. Guess I'll have to tell my boss the bad news now...

This happened to me up to 1 year ago and I have had it wedged with some plastic. pretty poor really. I have not approached Apple cause they never admit liability. It is starting to annoy me though. Every time I move the machine I have to wedge the screen again. This is clearly a design fault as proved by the posts in this forum alone. Apple shoul do a recall.

nice job with the pics!

I did end up forgetting to post back... The Apple Store took my machine on Monday and it was ready by the end of the week. They told me when i dropped it off that if the rear housing was the problem, it would be hundreds of dollars, but if it was the mechanism, they would cover it for free. It was indeed the mechanism so i got a nice free out of warranty repair. Thanks Apple!

This is really good to know...

Mine's out of warranty by now--just over three years old--and I heard the snap out of nowhere...wasn't even moving the screen. If they'll actually own up and fix it for free despite being out of warranty as you say, I'll remain a Mac fan. Otherwise, this really is complete nonsense. I can't get over that a flimsy piece of plastic would be used for such expensive equipment.

Thanks for the heads up.

And yea, if they don't fix it, I'm in for the suit.

Let us know how it goes. I am confident you will be pleased.

I had this on my 2013 27 iMac, Apple fixed it for free even though it was out of warranty

My 27" 2013 model, has also got the "Sad iMac disease", or "iMac broken neck" problem, where it unprovoked makes a loud noise, and the screen tilts down. This happened just in time for the warranty to have run out :)

If this is how they are designed, I guess we are going to hear a LOT more about this kind of flaw in the next half year.

My wife's 27" iMac hinge went on Friday night - contacted Apple on chat on Saturday for a genius appointment on Sunday - had to cancel as something came up and the store is an hour away. Apple couldn't commit to a while u wait repair and to be honest didn't really inspire confidence that they actually understood the problem. Will take it in in a couple of weeks instead. Will report back.

I made a device to fix this for people that are out of warranty and want a cheap solution. Currently I only have this for the 21.5 but will have the 27" ready in about a week.

I would really like to find a couple of people to test this for me and give me some honest feedback.

Looks great. Beats my putting a box under the lip of the screen to hold in place. I have the 27", and would love to try your device when you have one for that size.

I've sold quite a few of these for the 2012-2015 27" iMac. www.themachack.com

It's great to see someone being creative to solve a problem. I wonder if you could design something that fitted into the cable slot in the stand? I think it would suit the styling of the iMac a bit belter and give the appearance of being sturdier.

Have a look at the Alurack for an idea how to make the connection.
