why do you guys care about seams so much?
holy ****.

and even if the screws are still there, it's not like they're popping out.
i personally like the screws and seams.

I don't mind them, but the aluminum around the edge of the new iPhone will look just like the edge of the iPad (no screws or seams).

It looks cool, but... Had we been currently using this new bar version for the past 2 years and Apple just now rolled out the smooth rounded iPhone, I'd be all over it. Most people probably would too.

It's actually looking pretty nice.. Something different, a nice refresh :)
As some people have said, it'd be nicer if they removed those screws, but, they probably will :)

Fine by me....This design is great....Except for those tiny screws at the bottom...I bet they won't be there in the "street" version.

I actually like the screws. I think they add to the design.

As for the seems. The bottom ones are fine. Not sure the purpose of the one on top. But I really really like the design.

Awesome!

Apple should sue Gizmodo. This 'I would do anything just to get the lead on a rumour" attitude people have these days is sick. I guess they benefited from it, look how much page hits they got.

lol, you still believe it was an accident... how cute.

Maybe my expectations were a bit high, but I cannot help feel somewhat disappointed with the design (if it is indeed very very close to final) - it just looks "clunky"and more like something that Sony Ericsson or Nokia would ship.

:(

I was seriously expecting something more along the lines of an iPad 3G lookalike .. am I alone in thinking this ?

Having said that, the specs look good !

I love the new design, and I think its very unlikely that the screws will be there on the mass produced model.

Forgetting the fact that the 3G and 3GS have SCREWS on the bottom, how do you think they are suppose to get inside the case again without damaging the product?

Yeah - roll that one around in your head a bit :)

To all it looks "un- Apple"

Actually it reminds me of the 1st Gen iPod Nano

Like many people with an iPhone 3G, my contract is up this summer -- so it was a foregone conclusion that I was getting WHATEVER came out.

But I have to say I actually love the design of this new phone. Looks more expensive, more adult -- though I am surprised at the seams. If they served a function, I can see them making the sacrifice, but otherwise they are usually a stickler for unibody.

This hardware + OS 4 = I'm psyched!

I agree. I think the outer aluminum "ring" will be unibody without the visible screws or break lines. Those are most likely just to make assembly easier for the prototype units.
um, no... then they'd have to add 6-8 clips around the case.
the gizmo leak is the newer prototype

I think the little hole next to the jack plug has more to do with the seems than just opening an imaginary door to the battery. It could be a touch sensor which works with the sides?

That was already listed as a second mic to help reduce background noise like on the Nexus One

I'm sorry, but this is in NO way a "retro" design.

A retro design would be a bag phone-like iPhone. Which I would buy just to have!

I personally love the new industrial-ish design. There was something about the plastic, curved back I didn't like. Which is why I've waited before getting an iPhone.

I like the screws a lot too, actually, makes it feel more industrial and practical, and as a bunch of you said they're on the current models so they'll probaly be there on the new one. For the seams however, not only do the make it look cheaper (as they do on all products), they, more importantly, create weaknesses in the structure of the design. Even my 3G and 3GS with no openings allowed a fair amount of dust to enter and get stuck under the screen to the point where ibhad to replace them at least once - not to mention water can get in, when you drop it the stress is not evenly dispersed as it currently is, they can get caught on something and pulled, it allows for more torque to be put on smaller areas of the device, etc. That's why airplanes and boats and eggs don't have seams haha.

Cool, just announce the thing already, file a lawsuit against Gizmodo and criminal charges against the finder (and seller) of the prototype so we can all move on. Gizmodo has already reaped far too much traffic in this debacle.

I, for one, am digging the new look after some thought and initial doubt. Design-wise it fixes all the things I don't like about my 3GS. I'll be picking one up on launch day. Make it soon please, Apple.

I wouldn't comment if it were otherwise but this time I'm very, very excited about the design and I hope the 4g will look the same or similar.

It's impossible to express my feelings about this. Omitting anything software or hardware-inside related, this time I'm very attracted just to how this thing looks. (Unibody was awesome, but more of a process realization of something that was already there).

It feels like a huge step in design evolution, could be similar to the introduction of the flat keys by extent or perhaps much bigger.
I repeat, it's impossible to express what my feelings are about, but I'm very happy of this design direction and it's what I vaguely was hoping for when it comes to general streams of shape.

peace
