Are the seams a design thing or will they be fixed? I really don't like them... :(

I just want 64 GB, a camera flash and an HD screen - I could care less what it looks like. The latter two are certain - let's hope for 64 GB.

I hope this is not the final design... It looks bulky, heavy, and old --- unless this is reflected in the price (say 100-200).

Apple are know for smooth rounded bodies of art and Windows inspired garbage boxes.

iMac, iPods, iPhones, MacBook Air, Mac Pro, MBP, even the uMBP has rounded smooth top and bottom despite the aluminum edges being sharp.

I still believe it is either a prototype that will undergo optimization on its size and shape (to fit in all the electronics in as small a space as possible) or it is a joke perpetrated by Apple to get headlines.

Screw the screws. lol. I'd rather have more of the speaker exposed so the phone can be louder(hopefully). I swear I'm so tired of the iPhone not being as loud as other phones on the market, especially the speakerphone.

I don't care for the seams either.

I never realised I had received an SMS/MMS/email back when I had an iPhone if it wasn't docked. Too quiet.

That can't be the final design for the volume rocker, looks too retro. And why wouldn't they have used that button design on the ipad? I bet it changes back to the rocker.

I've heard people speculate the volume buttons are seperated like that so you can turn your iphone on its side and use one of the volume buttons as a physical shutter button to take photos.

Sounds like a great idea to me, since I hate having to actually touch the screen itself when you are taking a picture.

Also, the iphone is supposed to have a much upgraded camera lens and an led flash, so having the physical shutter button on top of that might make this a valid replacement for many peoples digital cameras.

Sorry, but is Jonathan Ive dead?

Tbf, it may not be feasible/practical to pull that look off in such a small form factor. Maybe the metal is too thin? It appears as though they are doing their best to achieve something close to that look.

Hi,

I still like the look of this iPhone. It may be my first cell phone, so this design is a good place to start. What is really turning me off the iPhone at the moment is the 3 year contract Rogers Wireless/ Bell/ and others require. Too long of a commitment for just a phone.

The seams and some edges seem very un-Apple like to me.

Fix the 2 clearly visible seams on the side, and make a smoother transition between the metal and class (some sort of rubber lining) and we have the perfect iPhone. I don't think that it's impossible for that to happen before launch (it might even be fixed on the current most up-to-date design).

Here's to hoping...

doubtful

this looks like a generic sonyericsson phone. apple never release - before - an ipod or equivalent with those splices and moulding cracks between the areas of the phone. what happened with unibody? gone?

I think there will be some modifications still. It would not be like Mr. Jobs leave screws visible, the overall look is very unfinished and to me very "Un Apple".

Actually the current iPhone is "un Apple" This new one looks a lot like my iPad and my iMac, while the back isn't "rounded" the edges are beveled, the aluminum is brushed. In fact, the first thing i did when i got my 3Gs last year was sand the bezel with 1800 sandpaper so it didn't shine like the bumper on '69 Cadillac.:D

C'mon, people! If you don't like the design, don't buy one. Simple as that. Stop the "It's too boxy." and the "It looks like a Nokia." because at the end of the day, you all have a choice of which phone to buy. The iPhone has a lot more to offer than just a pretty shell. Come release day, if the iPhone still as the seams, it's cool, because they must serve a purpose.

The hole is a microphone for noise filtering.

That's speculation. While it may be used for that, it's also possible it's a second mic for video chatting. If you were to rest the phone or hold it by the bottom, you'd be blocking the primary mic.

It's ceramic, not plastic.

I don't think anyone has confirmed what material the back is. Just that it's not plastic.

All that being said, this design is growing on me. My favorite design element is the slick sides in comparison to the cheap chrome bezel of the older iphones.

No rounded corners leaves more room for a larger battery..

I remember the story of longer battery life due to the components being more compressed too.

The iPhone 4 will have a aluminum back cover.

Every line of apple products have aluminum (well, almost lol), MBP, iMac, iPad, MBA, Mac Pro, Mac Mini, even the ipod nano and shuffle are aluminum, i really think this is just a simple cover just to hang around with the iphone, testing it. I don't like this design at all it's like people say....it's "unApple"

But don't listen to me, i'm nuts! :D

The interesting thing is not only is the battery 16% larger, but in the iPad Apple got more battery juice from batteries the same size as in previous devices.

So better battery technology and a larger battery and more efficient software power management and more energy-efficient components...could we see a 25%+ increase in battery life in the new iPhone? I hope so.

I would love nothing better than an aluminum back, HOWEVER, i think it s out of the question due to radio interference (note the black plastic area at the top of an iPad 3G for the antenna). maybe one of the engineer types out there could answer that question better as well as "could the "spilt bezel" use one part to function as an outside antenna?

I once thought that Apple fans had an eye for style, but let's be honest...the 3Gs looked like the iphone equivalent of the iMac G3, very plastic and trashy looking. It was nevertheless cool because of its functionality.

The design, whether final or near-final, is incredible. Sleek, well defined lines and my architect friends are drooling themselves because of its beautiful design. The design of the first gen was far superior aesthetically to 3G and 3Gs save for the functionality bit of aluminum not being the best surface to surround a cellphone antennae with. I suspect that the small amount of aluminum on this one won't be so substantial so as to get service. Some people are complaining because the glass doesn't seem to butt perfectly against them aluminum edges...but Thank God for that because if I drop my phone, I want to know it's not going to crack on the first drop.

Most of you don't REALLY care because you put it in a case straightaway. I'm still 1st Gen and have never owned a case because I actually an appreciation for the form factor that goes into these devices.

This is a beautiful machine and I can't wait to but one, because as much as I love my first Gen, I'm ready for this guy.
