You're going to LOVE this upgrade. I tend to upgrade yearly, and I find that some years just have that wow factor and some don't. Don't get me wrong, every model every year is a pretty miraculous piece of tech. But iPhones are typically very iterative devices.

It's just that sometimes the iteration is crazy good and this is one of those times. It's a classic Apple one-two punch going from series 12 to series 13 that reminds me of 4-->4S or 5-->5S. In fact, it makes me wish even more that they'd called it the 12S instead of the 13. (I imagine "12S Pro Max" would have been a bridge too far even for Apple.)

If you had upgraded last year you would have been blown away by the new brand new design, the impossibly fast SoC, the OLED screen, the great battery life, etc. By waiting yet again until this year, you have all the great stuff about last year with legitimately amazing and instantly noticeable upgrades of the screen, cameras, and battery YET AGAIN.

You picked a good year to take that old iPhone out of rotation, my friend. I hope you have as great a time with it as I've already had with mine so far.
Thank you! You’re absolutely right! It’s a more refined version of last year’s model.

Love mine as well. Got the 1tb Sierra Blue. Upgraded from a cracked screen 256gb iPhone X. Boy am I impressed. Especially with the screen quality and just overall build.

I have gotten 256GB for the past couple years. first time getting 512 mainly cause of Pro res.
Ooh I didn't factor that into my decision. I usually have a little more than half storage left (256 model), so I should be fine. But who knows ... maybe next year I'll get 512 as well.

Iphone
Having upgraded from a 16GB iPhone 6 Plus, I am absolutely blown away by the performance and quality of the 13 Pro Max.

I’m very happy with my upgrade. Got mine in graphite 128GB.
that should be a HUUUUUGE upgrade, enjoy

I’m on an iPhone X right now and battery health is horrendous (76%). Debating between replacing battery or going for 13PM.

Has replacing the battery made much difference?
Replacing my battery made my X feel like a new phone. That said, my battery had actually swollen and the display was distorted so Apple replaced the display for free which also helped make it feel new. Apple didn't pay for the battery replacement though as it was out of the warranty period. I probably should have pushed for it--the swollen battery is a totally different issue than normal battery degradation.

Why, exactly?

I have a 7 and an 8 in the family. Both devices will support iOS 15, and both are working perfectly for what we use the devices for. Why might we upgrade when there is no need?

iOS 15 runs and looks the same way right from the smallest to the largest devices. In fact, for iPads, Apple does not even bother to give the the supposed iPadOS a fitting Home Screen that takes advantage of the space (@BreakingKayfabe, that is what a joke really is.) Sure, iPadOS gets multitasking. But it should always have come with a fitting Home Screen, and it still does not. There are speed improvements (that I do not need in the 7 and 8 because of my use) and there are features such as Live Text and some more that I would like to have. Needed? No. Time to upgrade? Not this year.

Next year, now that is another matter altogether. iPhone 7 would likely not get iOS 16, iPhone 8 just might. That is when I begin to feel it is now 'time' to upgrade.
My reasoning is how incredibly slow the iPhone 8 and older have become. My wife’s iPhone X was chugging along and so was another 8 in the family (last year). I have tested all the current phones (minus the 6S and the 7) and anything older than an iPhone XS, really struggles. The iPhone 11 and beyond still offer a lot of headroom. But everyone has different needs!

Well, in comparison to the newer devices, they most certainly will feel like a snail, no doubt! But yes, depends on what you use the device for. I can wager that making a call or sending texts or browsing a few forums is no faster on the iPhone 13 than it is on the 8, but shooting videos, taking photos, playing games - those activities would be noticeably faster.

That’s a hell of an upgrade! I upgraded from a regular iPhone XS and I think it’s nught and day for the camera and battery life.

The 12 series wasn’t really a brand new design though, was it? They just squared the rounded sides

Upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro Max Graphite 512GB from the iPhone 12 Pro Max Graphite 256GB. Definitely more than a "S" year upgrade. Went with the upgraded memory in anticipation of ProRes video.
