you going android = TTFN

You'll be back.

I'm left my iPhone 3gs for a Nexus One and I am coming back for the white iPhone 4 when it finally arrives. Even though I only pay $40 a month total for unlimited data, texting, and 500 minutes on my Nexus One I'd much rather have an iPhone 4 with the ability to TV Mirror, Netflix app, better camera, and Bluetooth keyboard ability :)

I dont understand why everyone wants a bigger screen. I had the droid X and absolutely hated how big it was. It was annoying to hold and to have in my pocket. I love the size of the iphone, perfect fit.

The potential 4inch iPhone, will be approximately the same size as the 3G / 3GS. The only thing that will be bigger, in comparison to the 3G, will be the screen size.

Have you ever used a phone with a 4" screen on a daily basis? Do you realize how large that feels in a pocket? Are you a man-purse guy? Unless you're wearing something like cargos or something with larger pockets, the 4" screen size starts to feel cumbersome in tighter or more form-fitting pants. Notwithstanding, no 4" no buy? Fine ... it's your prerogative. I am very happy with my DX.

Hell, as a female, even with a purse a large phone is annoying if you like to just carry a smallish size purse. I hate those large sack sized purses (Shoot, I used to avoid purses in general). Who wants to carry a large, heavy bag on one shoulder all the time? Plus it means everything in there is rolling around and I don't need my phone banging around in my purse (the small purse keeps it nice and snug in one place). And my purse is stuffed as is, I don't need a larger phone that will be even harder to fit in my purse.

It does amaze me that guys seem to want the larger screen as most seem to carry their phones in their pocket... my dad doesn't even want an iphone cause he thinks it is too big. My roommate's first concern in cellphone is size (he likes the iphone but I doubt he'd like those bigger phones).

Personally, I think the 3.5" screen is a good compromise between usable sized screen and still able to be small enough to be easily portable.

introducing iPhone 5 with non-retina display.

that would be lame..
Apple made up the term to begin with and loosing 30 ppi will not be noticeable and they'll keep calling it retina. Relax.

I wish people would stop comparing a 4" screen to a tablet for cryin' out loud. If you've ever handled a Samsung Captivate, you'll fall in love with the size. It's hardly larger than the iPhone 3GS and it has a rounded back so it sits in your hand and pocket better. Don't over exaggerate. Apple's not stupid enough to make a big honkin' phone like the Droid X.

Read my comment above. 4" in on an iPhone would hardly be larger than the 3GS.

Exactly. People afraid of 4" keep comparing it to a tablet and you'll need a backpack to carry it. What is it with these folks and their inability to accept the fact that it would hardly be larger than the 3GS. Again, check out the Samsung Captivate for size concerns (and I'm sure Apple can improve on that). Please.

I have an android phone and I wish I bought an iPhone instead.. 3.5" screen is perfect, not to small or not to large, it'll fit in my pocket perfectly! 4" is to big, might aswell go for a tablet..

But, I don't think anyone cares about 1 person switching to android.. But believe me, you will regret it, the apps on iOS is much better then the ones on Android.

Good luck in the future.

Why would Apple ever downgrade from a Retina to a non-retina display?

'Retina' is just a marketing term. I believe they said anything above roughly 300ppi qualifies as 'Retina'. A screen with the same resolution as the current can still do that and approach a 4" size, although not quite make it.

I've had 3 android phones, 2 of them had screens 4" or larger. I hated every single one of them. The screen size is irrelevant.....Android just sucks. Every app was buggy, the phone was laggy, and the widgets never worked. Who needs that headache? Heck, Windows Phone 7 is better than Android!

Do yourself a favor, stick with the iPhone.

i really hope to see a bigger screened phone as well. However, i don't want the whole phone itself to increase in size. Maybe Apple can pull another out of the hat this way?

Something like this..

Gawd I have an iphone4 and love it but why all the android hate. I have a colleague who has written some clever apps for android and swears by its open platform.

Ah well.

Personally, I think the 3.5" screen is plenty big enough and I read books, e-mail, browse the web and watch movies on mine with no problem at all.
I don't really care if they put a bigger screen in or not, but what I do care about is that the overall dimensions don't increase at all.

If they can make the screen bigger but keep the overall size of the phone the same or smaller and don't make it impossible to use by putting the screen right up to the edge and push the home button to some impossible to reach part of the phone (or remove it completely and replace it with gestures that you can't do one handed), I'd be fine with it.

One thing I wouldn't be happy about though is if they make the screen bigger at the expense of the overall size or usability of the phone.

I agree with the whole multi touch finger swiping thing, I use my phone one handed and do most quick browsing with just my thumb, so multitouch home would be a no go for me.
Having the screen to the side edges would be fine though.

If they can make the screen a little bigger while making the phone a little smaller, that would be great but not essential.

I do respect that some people, the hyper-sensitive nervous types, are extremely paranoid about the tiny size difference between a 3.5" iPhone & a 4.0" Android phone.

For clarification 25.4mm = 1.0"

The difference between these phones is very small, as follows:

The 4.0" Android is 2mm wider
This same phone is 2.4mm thinner
This same phone is 17g lighter (it's aluminum not plastic)
Finally this phone is 6.7mm taller

How could anyone be so sensitive as to call this too large

Simple really, the Apple loving Android Haters. That's who.

Right now it's iOS itself that's keeping me loyal, not really the hardware specs. I was looking at the engadget reviews for the Atrix and if it wasn't for iOS itself, I would go that route.

I went down the Android path and it is not great.... it's great if you like tweaking and trolling forums, but I was getting Symbian flashbacks.

I'm happy with the size of the iPhone and Nexus One hardware. The EVO-sized phones are a bit ridiculous and look like you're trying to compensate for something.

just signed traded my 3GS for a HTC Inspire mostly because i wanted to go the cheap route this time. overall i like it but there are more than a few things where the iphone is much better. and vice versa.

and i love the 4.3" screen

and i'm planning to use my 3GS as an ipod until it dies

if i really wanted to go android i would have bought the Motorola Atrix today. but i wanted cheap and got a good phone for $80. in 18 months i'll get a better one for the same price of $0.00. no sense buying a $300 phone anymore
