Yes I need that iphone in the smallest price range possible. No way I am gonna shell out 500-600 Euros for my teenage kids (age 14, 12). Need some cheaper smartphone which still rocks. A 200 Euro plastic iphone, no problem, will buy. I still have my iphone 3gs bought from day 1 Europe launch day. Rock solid. Only changed the battery just recently.

Frankly, I don't really give a damn as long as they are functional. Equating that to flowers, nature and women is just daft in my mind.

If you can't make the connection between nature, and the way human designers and architects try to marry beauty and function together, I'm not sure what to say. You seem stuck on the fact that flowers and women are far more beautiful than a MBP, and I'd absolutely agree with you there! But that is to miss the point.

My HP elitebook is made out of plastic, feels as sturdy and well built as my MacBooks.

If you were Australian, you might have said it was 'built like a brick sh*thouse' (red brick or otherwise). ;)

Do you care that your hammer is a thing of beauty or do you just want it to drive nails in ?

Not so much no. My hammer happens to be an old hand-me-down from my dad, and the fact that it looks a bit rough doesn't bother me so long as it hammers in nails effectively. On the other hand, I like that my Bosch wall oven is made of stainless steel and looks pretty schmick. And I happen to think the unibody MacBook Pro looks and feels a darn sight nicer than the old plastic MacBooks, as do a lot of other people it seems. Go figure huh! Crazy humans.

Okay, over and out for me.

I thought they already offered an older model that's $0 with contract?

The problem with that is the contracts are more than people can afford.
I know many people who get cheap used iPhones and simply don’t get data and use them wi-fi only.
I gave my 3GS to my brother in-law and he was ecstatic. He couldn’t afford data but loves having an iphone that connects to wi-fi at work and most places he visits. (including home)

I still don't understand the point of this when you can get an iPhone 4 for free or a 4S for $100. Plus you get fancy glass and aluminum enclosures with those two.

See my above post.

For me, the cost of the hardware has always been less of an issue than the recurring cost of the associated voice/data plan.

That's because you are paying for the hardware with your voice/data plan.

This is evident with the fact that straighttalk for example gives you unlimited all for $45, a similar plan on AT&T will set you back $100.

If you can't make the connection between nature, and the way human designers and architects try to marry beauty and function together, I'm not sure what to say.

We're talking about 2k$ pieces of electronics, not timeless architecture that reflects the very nature of human culture and civilization through the ages here.

A 2k$ piece of electronic to me is just that, a device with a function. Design doesn't even come close to being a criteria of purchase.

...

If Apple wanted to do this they would have done it, no engineering is required to release an iphone 4 with a plastic back and a non-retina display. Switch out those two parts and you have a pretty low cost of production phone

Check it out, now you can run android and ios on your iPhone! The new low cost iPhone looks like an android device and now it can be one too:rolleyes:!!!

If Apple resorts to this, then its truly a sign that Apples innovation and ingenuity are finished. Theres no way Apple can obtain a good profit margin on these Low end iPhones . Besides the country where Apple is going to sell these are more on the poorer side and the people are not purchasing Macs etc.

So wrong. There is a 1% in China just like the US. Except in China the 1% means 12 million people. And they are stupefyingly wealthy there, perhaps even more so than the 1% in the US are in the US. So there are plenty of Macs being sold in China and there will be plenty of phones and iPads sold there now and in the future.

I'm not saying that I believe there will be cheap iPhones. But Apple could certainly make one and still make a good profit.

the cheap-o version will be an instant hit!

Exactly why this rumour os flawed. Entry level iPhones are previous gen, 8GB models, and are usually $0 on a 3 year term.

Do you people even bother to read ? This rumor is about a phone that is low cost on NO TERM AT ALL. Pre-paid or markets without contracts at all.

You'd think some posters would stop posting this crap after it's been explained 50 times in the thread already.

I can see the market. Alot of people I know would love to own a iPhone but can't due to cost.

I'm not sure what country you're in, but in the US an iPhone 4 can be gotten for free with a contract with the provider. Even if you get a brand new top of the line iPhone 5, the cost of the phone is a drop in the bucket compared with the money you'll be spending on a plan. I can't see a low cost iPhone causing new people to get an iPhone in the US that couldn't afford them before. I see it more for the developing world.

you are tied to an expensive contract in which iphone users are subsidised by android users (that pay the same for a much cheaper phone). In the rest of the world they dont, and an iphone contract is nearly double that of an android contract.

Why do you think android is doing so much better outside the states? Apple cannot compete on price outside the states.

A phone that could be sold by prepaid carriers for $249 would probably be pretty popular around the world.

Agree. I honestly don't see what the big deal is with people panicing here.

I personally think if this is to happen it will be similar to the iPad mini, a mid-tier phone which perhaps could cost $349 - $399.

I mean the Nexus 4 is still sold out for the next 8 weeks, and I'm sure the killer price is a big piece of it.

If all Apple wants to do is enter into emerging Markets then they had better hurry up and release a low cost phone. It's not like everyone else is sitting on their laurels.

Not disagreeing, but the fact of the matter is the cell phone market is always a moving target. Even customers missed today will be back in 2-3 years for something new. So customers missed today will be back in a couple years for Apple or whoever.

I guess we may see someday. :)
