No I don’t remember the original iBook. I did a quick Google… but I’m guessing it had colorful options which were NOT limited to a budget version?
It was very colorful, and funky looking… and iconic…

This was the lime green for example (thank you GIS):

That’s the point I’m trying to make… If you are in a Starbucks and you see a plain looking MacBook (silver or gray) then you know it’s more expensive. If you see a super colorful one then you know it has to be the budget option.
I think you are a bit out of touch with most people. People like fun things. Colors are fun. No one cares if it’s the “budget” option, people like color.

Also, the most expensive laptops Apple sells are the 16 inch macbook pros like my work laptop. My work laptop is *covered* in stickers. I go to a fair amount of conferences, including re:invent every year. By far the most popular swag are stickers. Go into any office and you’ll find plenty of devs with laptops festooned with stickers.

People like fun things
I’m not trying to make some judgment here… but it will immediately be something people can understand on first glance.
No, it really wont. Also, it’s not like even a cheap mac is going to be cheap. $700 or so is a lot of money to most folks.

But also, dude, nobody cares how much you spent on your laptop.

Why would you buy this while waiting for a MBP redesign when your current computer is likely far and away more powerful? If you need an M5 MBP, what would this gimped consumer laptop solve for you?

Do you just not have a laptop and need one right now?

I don't have a laptop and need one as ealier as possible. Basically, my work is hindered because this TC keeps delaying the release of the M5 Pro MacBook Pro 16".

Probably not going to shake out quite like this, but a Product Red 12" ultralight MacBook would be amazing. If they hit the $600 price point, it would be very tempting for me as a tiny portable Ableton machine.

I desperately need such a device running macOS for work on the road. Hopefully, there will be at least one color option that does not make it look like a kindergarten toy laptop.

Offhand, I'd say that color may be the least of your worries. I'd be more worried as to the apps it will be able to run. If users are hamstrung into using whatever is left free of iWorks and also Safari, with possible crossover of iPhone apps, that may prove problematic for professionals.

I hope Apple doesn’t try what Microsoft did with their “R” edition of Windows and ship this will a version of iOS. Keep it macOS and it will be amazing. And 16GB RAM please. 8GB is useless in 2026.
I still lug my MacBook Pro M4 because I do need a laptop with some of my work. However, I probably don't need much in the way of heavy processing power. And the truth is it's a heavy thing to carry.

Still hoping the rumors about aluminum construction are wrong and this thing brings back "unapologetically plastic"
I am pretty sure will be stamped aluminum like the new iPhone Pro models. At scale probably just as cheap to make as plastic but better at dissipating heat and especially for the environment.

"keeps delaying"

huh? The last MBP release was only just over a year ago (to be exact 15 months). How much sooner did you expect the M5? Sure, sometimes Apple does shorter timelines, but right now we're sitting just outside the average release time window (390 days according the buyers guide here, about 12.5 months), it's hardly long overdue

Also, if it's a tool you need you buy now. That's how work works. If you're making money from it, if not having a laptop is hindering you, you buy the M4 right now. If you can wait for the M5 you don't actually need it. Not to mention plenty of us are working on much older machines, my M1 Pro MBP works just fine, and I'm a software engineer, what do you *need* from the M5 that the M4 doesnt offer?

If I am going to buy, it needs to have more than 8GB of RAM or at least offer the upgrade.
I would definitely prefer more RAM, but my current Macbook Air has 8 GB & it's fine for what I do. I'm assuming that if this macbook comes out & it's only avaialble in 8GB, it will get upgraded to 16 GB over time, and when it does, I'll buy another one.

I'm a little surprised they don't mention orange...given how popular the color is on the iPhone Pro. I'm not a fan myself, but listening to people go crazy over it, I think Apple made the right move in making it in that color...I just wish there was a black/dark gray option for boring people like me.

As for the new budget MacBook, having been through the original iMac era, I can see how the colors could really get out of hand (remember Dalmation iMacs?) and could easily become an inventory nightmare -- which, I believe, is how Tim Cook first made an impact on the company.

But this will generate attention and interest...and probably fly off the shelves.

...and, of course, MacRumors readers will decry the lack of true innovation or the fact that the budget MacBook won't include Thunderbolt 6, 3D touchscreens, or drive 6 external monitors.😜

Dalmatian* and they were actually really cool in person! Steve Jobs had said that had to invent a whole new printing process on plastic to be able to paint these from the inside.

Does anyone know if this will be able to work with Vision Pro and the "Mac Virtual Display"

I personally have a 2021 MBP-16" and my employer gave me an M4 MBA, I really love the Virtual display when working with lots of stuff. A smaller screen on these machines, would nudge me to put on my AVP if it works well!

If those are the colors I don’t see what’s bold about them. I guess the pink one is ok but seems like it would become dated easily. The yellowish/greenish/goldish one is just not a good color and the blue is too pale. Bring back the colors Apple used on iPods.
There is no arguing about taste

Some third party opportunities must present itself with this announcement. Imagine Chinese companies offering to upgrade the inadequate SSD inside for cheap like they do for MacBook Pros.

I wonder how many displays it can support. Tbh would love to sell my M4 Max binned 14" that is constantly out of RAM and throttles, and maybe get this as the on the go machine that I can watch movies at hotels with, and a nice M5 Max or something Mac Studio to replace the power side of my m4 max. M4 Max is docked in clamshell 90% of the time. The 10% its not docked I am just browsing reddit and watching YouTube.
