How so? There's a reason Apple became such a significant customer of Samsung in the first place. They are a very competent manufacturer. The troubles began when Samsung started competing with Apple on finished products. I don't blame Apple for wanting to reduce their dependence on a competitor.
I don´t blame them either, but it´s strange that suddenly Apple wants Samsung to help, when they could´ve played with that idea beforehand to iron out all the possible scenarios that could happen. They should know that Sharp/LG have had difficulties (and the reasons why) manufacturing the smaller screens for the mini. Yield issues or manufacturing capacities always come into play when Apple wants 15 million devices to be sold.

It all just sounds like a very "thin" emergency plan. That´s why I think it´s funny that Samsung has to come to the rescue again. It seems like Apple always wants to work with Samsung again after they have problems with their other suppliers.

It´s possible that Apple simply wants to price dump all they can to earn even bigger margins. Else, they would have worked with Samsung on this way sooner.

While I was more in the Mini camp for many reasons, I may have spoke too soon about naysaying the iPad Air. In light of fixing my iMac, I'd rather risk an Air than IR on the mini. I would not want to go through the iPad 3 > 4 again myself.

Another trip to the Apple Store next week to determine if I jump or just wait for the next gen.

With the exception of the iPhone, it is so disheartening there are display issues across the board.

I agree. Although I enjoy using Apple products and am passionate about them, I cannot understand all the display issues. Of course there must be a rationale explanation, but I would like to see them sorted out.

Oh well, I am still set on ordering my retina iPad very shortly. But excited, may I add!

It seems strange that this is getting "leaked"/discussed in the press now that the Air is available.

Part of me thinks that Apple is playing a bit of demand gaming. Apple would have gotten hammered in the press if they didn't disclose a mini before Christmas, so they were kind of backed into a corner and needed to introduce it. They need to make the best of the situation.

If, when placed side by side, most prefer the mini (I'm sure they've done the research) then it would behoove Apple to:

- release the Air first (they did)
- scare the public with scarcity/quality "rumors" (they are)
- hold back quantities on release date (???)

The result: prevented canibalization of more expensive iPad, and healthier margins for Apple. That's one reason why I think there's also been swaying of public opinion to sell more cellular (higher margin) iPads. It's worked on me, as I now want a t-mobile iPad!

No matter what, they're setting the stage for a black market of high res minis prior to Christmas.

It'll be fun to watch.

I wouldn't order the iPad mini retina at launch. I would wait a few months before buying. These screen issues seem serious.;)

What type of screen in in the nexus 7 (2013)? IPS? Its very bright thin and great angles with aprox the same ppi. Whats better about igzo? Honest question...Not starting an android vs ios battle.

Sharp invented IGZO displays!

If the burn-in displays do not show up in viewing through the human eye; it should be good to go! I do not like the short cut that LG and Samsung are making to produce the Mini Retina displays.

I just hope I get a Sharp display!

From my research; the Sharp displays are undetectable by the human eye. It only if you use a microscope that you are able to see the blemish. I talking 50X magnification.

If you are not a paid Samsung troll (and they just got busted in Tiiawan and fined for trolling covertly) what did not not mention all PC sales are down not just iman and why arribute imac sales to design?

LOL, go back to your cult, fanboy. iMac sales were down that one Christmas season because Apple couldn't produce enough to sell due to poor planning, same as with the current retina iPad Mini debacle.

They were able to deliver because they were willing to accept any screens that were available. This is a fine solution for the Android world, where they don't care a bit about screen dimensions, because they've long since embraced fragmentation, which is why nearly all Android tablet apps are stretched-out phone apps.

Apple wanted to make a smaller iPad with 100% app compatibility. This could not have been done with any of the screens you mentioned. They had to wait.

The display manufacturers don't choose a a few display sizes at random and hope some tablet maker buys them. They work out the sizes in advance with tablet makers.

For a company like Apple, with huge guaranteed sales, suppliers would gladly produce high resolution displays at any size specified. We know that they have the ability to do so because they have already produced such displays at sizes similar to that used in the iPad Mini.

It's pretty clear that Apple shot themselves in the foot again because of their thin fetish. They wanted thinner with good battery life, and that limited their high res display options. In my view they should have released a thicker retina iPad Mini a year ago and then introduced a thinner IGZO version when IGZO technology was ready.

heh heh, you have this notion that Samsung is "helping" Apple.. hello, it is a big business and there are a lot of money change hand for their "help". Apple problem is that Samsung as supplier is getting too large and they don't necessary give Apple the first crack at their best display technology. Apple response is to use other suppliers and create competitors for Samsung. Good of bad, because Apple's order, Sharp will have money to continue to develop their IGZO technology. LG will be able to reinvest in their display technology as well. Samsung is not going to simply do Apple a favor, they will charge the max price they can.. But for Apple, the pay off is more suppliers for 2014 and beyond and may be one of them will give Apple the best display technology before putting the new tech into it's own product first.

Apple can only pull this **** with ipad mini's because of their monopoly in the tabloid market. iOS was originally designed for the ipad, not the iphone, and I truly believe it's the optimal experience on a tablet. To this day there's no real competitor or acceptable alternative to iOS for tablet, whereas if people were told they'd have to wait till maybe next year for an iphone or Mac there are enough market alternatives that they very well might say "F__k this, I'll buy an Android phone." I prefer iOS but if my phone was bricked and I was told "you're going to have to wait a month for the new iphone" I'd get an android phone. But with the tablet Apple knows it's still only the major player in town, which explains the price gouging and the "supply constraints." If the kindle fire starts selling like hotcakes just watch those "supply constraints" clear up overnight.

I was interested in the retina mini before this post, now I want nothing to do with it. I'm not going through more retina display image retention bs.

I had a feeling a display related issue was delaying it. I hope they fix it soon.

One wish they released iPad mini with A7 with out retina display - if the display issues are true.

If they do not have enough stock for holiday sales - it is a miss for apple.

Relax guys. It is going to be awesome device. Best tablet.

we still have to wait for battery life and performance ( theory is it is gonna be exact as iPad Air - let us still wait for the cat to be out of the cage).

I'm sure these are complex negotiations. We don't know what Samsung Display offered, for starters. Perhaps they priced themselves out to the extent that Apple figured it was worth the risk of giving Sharp and LG full production capacity. Perhaps Sharp was ahead of Samsung (or at least appeared to be) in terms of IGZO or other manufacturing capabilities. Perhaps Samsung promised only a smaller number than Apple was looking for.

The bottom line is that it is in Apple's interest to have multiple options, but not to let every supplier think it has an "automatic" place at the table. Samsung is the best display maker in the business. There really isn't any disputing that. But that doesn't mean that Apple should be obligated to always contract with them.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Apparently Apple would rather lose some sales than ship devices with defective displays. FWIW I am perfectly fine with the display on my iPad Air.

So long story short, I'm waiting until the second or third batch of iPad minis to populate stores before I upgrade from my original mini....or may even wait until the next one with Touch ID and other features.

I returned my Nexus 7 and have every intention of being there as soon as the doors open for the iPad Mini Retina release.

I decided to get iPad mini today. I have 35 days to use it. Hopefully, I will be able to get an iPad mini retina display by then.

This is a real problem and worrisome, and I hope people really do wait for the iPad mini 3 and skip this, so I can buy this without worrying about Apple running out of stock. ;)

iPad Air Poor Tints?

IGZOgate. Between the poor tints on the iPad Air and the not-released-but-already-bad screens on the mini retina, IGZO sounds like it just isn't mature enough for market yet, unfortunately.
Poor tints? What poor tints? I've got one of those new iPad Airs and I also own iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3 and two iPad 4s. The Air looks just as great as all those old ones. What bogus rumor smack are you writing about? You got facts to back that “poor tints” smear? No poor tints on mine. Please clarify.

Oh and by the way, I'll be among the first to own a retina mini the day it ships. This rumor stinks to high heaven. I can believe there's an IGZO low yield problem. But I don't believe it won't ship by the end of this month. Just not in the quantities Apple was planning for. So allocation will be the rule till next Spring at least.

Reading through all the armchair critics' comments make me LOL. I bet all of you know more about supplies than Apple and especially Tim Cook who is arguably the best supply manager in the industry.

Like with processors, it's always so much easier said than done. Some companies can produce quality, some quantity, but very rarely both for a company like Apple. Comments like "just switch to XYZ and teach ABC a lesson" are fun to say, but don't have much to do with reality.

I'm unclear why Apple can't simply use the current retina display technology that they developed for the iPad Air. The Mini screen is slightly smaller, so more of the displays could be produced (almost two for every one of the Air). The technology is stable and the resolution seems fine, a big gain over the current iPad Mini. Introduce the more advanced screen technologies when their suppliers work out the problems. It seems like it would be more important to just get the product on the shelves. Most consumers probably wouldn't notice the difference between the Air screen and the slightly higher res IGZO display of the Mini anyway.
