The burn in issue with the rMBP is worth mentioning again. I don't live near an apple store, I'm out of warranty, and apple has left me with very limited options I. Fixing it. Hell, they haven't even acknowledged that it's a widespread problem!

If Steve Jobs were still CEO, there the hallways of Apple HQ would flow with the blood of bozos.

You speak as if Steve Jobs was still alive. I highly doubt you know what Steve Jobs would have done. Wasn't it the case there were reported product issues, with other Apple products, when Steve Jobs was alive and CEO.

I hope a lot more people have this same reaction... that will make it easier to get a mini retina when its launched. :D

Haha, I may change my mind! lol But seriously, my main reason is that the display may not be as good as the Air, particularly if there are manufacturing issues...

Or another idea may be to get both and compare? Hmmmm

Or it might do the exact opposite and push people away from the iPad or cause them to just delay purchase until the rMini 2.

You are assuming consumers are iPad or bust, but sales date suggests otherwise. It's quite likely the people in the market for a 7" tablet prefer the mini but if not available will look at Android alternatives either because of price or size/weight.

I can say from personal experience that my Air is not a substitute for the mini because of the size. 7" and 9"/10" may not seem like a huge gap on paper, but in the hand it is.

I definitely agree with you as far as the significance of the size difference. But as far as "iPad or bust", that's pretty much the mentality of tablet buyers. Especially if buying as a gift. Buying an android tablet for someone who wants a tablet is sort of like buying Mega Bloks for a kid who likes Lego. A nice gift, but not quite what you wanted. And it's obvious the buyer cheaped out, and no one wants to be the cheapskate at holiday gift time.

Apple wasn't a vaporware company when Jobs was alive.

Buyers beware!

Gee, what happened to companies having some ethics?

People want it. They can have it. But they shouldn't force the "buyer beware" routine on the rest of us.

If the burn-in is invisible to users, why is it a problem?

Entropy, thermodynamics, and physics...

Samsung to the rescue... Apple's best worst friend. Or worst best friend?

Those two companies chose to behave that way.

IGZOgate. Between the poor tints on the iPad Air and the not-released-but-already-bad screens on the mini retina, IGZO sounds like it just isn't mature enough for market yet, unfortunately.

What's up with the "gate" suffix? In 1972, Watergate was a hotel in which a sitting president broke the law. Somehow "gate" became a suffix for unrelated political scandals and/or catastrophes, and somehow after that the suffix became equally erroneously applied to corporate misdeeds. Yay.

thicker, heavier, burn-in issues and more expensive. it even sounds cool.

So it's a poor design. iFixit will chime in shortly, I hope, as that entity is good at pointing out poor designs, warped screws, leaking goo under fans, excessive thermal paste that counters what thermal paste is supposed to do, etc...

Take a look back at iPad 3 screen issues and even the new iPad Air screen issues (because the Air uses the new technology).....even Apple is letting some issues through. I'm guessing that a screen has to be REALLY bad to be rejected, otherwise it makes it.

Don't for a minute think Apple is all high and mighty and only releases the best of the best....they are like any other company and are trying to pump out as many "acceptable" devices as possible.

when it costs $8 more to make a 64GB version instead of 32GB and sells it for $100 more, on top of the "you're holding it wrong" slap in the face and the countless people on Apple's own website complaining about iMacs and Macbooks prematurely failing due to poor cooling and poor design, I think there is a very valid point being made...

Apple has high standards, and that's okay with me.

You believe Apple has high standards. That's okay for you, but in the real world a lot of people are going to disagree with you. Not wrongly so.

Apple wasn't a vaporware company when Jobs was alive.

The issue is you posting as if you know what Steve Jobs would have done. He made mistakes, admitted some of them and others try to placate. Don't get me wrong, I had a lot of respect for the man and what he accomplished with Apple.

This is a very different screen than the 7" screens that were available. It is a 7.9 inch QXGA resolution screen (and it needs to be to maintain iPad compatibility), and no one was making those until very recently. You don't just take a pair of scissors to a big roll of LCD screen and cut out the size you want.

The point is that other companies are able to deliver on 300+ PPI displays in the same size range. It's part of the reason Apple's share of the tablet market is shrinking. Hold a low resolution iPad Mini next to a 7-9" high res tablet from another company, and the difference in display quality is striking.

This is the second major supply issue under Cook, the first being the latest iMac design. Both times, the lack of supplies killed Apple's holiday sales and affected profits. As a consumer, I'm dissapointed I'll have to wait longer, but if I were a stockholder I'd be pissed.

Will I keep waiting? Probably. The other 8" tablets I've looked at are hobbled by non-standard Android implementations, and the Nexus 7 is just a tad small for my needs. But I'm a hardcore Apple user. Imagine all the sales Apple will lose to people who don't already own a house full of Macs and iDevices.

Are you stating that only a company that produces a product that has zero issues can only be considered as having high standards? Because when I look at the Apple products I have bought, and I have bought quite a few, it appears to me that the way they are built is that Apple does have high standards. Is Apple perfect, no but that does not mean they don't have high standards to which they produce products.

I'd rather Apple delay the release of this thing vs pushing it out there and seeing who gets a bad copy.

Might also have to wait for round 2 of this thing next year. Or purchase Apple Care as well.

People complaining because Apple might not be able to meet demand is kinda funny and sad at the same time. Especially those who already have an ipad.

I'm actually surprised it's not worse, because of all the people who just cant wait and need it on day 1...

Relax, its still a great product 1 or 2 months later.

This stings a bit because the iPad Mini was a flawed product from day one due to it's low res display tech like something out of 2005.

You're right, though, the Mini is going to rock once production issues are solved. Many of us will just wait for the next revision just to be sure.

I find it funny Apple is concerned about non existent short term retention issue of the screen. Claiming that it's not up to their standards. When iOS 7 is still insanely buggy. Where was their "standards" during the release of iOS 7 or even after their 3rd patch for it?

Apple continues to demonstrate that it is perfectly willing to sell seriously visually defective displays, but you think they'd hobble the launch of this product because of a "back of the cupboard" type non-visible problem?
What we need is for the experts from MacRumors to be at the end of the assembly line for QC.

So they're delaying production due to "invisible" IR on a $400 tablet, but didn't bother having LG fix the problem before releasing a $3000 laptop?

Apple wasn't a vaporware company when Jobs was alive.
This Mini issue isn't what vaporware means.

Image Retention is a huge issue for displays. Now, I haven't seen a good or bad iPad Mini Retina screen to know exactly what we are talking about here, but IR certainly has kept me away from most LCD TVs over the years (and some plasmas before that). Had an excellent Panasonic LCD once, and an ok Samsung now. I would rather they get it right.

This is embarrassing for Apple, especially the part about going to Samsung, so I highly doubt that this was planned or intentional in any way. If they wanted to force people to buy the Air, they could have just released the Air, with no update to the mini. People would whine and then go buy an Air.

Absolutely.

To all those waiting for the retina mini...apologies in advance.

Some major suckage likely coming your way.

While the burn-in issue is reportedly invisible to users, the panels do not meet Apple's specifications

PLEASE.
An invisible defect is unacceptable to Apple. Yet, the hundreds or thousands of reports of late-2013 rMBP 15" yellow blotchy screens is acceptable to Apple.

Really??

Dump Samsung Fast!

They really need to dump Samsung fast! They are nothing but perasites leaching off their desings and tech.

Fair enough, I probably shouldn't have done that.

Issue after issue.

if Tim Cook cannot run Apple even properly without issues, notwithstanding the chronic lack of innovation, then perhaps the Board of Directors need to get its head out of the sand and fire Tim Cook and get someone in who is actually capable of running things.
