Many streaming applications check your bandwidth and deliver a stream based on the speeds it finds. Meaning the higher the bandwidth the higher quality stream you receive.

I believe the rationale people are using is because you have faster data your habits may change thus using more data.
If you have Sprint's 3G you may perform one task then wait, knowing it will not be done for quite some time, leaving your phone idle which in effect uses less data as your attention is diverted elsewhere.

I'm on ATT Network and since getting the iPhone 5 on Friday, I have used about 2.1GB. I think I burn all of that when I was out and streaming a football game.

I don't understand why LTE uses more data. If you download an album that's say, 200mb, why does it take more data to get it faster over LTE than 3G? Can someone exain it to me?

That's my thoughts exactly. If you use your device no differently you should use no more data...only get things done faster.

I am not using my phone any differently than BEFORE when I was on the 4S and I am using the SAME amount of data. I bet it is the same for most.

I still think something else was going on if you used that much data.

Except in many instances it is beyond your control that the particular app or service detects the faster speed and sends a higher quality (larger) file.

This makes sense Youtube for instance detects bandwidth and delivers varying levels of quality HD versions taking up the most bandwidth.

Although I dont know if Netflix also serves up their shows and movies this way. If it does perhaps that might explain it.

I know Netflix does for at home use, but I can't confirm with the mobile app.

That would make perfect sense and how I understand it, as well.

There are many instances of people, whom are having the same experience, as yourself. Fortunately, I have not used any more data on LTE, as I continue my normal pre LTE routine.

I can understand and appreciate how this issue would be quite frustration and annoying.

Interesting . . . I will keep this in mind when off of wi-fi.

I'm on the OP's side here.. He's just trying to explain in simple terms what happened and everyone is jumping all over him like he's done something wrong..

Not sure what's causing the issue op, but, LTE has been a nightmare on my 5.. So much so, I've just disabled one..

1 - Sucking data like crazy.. The way I use my phone hasn't changed, but, the phone would seemingly decided to download hundreds of MB worth of stuff which never happened with any other iPhone i've had with 3G.. This isn't a speed thing, this is the amount of stuff being downloaded.

2 - LTE was draining my battery like crazy.. LTE disabled, my iPhone acts like any other iPhone i've had. Battery is great.

My understanding is that the OP was using Netflix and watching movies while driving to work.

First of all, this is extremely dangerous and secondly, if the OP can't realize he's going to have higher data usage from streaming Netflix as opposed to listening to 30 minute podcast, then nobody here can be of service.

I just love it, absolutely love it when people complain about data usage on tiered plans.

@ OP - maybe you should have signed a contract when unlimited data was an option.

Either pay up or shut up. :D
