I HAVE NEVER MENTIONED RUNNING NETFLIX NOR HAVE I EVER USED NETFLIX!!!! Holy crap, get over netflix!!!!!!!!!!

No need to yell. Also, did you allow your podcast stream to download another podcast? Example other things you were subscribed to but didn't know you downloaded.

Like I said, it is not LTE, it is your own usage that causes 700MB.

Um, I think you need to breathe a moment and please look and see that there is some good advice here. Were you downloading the podcast while you were listening or did you have it downloaded before you started off? Others are warning you that apps that do video streaming will eat up even more data. Some podcasts are video podcasts as well, if you were downloading as you listened, even if you weren't watching the video, you would still be downloading the video and audio.

Tips for you would be to make sure you download the podcasts you want to listen to before leaving your wifi area. Also watch for the Verizon fix for the erroneous amounts of data they are reporting as being used.

Let me start over once again, since everyone here is so quick to assume I am retarded.

I was driving to work and listening to a podcast...the EXACT same thing I have ALWAYS done with EVERY iphone I have ever owned!!!!

I checked my data before I left. I was at 25MB.....30 mins into my drive I was at 706MB. I switched off LTE and continued to stream the exact same podcast I was listening to....no it was not video, since I have to elaborate everything here. and used very very little to no data after I switched off LTE.

How hard is this to grasp??? I know peoples attention span is near nothing these days, but do you read more than the title of threads before railing on posters????

OK, so magically the exact same usage on 3G uses 25MB in 3 days. Or 700MB in 30 mins. NM, its all me.

Please stop yelling and go check your carrier settings. Some apps are set to stream at differently quality levels based on how fast the connection is. Again, what may well have happened is that you downloaded the podcast while on LTE. Now that it's downloaded, no matter what you are connected to it won't download any more data since it's already installed.

Put it back on LTE, don't do anything else and if the data meter goes up, call up Verizon right away to see if anything needs to be updated.

Again, merely being connected to a network won't use up any data.

I posted this as a warning to Verizon users that don't want massive data overages.

If you don't believe me, then have fun.

If you have experienced this and know a way to fix it...please contribute.

You don't get it, obviously. I don't know how much more clear I can possibly be.

LTE on....one low res podcast playing and nothing else = 706MB in 25 mins.

LTE off...same podcast playing = 30 mins later 706MB still used.

As a matter of fact, since I disabled LTE I am still at 706MB received, and that was 2.5 hours ago.

It can't be any simpler!!!!

I just have to assume you work for Verizon because you sound exactly like their customer "support" people.

Has anyone else experienced this, or is everyone going to just defend their stance that LTE uses more data to do nothing simply because it is faster at doing nothing.

Ok let try this. You said LTE is useless, because according to you it uses too much data. I said how is it useless that it uses too much data, it doesn't make it pointless. Then i said dont watch netflix on it or you will be in for a shocker meaning you're going to burn through a ton of data on LTE. I dont care about how much data your phone actually used. I was responding to the fact that you said it pointless. Because its eating through your data too fast. If you stream anything on LTE wether it be podcast, netflix its going to use more data than 3g. Now do you get it? You're making this much more difficult. LTE uses more data than 3g. Thats it, even if you're phone didn't use that much data at the end of the day LTE will always use more data than 3g. If you have a tiered data plan you're going to have to watch it more, if you're on unlimited then stream to your heart content since VZW doesn't throttle.

I'm sure I did download the podcast while on LTE and thats why data stopped rising...but a low res podcast is NOT 700MB.

Actually I can confirm that the exact podcast I listened to was 67MB.

How does that equal 700MB of use?

Actually VZW does throttle like crazy. My 3G connection was HORRIBLE when I was on unlimited. Now its at least useable.

I'm sorry you think yelling at all of us will make things magically better, but have you heard it mentioned multiple times now that Verizon admits that they are over reporting how much data is being used? Nobody here is saying this didn't happen, instead people have asked you some very real trouble shooting questions.

How come you didn't say that in the 1st post?

Yeah they cant throttle your LTE though 3g I cant speak about LTE you wont have to worry.

I will simply state, I already did the carrier update, I've already reset network settings and all my settings are set to use as little data as possible.

3G uses 25MB in 3 days, LTE uses 700MB in 30 mins to do the exact same thing. I am done explaining. This was to help others in a similar situation.

I hope all the geniuses here don't ever have this issue, because its pretty obvious that everyone here is SO damn smart they aren't willing to back down on what they think is right.

I'm done.

LTE isn't a problem.. when I had AT&T with HSPA/HSPA+ speeds.. I used about 1.5GB a month. I now have Verizon LTE and I still have the same usage. It depends on how you use your phone.

If you were to watch a YouTube video on 3G that was 5.5MB then re-watched it on LTE, it would still be 5.5MB... it would just load faster.

Wow your name is misleading there is nothing gentle about your fury. People on here trying to provide their thoughts on helping you and you jump all over them calling them morons or working for Verizon. Take it easy man.

Since you wont accept that something else is eating up the data then obviously Verizon is screwing you or iPhone 5 is draining the data, either way return it and get another phone , Samsung or the 4S.
Or as someone suggested go Sprint, then you can eat up GB's hourly and not have to worry about getting overages.

I was obviously not watching netflix while driving.

Except Sprint's network is too slow to "Eat up GB's hourly":rolleyes:

I use Verizon because the service is good and the LTE is super fast...but honestly, if sprint LTE is faster than 3G I might consider it.

Nearly as fast but significantly less problems with data traffic usage is they key here. :)

If you're listening to a 30 minute podcast, where's the difference whether it takes 10 seconds or 20 seconds to download completely? It starts immediately in either case, anyways. And with Sprint you can listen to as much podcasts as you want without being charged for every GB of data you're using.

That would make sense wouldn't it.

Thats what I always though, and that is why I was so excited that I was going to finally get LTE....same usage but less time to do it! YAY!

Sadly, my exact same usage (5GB/month) is now almost 4GB in about a week. I have used it no differently.

I was obviously not watching netflix while driving.

One time I had a random data spike few months back I found out what it was, and it was my fault. I hadn't updated my apps in awhileeee, I had over 30 apps needing updating. I was at home on WiFi. I clicked "update all" and then about 10 minutes later, I had to leave for some reason, I forgot my apps were updating and grabbed my phone, so obviously it resumed updating over (3G at the time).

I have the iPhone 5 on AT&T's LTE network, and it isn't downloading data for no reason. I've downloaded 1.7GB in 3 weeks, which is about double my normal usage pattern, but that's because I streamed a video, which I never did on AT&T's LTE network.

If you've applied the carrier setting, are absolutely sure that nothing is running in the background, and can tell from Verizon's website that you are registering downloads, I'd call Apple and/or Verizon right away, as something is wrong. The problem isn't LTE. Again, just because you aren't willing to back down on your diagnosis that "LTE is the problem" doesn't make it so.

Again, merely being connected to an LTE network isn't going to cause you to download data.

That would explain your situation.

I was on the road listening to a 67MB podcast with no background applications running, receiving no emails, and itunes over cellular disabled.
