The security updates might be worth it. I noticed the new 3.2 kernel build still doesn't have cpu throttling enabled however, so i'd stick with my 4.19 build or the 3.13 kernel I linked.

For this, would we update all instances of "http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports" in the sources to be replaced with "http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu"?@sanfrancisofont1984 : Apparently it was moved to http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ recently. Just update your /etc/apt/sources.list and all will be well again.

Oh yeah, that's just what happens with a Radeon 9000 Pro with 16.04. There's not really a way around it. While it's possible to disable accelerated graphics, which causes the crash, all you end up with is a very glitchy display, I wouldn't call it useable in that state. From what I can gather, it's some sort of issue in the open source driver they've never bothered to fix, and there's no proprietary fallback for PowerPC.Hey all, I was attempting to install 16.04, however on every attempt, the system would inevitably get stuck. Regardless of boot parameters, shortly after launching the installer, or any program really, the system would lock up and the display begins flicking on and off. Was wondering if there was any help to be had, maybe something I'm missing. The system is an MDD FW400 G4, 2GB RAM, ATI 9000 Pro, dual 1.25ghz

Seems like it works fine in 12.04, but I'm not in a position to check right now.
Ah well good to know, though still disappointing. I will try 12.04 than. Last time I did I got caught up attempting to partition the disk, but now I have an entirely separate drive for itOh yeah, that's just what happens with a Radeon 9000 Pro with 16.04. My own experience tells me that it is better to use nVidia even with nouveau than ATi/AMD. M.B. they work good in Mac OS, but not in Linux. The ATI rage 128's aren't very well supported in PPC Linux.
The Ubuntu PowerPC FAQ for 12.04 states that users with ATI Rage 128 cards will experience booting into low graphics mode, and that would resolve after running the Update Manager. The 12.04 install from Ubuntu did so for me, but low graphics mode was indecipherable, so I gave up. I suspect my crash with the Remix disk was related.I'm guessing it's a graphics card issue causing lightdm/x11 to crash. The ATI rage 128's aren't very well supported in PPC Linux. Some people have had success, but it involved custom kernels and other hacks. There's info on the net and i think this very forum as well, but it might not be worth the effort on that machine. For a machine that slow i would suggest trying openbsd as you'll probably get better results.

No problem about the rage128 - I realize I'm working sort of on my own with it. BTW - ubuntu 12 is derived from wheezy (debian 7) as detailed in that thread. That's why I took this particular detour. I wanted to get suspend working (Which it is for me now - It took a couple of tries before it 'took') and debian seems to support my video card better than ubuntu 16.0.4, which I used for over a year. I'll probably post about that elsewhere.Wish i could help with the rage128 issue. I just don't have that old of hardware to test with. As for Arctic Fox, ubuntu 12 = debian 8, and i build those browsers on ubuntu 12. @xeno74 has builds of arctic fox for ubuntu 10 available however, which should be equivalent to debian 7. See this thread. You'll need to ppa install gcc-4.8 for his build to work. This is already done and installed in lubuntu 12 remix and macbuntu by default.

That was me, and yes I've tried different media, including Maxell DVD-R (the golden one) with no result. To the one trying to install on a Pismo Powerbook (I think I'm in the right thread), but couldn't get the DVDs to boot:
Media matters.
I was given a huge stack of Verbatim DVD-R by my kids. Every one I tried to burn on my 2011 MacBook Pro would not boot, and quite often would not mount, on my Pismo. I also have had problems booting Verbatim CDs. I ordered in a stack of Maxell maxdata DVD-R this week, burned all of the images at the beginning of this thread, and all booted on the Pismo.
