No. There never was a powerpc linux version of skype. You might want to try something like Ekiga or Linphone if you are looking for voice/video chat.

Yes, I believe so. Haven't actually tried it yet myself. Make a backup of your original sources.list and then try it and let us know how it goes.

Worked like a charm. Here's my updated sources.list.

Hey all, I was attempting to install 16.04, however on every attempt, the system would inevitably get stuck. Regardless of boot parameters, shortly after launching the installer, or any program really, the system would lock up and the display begins flicking on and off. Was wondering if there was any help to be had, maybe something I'm missing. The system is an MDD FW400 G4, 2GB RAM, ATI 9000 Pro, dual 1.25ghz

Oh yeah, that's just what happens with a Radeon 9000 Pro with 16.04. There's not really a way around it. While it's possible to disable accelerated graphics, which causes the crash, all you end up with is a very glitchy display, I wouldn't call it useable in that state. From what I can gather, it's some sort of issue in the open source driver they've never bothered to fix, and there's no proprietary fallback for PowerPC.

Seems like it works fine in 12.04, but I'm not in a position to check right now.

Same here. I had nothing but issues trying to get 16.04 working properly on my QS/867 with Radeon 9000. Eventual lock ups, screen flashing, exactly what has been mentioned. I ended up just going with 12.04 and it works perfectly.

Ah well good to know, though still disappointing. I will try 12.04 than. Last time I did I got caught up attempting to partition the disk, but now I have an entirely separate drive for it

I am considering trying to install 16.04 on my PMG5 with the radeon card - My question pertains to the loud fans, once in the Linux OS, do the fans stop roaring ?

To the one trying to install on a Pismo Powerbook (I think I'm in the right thread), but couldn't get the DVDs to boot:

Media matters.

I was given a huge stack of Verbatim DVD-R by my kids. Every one I tried to burn on my 2011 MacBook Pro would not boot, and quite often would not mount, on my Pismo. I also have had problems booting Verbatim CDs. I ordered in a stack of Maxell maxdata DVD-R this week, burned all of the images at the beginning of this thread, and all booted on the Pismo. Stack of 25 is UPC 025215627613

I hadn't noticed earlier, but I am getting errors with my 16.04 Remix DVD. Actually, I made two DVDs, both of which have the same symptoms. I had walked away while the first was booting to the desktop, and everything worked as expected. However, when rebooting the DVD after verifying that everything in my Home directory was backed up, I noticed the following errors:

blk-update-request: I/O error, dev sr0 sector nnnnnn (there were a couple of different values, which were not the same between DVDs)

Buffer I/O error on dev sr0, logical block zzzzzz, async page read

The second message did not always follow the first, and nnnnnn was always different from zzzzzz. The messages would repeat, sometimes alternate, until the boot process eventually continued to the desktop.

After doing the installation, when I told the installer to quit, the same thing happened, except the errors never cleared. I waited awhile, forced shutdown, and rebooted to my hard drive with no problems.

I had originally intended to install the 12.0.4 or MacBuntu remix, but ran into a problem that I don't know how to solve. This happens with the remix CD, and both DVD images. The computer boots up fine, but then puts out the message:

init: lightdm main process (nnnn) terminated with status 1

and am left at a terminal prompt. The number represented by nnnn varies.

Suggestions?

I'm guessing it's a graphics card issue causing lightdm/x11 to crash. The ATI rage 128's aren't very well supported in PPC Linux. Some people have had success, but it involved custom kernels and other hacks. There's info on the net and i think this very forum as well, but it might not be worth the effort on that machine. For a machine that slow i would suggest trying openbsd as you'll probably get better results.

Cheers

The Ubuntu PowerPC FAQ for 12.04 states that users with ATI Rage 128 cards will experience booting into low graphics mode, and that would resolve after running the Update Manager. The 12.04 install from Ubuntu did so for me, but low graphics mode was indecipherable, so I gave up. I suspect my crash with the Remix disk was related.

I installed Wheezy (Debian 7.11) on a spare hard drive, but have a few issues. Suspend is not working - or rather it suspends but doesn't wake properly.

I was hoping to work with the 12.04 Remix disk as a repository, but
apt-cdrom add won't allow it:

This disc is called:
'Lubuntu 12.04 _Precise Pangolin_ - Release powerpc (20120423)'
Copying package lists...gpgv: Signature made Mon 23 Apr 2012 10:38:43 AM EDT using DSA key ID FBB75451
gpgv: Can't check signature: public key not found
E: Sub-process gpgv returned an error code (2)
W: Signature verification failed for: /media/cdrom0/dists/precise/Release.gpg

I'm temporarily (?) stumped on that.

FYI - There's mixed information about Debian 7 compatibility of Arcticfox, Spidermail, et al. The PowerPC Linux Wiki says Debian 7+ but the download sites say Debian 8. All crash on launch for me with the following error (arcticfox):

don@pismo:~$ /usr/lib/arcticfox/arcticfox
XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /usr/lib/arcticfox/libnspr4.so:
/lib/powerpc-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.15' not found (required by /usr/lib/arcticfox/libnspr4.so)
Couldn't load XPCOM.

Posted (painfully - no surprise) from IceWeasel in Wheezy

Wish i could help with the rage128 issue. I just don't have that old of hardware to test with. As for Arctic Fox, ubuntu 12 = debian 8, and i build those browsers on ubuntu 12. @xeno74 has builds of arctic fox for ubuntu 10 available however, which should be equivalent to debian 7. See this thread. You'll need to ppa install gcc-4.8 for his build to work. This is already done and installed in lubuntu 12 remix and macbuntu by default.

Cheers

No problem about the rage128 - I realize I'm working sort of on my own with it. BTW - ubuntu 12 is derived from wheezy (debian 7) as detailed in that thread. That's why I took this particular detour. I wanted to get suspend working (Which it is for me now - It took a couple of tries before it 'took') and debian seems to support my video card better than ubuntu 16.0.4, which I used for over a year. I'll probably post about that elsewhere.

I'lll take a look at getting gcc-4.8 and seeing if ArcticFox will work for me, and I'm still researching whether I can get the MacBuntu disk accepted by apt-cdrom.

Thanks!

Decided to try Macbuntu on my 1.5ghz Sawtooth with Radeon 9000 GPU. I chose the "install alongside..." option to install it alongside OS 9. The installation went well, but when I rebooted, I got stuck at the blinking floppy with a question mark screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?

That was me, and yes I've tried different media, including Maxell DVD-R (the golden one) with no result.
Even tried booting from Open Firmware.
It's no bother as the Pismo runs brilliantly with Tiger.

Cheers :)
