Yea I’m getting it. Anytime a new design comes out I can’t help but look at the “old” design and feel like it’s really outdated. I just know that every time I use the 2020 MBA I’ll be thinking I’m using an inferior product. I know it’s not logical, just how my brain works.

Anyways, I’m going to get $400ish form trading in my 2020 version, and will use $300 of cash back I got from my Apple Card so will end up paying $500ish for the upgrade. Luckily that’s something I’m able to afford, and to me it’s worth it to get the updated design, new midnight color, MagSafe, brighter screen, etc. honestly super excited about it too.

Lol, like I said in other posts I have only really been looking at my 2011 MacBook Pro. So the new design looks the same to me and the older MBAir looks like a cutting edge design to me! Kind of funny how that worked out for me.

We have a 2020 MBA in the house but I never paid any attention to it before. It’s a base model my husband bought for one of the kids for school so I barely saw it until they let me try it out to see if it would suit me so I could decide on purchasing a refurbished one with upgraded RAM and storage.

So I bought myself a refurbished one that recently arrived. I’m very happy with it, but MagSafe is a nice convenience I sometimes miss and I think you will appreciate. There are some significant upgrades beyond aesthetics I’m sure you will appreciate on the M2 Air. I hope you get your new computer shipped to you fast and that you enjoy it and it serves you well.

Someday I may get a refurbished one as an upgrade to the refurbished MBA M1 I just got. I’m not any kind of power user, so I’m fine being a couple of years back on laptops. Now that I’ve tried a refurb and see how new they can feel, I am comfortable with the idea of doing this again.

I'm in doubt:
  1. M2 Air base config SSD is expectedly 50% slower than M1 base
  2. M2 is an overclocked M1 with 30% more power consumption at peak in a passively cooled laptop, where the M2 already struggles in a fan-supported setup
  3. Price bump, making it as expensive in a 16/512 config as the 14" macBook Pro
Although I suspect base M1 Airs in a dual-NAND config will soon be a thing of the past: IMHO the only, price x specs. considered, macBooks that make sense now are M1 Air (base or 16 GB) and MacBook Pro M1 14" (base)

I did look at windows laptops - since I work 99% in a browser and office applications - but both Dell and Lenovo are just as expensive as the 14" Pro for comparable machines .... ahh, decisions .... decisions 😂

close enough not to worry, do you work in jungle no power?
Well, I live in EU where in these days you can't be sure you won't have to go back to the stone age one day.
Really what I was referring to with my questions about battery was that battery life in normal use is not the same between the two.

I use an M1 MacBook Air for an 8 hour day with the computer in use for nearly all of it and end the day with 60% battery remaining. The M1 Pro isn’t even going to be close.
Yeah, that is my impression about this too that they are not equal. I know your can charge battery and so on but in laptop battery life is nice feature in case you actually ever use it as a laptop... I've had my share of notebooks with lousy battery life and MBA M1 is the first where it really has impressed me during the long term ownership.

I am in the middle of consolidating my systems. I recently got rid of my main desktop -2015 27" iMac. I would have kept it if Apple continued to support the latest macOS, but since they are not, I got rid of it.

I also have a base MBA M1 8GB / 256 GB flash and 7 core GPU. This is my secondary/spare work system (my primary work system is a Windows laptop), which I will need to return in the next month or so.
I will be without a personal computer in a month or so, so I am exploring my options. I no longer need a permanent desktop, plus Apple stopped making 27" iMac, so I decided to go the laptop-only route. I am planning to get a USB-C QHD monitor (1440p) for the occasional use to supplement a bigger screen when needed.
With the EDU discount, i am looking at the following options - all systems have a base cpu/gpu and 16 gb / 1 tb storage.

mbp 14” m1 - $2029
mbp 13” m2 - $1759
mba m2 - $1659
mba m1 - $1439

Based on my usage even, the base M1 is plenty, but since I have a choice to pick my system, I am exploring different models.

All these systems will perform well above my needs, so my only real criteria are battery life and support longevity. Can it be assumed that M2 systems would receive the newer macOS for longer than M1/ M1 Pro models? I also like the wedge design of the current MBA, so I am partially leaning toward the current MBA M1, which is the most cost-effective solution. Choices, choices :)

why does it matter if 60% left over, could be 20% still have to charge it lol
Point is that when you need actually maximum hours out of battery, then it matters.
Also for the battery longevity, less charge cycles = longer battery life (as in terms of needing a replacement battery).
Anyway, this all you keep bringing up is a moot point, since from my understading others (and I) have been referring to absolute battery run time.

Basically if discussion was about what you say (but it was not), I could get by with the machine that has 2 hour run time on battery for say 80% of the times I actually need to use it on battery but in that 20% I want it to last as long as possible.

I’m not sure if this is a serious question or not but I’ll assume it is. I have 60% battery left after 8 hours of work. That still leaves 16 hours left in the day. I can continue to use my notebook for another 8 hours without needing to carry a charger with me.

Exactly, that is my point too about this.

This happens every new apple release, on the 12.9 M1 day my local retail store had them, ordered online for pick up at 9am and had it in hand by 10am, will be the same with the Air 2 for 256 and 512, unless a BTO.
Better wait to see the review a few days before release day.

I'm upgrading from 2017 Air 8gb/512 ssd and I was going to buy a M2 but now I'm eyeing the M1. The most CPU intensive applications I have open at one time are Photoshop, Lightroom, Safari and Chrome and my 2017 Air is really struggling to even use Canva.com.

I thought I was going to buy the M2 / 24GB / 1TB in Midnight or Starlight (I'm not crazy about any of the color options available)

Now I'm looking at the M1 / 16GB / 1TB in Gold (I really like this color) I like the wedge shape, it has fans and I can save money. Also, I can get it refurbished, so even more savings.

Not sure which one I'm going to buy.

The m1 makes far more financial sense unless you need style

I’ve gotten SO MUCH use out of my base M1 Air over the past couple years, without any hiccups. So I’ll be upgrading to the M2 for the modern design, better display and 1080p webcam.

My hunch with the SSD fiasco with the new “Pro” is that they are not giving chips to a device that few will order and the new Air’s will have the expected Read\Write speeds. It’s a shame, though. Apple could have avoided this mess just by being transparent.

The price was not really even an issue for me until I compared similar build to an M1 Pro laptop. Oh well. Gotta go pick up my new Studio. I’ll get an M2 Air maybe this time next year.
What fiasco? I have a Pro. No fiasco here. Thing runs fantastic!
