I'm upgrading from 2017 Air 8gb/512 ssd and I was going to buy a M2 but now I'm eyeing the M1. The most CPU intensive applications I have open at one time are Photoshop, Lightroom, Safari and Chrome and my 2017 Air is really struggling to even use Canva.com.

I thought I was going to buy the M2 / 24GB / 1TB in Midnight or Starlight (I'm not crazy about any of the color options available)

Now I'm looking at the M1 / 16GB / 1TB in Gold (I really like this color) I like the wedge shape, it has fans and I can save money. Also, I can get it refurbished, so even more savings.

Not sure which one I'm going to buy.
Good thinking. I have that m1 but in Space Gray. Not a fan of the Gold. I think you know this but the m1 and m2 MBA are fanless.

The m1 makes far more financial sense unless you need style
I'm also thinking about chassis rigidity of M2 Air. I mean total thickness is 11.3 millimeters, so basically bottom chassis is what 7 or 8 millimeters thick, so how thin sheets of aluminium is used in the chassis then? I've already read some complaints about MBP 14" and 16" that bottom cover is so thin that it flexes easily when just handling the unit and those are much thicker units.

Just thinking out loud, if the bottom unit has 1 mm bottom place and 1 mm top, it leaves 5 or 6 mm space for battery and mainboard and such... If plates are 2 mm each, then 3 or 4 which I think it is too small, it would be pretty impossible to fit all parts inside and leave room for some battery expanding. So to me it sounds like the aluminium might be pretty thin. That combined with flat design could also make it less rigid/solid compared to old design where these tapered edges actually reinforce structure.

Anyone else thought about the same things? I did not notice any Apple event videos of small reviews mentioning anything about these type of things.

The only thing I would mention is the M1 MBA does not have fans. (Not that they really, really matter in the M1 MBP 13"...)

I don't really use Photoshop or Lightroom, but I bought an M1 MBA with 16/512 and I love it. A total workhorse.

I haven't seen anything, but it is a first-gen and you never really know until you see it over time...

I’ve gotten SO MUCH use out of my base M1 Air over the past couple years, without any hiccups. So I’ll be upgrading to the M2 for the modern design, better display and 1080p webcam.
If you are going with base storage, you might want to verify they use 2x128 vs 1x256 like the M2 MPB...

Yeah, it is too early to tell. But just crunching base unit thickness values in my head makes me really wonder how thick and rigid the chassis can be. I have a feeling that old design with rounder shape adds rigidness to the chassis even maybe actual aluminum thickness could be nearly the same.

Probably safer to order 512GB right away to secure it has the same performance as the Air M1 even in the worst scenarios. Surely M2 CPU itself is more powerful but lack of RAM in base model needs a lots of swapping and there you need a fast SSD. I think many people will order larger SSD if base 256GB is the same as in Pro M2.
Too bad Air base units still do not come with 16/512 default. I guess in todays inflation soaring all over the world 8/256 base will secure overall profit margin staying high as all the upgrades buyers make are almost fully profit as parts like 256 vs 512 SSD are almost the same price. I bet 256 > 512GB upgrade will be popular in MBA M2.

Well if I am dropping $2.3KAUD for a 8/512 I want something better than a 2 year old model

Well the MBA M2 is a new model. Granted that CPU is improved from M1 and still only 5nm but still, the M2 CPU is this year model, M1 is from 2020....

Me.
Just ordered a 8/10, 16GB, 512 SSD Midnight. The form factor was a driving factor. That and I can give my M1 Air to my daughter for college.
I could see this. I plan on using my 16/512 M1 MBA for 5 years, but if someone needed it for college, whatareyagonnado? It's like you HAVE to upgrade!!!! You are doing it for your daughter! 🥰

Be realistic about your PS/LR use because you may want that 24GB RAM; it will def pay off with large layered files and when you have LR and PS open at the same time like if you are using 'Edit In PS'. Even my 16GB M1-Pro gets a little laggy when painting adjustment layer brushes in PS. Its not bad and I'm fine with my purchase, but it is something I notice.

The m1 makes far more financial sense unless you need style
Or the added speed and 24GB RAM.

M1 air does not have fans

Unless you mean people who are fans of it ;)

Alright so who in this thread said nah originally and still went for it ?

:p
I bought and received the M1 Air over a week ago, but I have had an M2 Air 8 core 16 gb 1 TB Starlight configuration saved in my favorites for weeks, so I did have to go to the Apple Store site and smile and wave at it. I checked and was surprised I could actually get it in just a couple of weeks even though I checked hours after preorders began.

No, I did not order it. I’m honestly not even tempted, but years of being a trigger happy preorderer of iPhones did make me feel very twitchy. I feel like I forgot to do something important 🤣

1000% this. I'm in the same boat...:)

Aint that the truth. Props for resisting though and knowing you dont need it

I felt similarly, I was already up when preorders went up and still looked at it but ruled it out

for me its more of a cosmetic upgrade than a practical one. and im not moaning about the current m1 aesthetic I like classic looking Macs

I convinced myself that I needed the extra 8GB of RAM with the 24 GB model. It didn't take a lot of convincing.

I placed the order for one on my M1 Air last night. As I continued to use the M1 I realized there was no immediate need to upgrade. I cancelled the order. Maybe in a month or two when I pay a few bills down and that will give me time to at least see them in person and make a judgment on the reviews.
