Hardware has nothing to do with it being a computer or not. The hardware was NEVER lacking going years back now. The A-series could run a full PC operating system on 6gb RAM.

It's always been the OS limiting.
I know its not all about hardware. No need to point out the obvious. I think the new iPad Pro's will help push Apple and developers to make the OS even better as an computer replacement.

I'm still trying to figure out the scenario in which you need a maxed out iPad. Even when I'm editing photos, I'm still kind of forced to go back to my Mac...especially when I'm working with multiple drives/cards.

Maybe, maybe not. The iPhone hardware sure hasn't pushed iOS much (photography is about it really). Basic function widgets that are not even dynamic like the old are the biggest change to the OS. Sill the same wall of icons otherwise. Not really hardware taxing.

The phone has been able to do split-screen in terms of hardware for a LONG time for instance but Apple has not pushed that function like iPad and Android.

The iPad has had MORE than powerful enough hardware for years now frankly to do what you say.

My thing is they've had this opportunity now for many years. the iPad was probably already powerful enough as a desktop replacement with the iPad Pro

and yet we're still here years later and iOS is still the biggest limiting factor. Not the hardware.

As a recent convert back to iOS from Android, the QoL and use of iOS is still Apple's biggest limiting factor with their devices.

we're at a point where honeslty, on the iPhone in particular IOS feels like a 2011 feature phone.

iOS likely just needs a rebuild at this point to fix a bunch of these QoL issues

You are right about Apple being slow to with iPadOS. I think it should be a lot farther along. With the new memory offering, I hope Apple is finally getting serious. The new Thunderbolt option leads me to believe they finally are.

For all my gripes, I do love the upgrade to the front facing camera. I can’t wait to see people test and see if it really fixes the awkward angle issue. I just wish it somehow also solved the daily annoyance of my hand covering the camera for FaceID. Unlocking my iPad and paying for things is not a seamless experience my hand is constantly covering the camera. For the higher price they’re charging it would have been nice if they could have added TouchID that they added to the iPad Air.

What I really want to know is, does the 11" model have 120hz? Looking for the ultimate portable gaming tablet and that's basically a requirement for me to move away from the latest iPad Mini. I currently stream off my iPad Mini and the refresh rate/output of the iPad Mini + lightning-based HDMI adapter is very poor and stuttery even on high end thunderbolt capture hardware. I can only assume the restricted HDMI output of the lightning port is to blame. I hope there will be a thunderbolt-to-HDMI option for this new iPad.

Also is the 11" model referring just to screen size? Did we get actual dimensions to compare to the mini?

why, oh why, does this thing not run appcode/xcode + a full blown posix console.... it's getting silly!
just put it into a virtualized sandbox that can run in the background and allow all the developer apps interface with it.

as a software developer I'D REALLY like to develop on this. combined with a magic keyboard, from a hardware perspective it's basically a more versatile, more capable macbook air. i'd pay a lot extra to get that capability.

I'm sure by WWDC 2021 we will have a new Mac OS/IOS combined together. Let's call it MI-OS, sounds catchy right.

I see the future of Apple and where this is all heading.

That much RAM for what? Did ANYONE have an issue with 6gb before? Even with multiple windows?

It's STILL iPad OS, nothing there is different. They would have to make the OS far different to justify buying a more expensive iPad for an overkill M1 and mini-LED.
Sounds like they are planning some bigger changes for iPadOS at WWDC for the software if they are starting to recognize RAM as a spec differentiator.

Never, EVER complain when you get more RAM than what you need today.

the lesson over my tech life. What is sufficient today is out of date tomorrow.

Apple has learned a lot from their aenemic RAM offerings on iPhones in the past, that the lifespan they wanted wasn't there. phones would get slow too fast on feature updates that need more performance.

Worst case of getting too much RAM? Nothing
Worst case of getting too little RAM? Bad performance and slow response, with far more limited end of life timeline.

We all should remember Bill Gates famous claim in the 80's... "640K ought to be enough for anybody."

At this point iPad OS needs to just die. The iPad display is as large as a notebook display and it has a pointer… both with a trackpad and a pen. This tablet is absolutely crippled by iPad OS.

That's a hard sell to start selling the hardware, with a price increase, before the software that can begin to touch using it...

It's not complaining about future-proofing. But unless they plan some MAJOR OS updates its wasted RAM all but for a niche user base like some have posted about (illustrators, etc). The average person won't care if it is 8 or 16. They care more you are now at an over $1000 starting price. And unlike an iPhone they aren't going to their carrier for monthly payments so it's a very different animal.

Same argument with the M1. Great but what does it do for average Joe user right now trying to sell it before any OS update? For a $100 more starting price. I've NEVER heard anyone say the last A series was slow. Absent some big OS update, which may or may not even be done in the future, it's a hard sell.

Parading big specs is manly just justifying the price increase, nothing more, to 95%+ or more of average users not in a niche creative sector.

If you go back, my argument is give people a big screen option but with an A-series or M1, and whatever RAM or storage you want. THAT is "pro" to me. $999 was already an expensive sell for the average user (before accessories).

We heard the same arguments with the iPhone. Oh its "only" going up $50 or $100, stop whining. Then year after year it crept up from $749 for the first Plus size phone to where we're at a $1,100 base price big display phone in not many years (what, 4 years?)

That’s just the thing though. The average person isn’t even considering an iPad Pro. At best they’re deciding if an Air is worth the extra bucks over the 10.2” iPad. Of the people that are looking at the iPad Pro, I think the RAM absolutely matters. I’m sure they sell millions of units, but relative to the whole lineup, I think the iPad Pro already is a niche product.

The front-facing camera is still on the side (portrait mode) instead of the middle (landscape mode)?
Are you kidding me?

Anyone who does serious video conferencing knows how awkward it is to video conference with the front-facing camera on the side. It's the worst possible positioning. A really dumb move Apple.
