I want to go with LG because they seem to work best with Mac and also with 27” because of its 163 ppi. Had it narrowed down to 27UL500, 27UL850, and 27UN850, and wanted to go with the UN because it was newest and had all the bells and whistles. It’s more than I’ve spent on a monitor before, but it seems to be worth it.
I thought I would add the USB ports built into the back of the monitor work well. I went with the UN because its the most recent also and because I got it for the same price as the L at the time I bought it.

What resolution do you run the UN850 at? I did 3840 x 2160 in display setting but everything is so small it was practically unusable. Am I missing something? I was really surprised. I’m temporarily scaled to 1440 but I really originally thought I wouldn’t have to scale. Can you clarify?

That’s normal. You need to scale the resolution. Almost everybody on 27/32’’ 4k needs scaling.

The reason is the high PPI. Retina display is even « worse ». The benefit is that you get really really sharp text even when scaled.

Okay. Would you mind taking a look at this post? Made me think it was possible to run my new monitor at native 4K. Is there still a point to having it or am I better off getting a QHD one and run it at native 1440? Will the mini run hot scaling all the time?

4k on 27 inch is bare minimum if you want a minimum of text sharpness. Do not go under 4k for 27 inch and 32 inch. Above 32 inch, 6K And 8K will be required to get the same level of sharpness.

The Mini M1 is far, far, far better than any previous mac with integrated graphics. It can handle scaling flawlessly.

So I’m not losing anything by scaling down to looks like 2560 x 1440? That’s what you’d do?

I got a Lenovo T27p-10 for my M1 Mac Mini. 27" 4K USB-C monitor with 350 brightness. Can be used as a USB hub. Really a spectacular monitor for the price. Added a Logitech C920 webcam for video-conference. I highly recommend it.

True that the Dell is a prime monitor. I actually chose the Lenovo over the Dell because of rtings.com previous recommendation of choosing another brand than Dell for Mac users. Using coupons, I paid around 350 USD for my Lenovo. If it wouldn't be for Dell's flip-flop of compatibility with various versions of MacOS, I probably would have went for it. Keep in mind that you're not getting USB-C for that price though, which doesn't make it a direct comparison.

"Due to numerous complaints of compatibility issues and Dell's unwillingness to offer support to those affected, all Dell monitors have been removed from our list of recommendations for the time being and until the situation is resolved. At this time, we don't test for compatibility; if you run into any issues using a monitor when connected to a MacBook, please let us know in the discussions."

Weird. I've read numerous good experience with Dell UltraSharp monitors and Apple computers in general. Thanks for reference.

Can you guys also help me to choose?

I'm literally thorn between many models on the market and getting more confused the more I look at models.

I've just sold my 5K iMac and I know that almost every monitor on the market won't be good as it unless I pay ridiculous amount of money.

Well.. this M1 Mac Mini will be a gap filler for me until Apple Silicon based iMacs get released. So, I don't want to spend a ton of money for a thing I'll sell within a year or two maybe. Shortly my wishes are like these;

  • I prefer to be below 200$ point while getting the best color production
  • Glossy screen if possible
  • Vesa mount is preferred since I want to use it with a monitor arm
  • Screen size doesn't matter that much. I like 27" screens but full hd resolution might not fit with 1080p, so 24" is also good for me.

I ordered a new M1 mini, but desk space is cramped. No built-in speakers on my monitor, either. I do have several nice headphones and headphone amp I plan on using for extended listening/consumption.

But how bad is that tiny speaker for just listening to a 10 minute YouTube video? Unintelligible like previous minis, or can I at least hear dialog?

For a budget below 200$, I would go for this monitor at 119$:

You get a decent size at 27" IPS monitor from a well known brand. Should hold you until you get your iMac.

I read that also old Apple Cinema displays work with DVI to USB C adapter.
