I only experience the problem when I let it sleep automatically, but if I manually choose sleep from the apple menu it wakes normally.

This happened to me quite often with my MBP 2018 13-inch, though I were never sure if it was because of my 3rd-party-USB-C-HDMI-adapter (there unfortunately is no 4k60 Adapter from Apple for my MBP). Incredibly annoying. Always had to unplug and replug in this case to get it to work.

I was having that issue all the time on my 2017 until I stopped using an adapter and switched to a straight HDMI to USB-C cable. Haven't had any issues since.

It depends on the monitor. I have three m1 mbps between me and my wife, and a total of 6 external monitors hooked up to them. Some will fail to wake up once or twice per week. Some always do. The only thing I can tell is those that occasionally fail to wake up take longest to power cycle. Those are mostly Dell 4ks and ultrawides, all hooked via dp or usb-c.

This definitely is not only an M1 issue. I have had this issue on 2018 Mac mini since I bought it. I can easily recreate it on both of my 32" LG monitors (one a 4K and one non-4k). When it occurs, I have to plug in my HP 24" monitor, let it boot. and then switch it over to the LG monitor. Search the boards and you will see all sorts of issues with LG monitors not waking up with the Mac mini.

I have similar issues with my HP 27f 4k monitor, where I have to turn the monitor off and on a few times until it gets the signal. Not sure what the issue is exactly but this happens very often on:
- Intel Mac mini
- Intel MacBook Pro 16 inch
- Intel Lenovo IdeaPad

If it wasn't for the MacBook Pro I would have blamed Intel because they all have Intel GPUs, but I think this might be an issue with the HP monitor itself. Funny enough when the monitor get connected I can see in in Displays and even in Windows, but it doesn't turn on 🤷‍♂️

Happens often with my 2020 MBP 13. Totally random. Sometimes it works. about 50% of the time I need to unplug and replug the screen

Was having a bunch of sleep/wake issues with my M1 Mac mini 16gb and LG Ultrafine (not the Apple versions, newer one) and external hard drives. I had to adjust some energy saving settings (Prevent the computer from sleeping when the display is off: checked, Put Hard disks to sleep when possible: uncheck). Plus my monitor I believe was causing kernel panic crashes when my mini went to sleep it would just crash and reboot. SOLUTION was to change the DisplayPort settings on my monitor from 1.4 to 1.2.

Apple needs to play better with non-Apple external monitors (unless they intend to start making their own that aren't more than a Kidney) OR LG needs update their software and drives, I don't know who to blame for these problems. Getting the reality check on not being able to control brightness and volume with keyboard since replacing my iMac.

Also having audio issues with FaceTime. The speakers in my monitor don't work. the only output that works is the mini’s speaker which are… not great.

M1 MacBook Pro here. External display does not wake from sleep using a CalDigit TS3+ dock. I have to open the lid, wait for external display to power on, then close the lid. 2017 MacBook Pro works flawlessly however.

Yep. How'd you guess... :(

Cause it's the steaming pile of horse crap. Easily the worst OSX edition since OSX 10.0 For a last few OS releases it's been the case that every new iteration of OSX has been slightly worse than the predecessor as in it introduced more bugs than it solved problems but Big Sur absolutely takes the cake and smashes it on the floor. Then it pisses on it.

Big Sur is what's crippling M1 machines and somehow they even managed to even cripple Intel stuff that used to work properly. I'm not optimistic how Apple will get out of this. I didn't update none of my Macs to Big Sur because I have M1 Big Sur and I could tell right away the real problem is OS which is a bug hive and to make it even worse Apple has stalled delivering timely updates and solutions. Seems like they are stuck.

I have a 4k LG monitor. Intermittently, my mini has that problem. If I switch the monitor's input off of HDMI and then back, the mini's screen returns. It's a bit of a pain, but not a deal-breaker for me since it's infrequent. On the other hand, my Magic Trackpad is more frequently losing contact with my mini. I hope they fix that for good.

This isn't just a M1 problem. I have the 2018 (actually early 2020) Mac mini.
I use a Samsung TV via HDMI and often when it boots up I don't get a signal to the TV.
The only thing I can do is hold the power button down to turn it off then turn it back on again.
I also have the issue where the sound is reset to Mac mini internal speakers not the TV speakers.
Resetting the Mac mini does not work, only by completely turning it off and back on does the issue resolve.

I also sporadically have this issue with base model Mini and Apple Pro XDR display. Had to disconnect XDR from AC power and reconnect to resolve the issue.

I have had this issue intermittently since I got my M1 in February, using with a brand new
LG 32UN880-B display. Haven't had the wake issue as much but nearly every time I wake the monitor from sleep, the resolution has switched (using the scaled setting) and occupies ~2/3 of the screen leaving a large negative space around the desktop. It's super annoying, and well below my expectations for a brand new highly touted machine. Really hope Apple is addressing this via an OS update soon.

I have same problem with MacBook Air M1 - works sometimes, other times not.

A problem with both Dell monitor using USB-C and "official" LG UltraFine using Thunderbolt.

With the Dell monitor I can turn the monitor off/on, with the UltraFine - with no power switch - the Thunderbolt cable has to be unplugged/plugged several times.

Another really annoying issue is that M1 Mac's can't use software to control brightness on 3rd party monitors.

Some customers who have purchased an M1 Mac mini have been experiencing an issue that causes the machine not to wake a connected third-party display from sleep.

m1-mac-mini-vignette.jpg-feature.jpg

This is not an issue that's affecting all M1 Mac mini owners, but there are numerous complaints on the MacRumors forums and the Apple Support Communities dating back to November when the Mac mini was first released. MacRumors reader gooimac explains:MacRumors reader Mike, who emailed us about the issue, has seen the same problems. This issue appears to be affecting a wide range of displays that connect over Thunderbolt, HDMI, and DisplayPort adapters, but there are also plenty of people who are having no issues at all.

It's not clear what the problem is, but Apple has been looking into one M1 Mac mini display issue that causes strange pink squares to appear on displays connected to one of the machines.

Apple is aware of the issue, and there could be a fix in the works that's coming in a future update. One solution for now may be to disable the feature that puts the Mac mini to sleep, but that's not ideal. The other solution is to unplug and replug in a display that's not responding after a Mac mini wakes from sleep, but that too is an inelegant solution. There appears to be no other fix available at this time.

I was having this issue and it was driving me crazy. The solution that worked for me was to not put the hard drive to sleep. No problem since I did that.
