No such problems for me... seriously, since I bougth the M1 mini no pink artifacts, no disconnects ... just smooth sailing...
For future reference I'm using Dell P2415Q via Belkin USB-C to Display Port Cable.

Can we all just agree that Apple can't build computers anymore.

I have the last Intel Mini and it constantly suffers from WiFi and Bluetooth issues and was a complete waste of money. It also struggles with screens / resolutions that Apple says would work.

And my 2012. I thought it was just me...

And me on my Late 2012 Macmini Server, running OpenCore-patched Big Sur.

Two displays connected - one HDMI, and one DisplayPort-through-thunderbolt-connector. The DP occasionally loses sync and then the only way to fix is to restart the Mac - unplugging DP adapter and replugging doesn't fix. HDMI unaffected. If I VNC onto the Mac from my iPad, I can see both displays still!!

I have it worse then this. I have two monitors (1 ultra wide 4K and 1 regular 4K).
About 25-30% of the time when it goes to slee it very slowly wakes the monitors but the machine itself is laggy- keyboard is slow to respond, mouse moves jagged, can’t move anything- this almost always requires a full shut down restart

I have the same issue, but with the last ten Intel mini and an LG Ultrafine... wake is slow at best, sometimes non existent.
Considering the amount of marketing material picturing the Mini with the Ultrafine I'm surprised at how bad the support is.

Not just M1 Mac Mini that's effected. Intel Mac Minis have the same problem.
When I start mine (mains screen connected via USB C, secondary via HDMI), either one or the other monitor remains off, sometimes both. Messing around with disconnecting cables then reconnecting them at a different order usually sorts it after about 5-10 minutes, until the next time. Next time could be the following day or 1 week later. It's random.

No solution so far.

I just figured it was a Big Sur issue. I have an M1 MacBook Pro and it is pretty regular. Either not coming on or coming on and then going out right away (saying it was disconnected), or the computer simply being on and not connecting to the external screen. Caveat: this is with it in clamshell mode and I have not tried it open. Again, just figured it was a Big Sur issue that would be fixed down the road.

I have a M1 Mac mini 16/1TB and a 32 Samsung 4k monitor...ZERO issues.
Similar but with different monitor. My only issue is crashes in... TextEdit. Resizing windows and scrolling often causes TextEdit to crash. The shame of it is that TextEdit is the most basic of apps and should have been the first for Apple to get right.

Can confirm what others have stated. Not a Big Sur exclusive issue and not an M1 exclusive issue. I see this issue using a Dell S2716DG with my 2018 Mini, since launch, and my M1 Air and Mini. Happens with HDMI or DP.

Higher quality cable seemed to help a bit at first but that may have been completely placebo effect. Power cycling the monitor doesn’t work nor does switching inputs. I’ve even tried using both DP and HDMI switches in the hopes of making the reset process easier to no avail. Only breaking physically breaking the connection (I presume breaking the electrical connection) works.

This is phase two of Apple‘s race to save the planet. If your monitor doesn’t come on it uses less electricity. Phase one was not including the power brick with an iPhone.

I remember seeing this with my 2012 mini, but maybe only a couple times. Back in post 103 EdwardC said he told his monitor to only use the port the mini was connected to, instead of scanning through the ports on wake/power up. That seems significant. I don’t suppose it helps that there are computer chips in the computer, chips in the port, chips in the cables, and chips in the monitor. It used to be just a computer chip and some wires.

I sometimes get this display issue, but a larger problem for me is the M1 constantly losing connection to my Bluetooth keyboard necessitating me to get a wired keyboard out just so I can login and reconnect the wireless keyboard. 😩

My M1 Mini wakes the display from sleep fine, but when I restart it, the display often won't turn on. I at first thought it was the computer not booting up, so I was doing a force restart. Turns out, all I had to do was unplug the display from the computer and then plug it back in. It's annoying, but it doesn't come up enough for me to worry much about it.

Every once in a while on my non-M1 Mac mini I experience this. I just turn the monitor off and then back and and viola! It has awakened. Still annoying when it happens though.

If you experience this issue, check if your monitor has something like "Deep Sleep". I disabled mine as even my custom built 2020 Windows PC was unable to wake my monitor that had deep sleep enabled sometimes.

Cause it's the steaming pile of horse crap. Easily the worst OSX edition since OSX 10.0 For a last few OS releases it's been the case that every new iteration of OSX has been slightly worse than the predecessor as in it introduced more bugs than it solved problems but Big Sur absolutely takes the cake and smashes it on the floor. Then it pisses on it.

Big Sur is what's crippling M1 machines and somehow they even managed to even cripple Intel stuff that used to work properly. I'm not optimistic how Apple will get out of this. I didn't update none of my Macs to Big Sur because I have M1 Big Sur and I could tell right away the real problem is OS which is a bug hive and to make it even worse Apple has stalled delivering timely updates and solutions. Seems like they are stuck.

I wonder how much of this is Apple's drive to clamp down on third party repairs and such. I was shocked that my hub wouldn't work after upgrading my iPad Pro to Big Sur. To have such an effect from an upgrade of the OS means they switched something at a low level on that update. 'Why' would be the biggest question. And, apparently how far the effects will leach into the operation of their own products. That's got to be an odd position to be in.

Yeah my 2014 handles both my Asus 4K and 1080p monitors with no issues at all, including waking. My 2018 Mac mini can’t seem to wake the 4K for the life of it. I have to manually hit the input button for the 4K monitor to wake up. It’s really quite frustrating that my morning routine has been reduced to a keyboard tap and power button press...

I did get a flash on the TV, but that was it. So what was it about the flash that didn't wake up the TV. Damned odd, and it's not consistent. It doesn't happen every time (thank Ford) but when it does, it's odd. Is the HDMI port not putting out a signal, not knowing what wakes up an HDMI connected display. If that's true, what causes it to just 'forget' to do it occasionally. I HATE inconsistent crap like that. I've got so many stories of clients with random stuff happening, and finding out that it was caused by a ridiculous unrelated issue. So is it a driver screw-up? A deliberate decision by Apple to alter the 'standard' way things are supposed to be done, or is it a flaky hardware design that is causing it. Maybe a timing issue that is too short occasionally? Should be easy to identify, one would think...

I have this issue often with my M1 Air that I use everyday with my Caldigit TB3 dock. It works about 90% of the time, the other 10% it will "wake" the display for a half second, before it turns off and nothing will happen. I found my best bet is to open the display on the Air, unplug, then replug the dock, then close the lid (I'm using it in clamshell mode.)

I thought it was some dock/monitor incompatibility issue...but I guess not.

Mine too this afternoon. It's done it a couple times in the past month that I've had it. I've never had issues with earlier Minis I've had. I wonder if it's Big Sur?

I also had an incident, with a different headless Mini that is the same vintage, ironically, as this 'new' one, where I was trying to remote in to the Mini, and could not get it to recognize the remote software keyboard. I had mouse movement, but not the keyboard. So bizarre... I reconnected a second time, and it worked. It might be unrelated, but it was so weird. I'd expect to have no *anything*, but having just the mouse work? Hmm. Interesting new feature.

For the amount of money they want for their hardware, things should "just work"!

They control the hardware and the software both.

Just Fix It, Apple!

I have the same setup - only with a MBPro... Same issues as you.
