I sometimes briefly get the white rectangles at Apple logo startup or the pink rectangles briefly at login screen, but I haven't had a sleep issue waking my Acer 23" 3 input (VGA/HDMI/DVI) display.

I bought a newer monitor (dell), and the problem went away. Oddly enough it never happened on the built-in HDMI port, if I remember correctly.

My 2018 intel Mac mini has trouble waking my Asus 28” 4K monitor, so I wonder if this is actually an issue with the M1’s. I frequently have to manually wake my 4K monitor.

Mine too this afternoon. It's done it a couple times in the past month that I've had it. I've never had issues with earlier Minis I've had. I wonder if it's Big Sur?
Yeah my 2014 handles both my Asus 4K and 1080p monitors with no issues at all, including waking. My 2018 Mac mini can’t seem to wake the 4K for the life of it. I have to manually hit the input button for the 4K monitor to wake up. It’s really quite frustrating that my morning routine has been reduced to a keyboard tap and power button press...

Happened all the time with my 2014 and 2018 Mac Mini but disappeared with my M1 Mini. I thought the problem was finally resolved but apparently I've been lucky.

This happens to my partners M1 Macbook Pro when connected to a secondary display via an HP G2 thunderbolt dock. It actually requires her to restart the machine to work.

I'm hoping for a software fix sooner or later.

Thanks, Macrumors, for giving this issue more attention! The display problems on my M1 Mac mini have been plaguing me for months (as reported both to Apple and to these forums).

Since upgrading to Big Sur, I’ve been having the same issue with my 2017 15” MBP and an LG Ultrafine 5K.

I wonder whether it’s a Big Sur issue, rather than an M1 issue, and if there’s a false correlation caused by the issue being more glaringly apparent for new M1 Mac Mini owners because they (a) *have* to use an external monitor and (b) have been using older OS’s until now…?

Same for me.
Problems with my 2018 Mac mini on my LG UK650. And finally with the M1 Mac mini it’s working without any problems.

Same issue here with my M1 MacBook Pro connected to a CalDigit TS3 Plus, monitor connected via DP. Waking from a short sleep works fine but if the MacBook was sleeping for a longer time I have to unplug the CalDigit TS3 Plus and plug it in again in order to wake the screen. If I attach the screen with a USB-C dongle to the MacBook this does not happen.

Another issue is that the screen is waking up from standby mode every minute when the MacBook is sleeping. It will turn on with a black screen and no signal message, then go back to sleep again.

I have a bug report open with Apple about these issues but no response from them. Not even a count of similar reports despite others having reported the same. Looks like Apple haven't started looking into this issue yet despite it being around since day one. Really annoying!

In my case if I put it on sleep manually, it wakes up automatically within a second, as in it won’t go into sleep mode.

When it goes in sleep automatically instead I randomly get one of the three following outcomes:
1. Kernel panic
2. Display does not wake up
3. Wakes up normally if I wake it up within less than a couple of hours from the sleep moment.

edit: I have one full hd montior connected via HDMI and one 4K monitor connected via OWC thunderbolt dock.

I blame the HDCP handshakes here, there's very few good implementations.

I have horrendous time with different devices not doing this, not just macs, and not just on monitors. The PS4 pro was awful with samsung TVs for example. My LG monitor more consistantly wakes up from my m1 mac ( every time), compared to my HP Desktop (about 75% of the time) that are both plugged in to it.

The same happens with my 2018 Mini with Catalina. It's not a M1-only issue!
My Mini (2011, Intel) already has this problem. It's connected to a SAMSUNG TV via HDMI. Many times I have to press-hold power to shutdown and reboot.

To summarize: the TV needs to be on by the time the Apple logo appears (boot progress indicator). Otherwise it's reboot. Sometimes, connecting with ARD will connect the TV display.

Me thinks the bug is twofold: the TV does handshake the resolution only right after started up; and not later. And OSX does not record or store a default resolution; always requires a handshake. This is a famous issue, with VGA adapters in meeting rooms (my MBP at work). Result, the mini is turned on, but the TV shows "no signal on HDMI1-PC" (cable: HDMI->HDMI).

One more thing: did anyone try to set the resolution manually to the native one by clicking “option”+scaling in the monitor tab under system preferences? I did not have issues for two days straight with that setup, however I normally I scale the 4K monitor res slightly down, so it is not a final solution for me.

I've had this problem for years with my 2018 mac mini, on anything connected to the HDMI port. Both the 2018 and M1 mac mini use the same MegaChips MCDP2920A4 DisplayPort 1.4 to HDMI 2.0 converter chip inside.
Same here. I thought it was just me and my Dell monitors!!!

I had this BT problem on one mini which I returned, not on the other one. So it may well be HW related as well.

My Late 2012 model has had the same issue forever, including the pink hue. Seems to happen mostly when the display is turned off and I connect to it via VNC. It has become less frequent with the new Yamaha receiver though.
