I forgot about that problem. I had that issue with my 2012 MBP and external display a couple of years ago as well. But I resolved it somehow with the energy settings and maybe disabling some background app of some kind. I wish I remembered how so I could share.
Perhaps the "wake for network access" option? Haven't tried that one, let's see if it makes any difference.

Some customers who have purchased an M1 Mac mini have been experiencing an issue that causes the machine not to wake a connected third-party display from sleep.

m1-mac-mini-vignette.jpg-feature.jpg

This is not an issue that's affecting all M1 Mac mini owners, but there are numerous complaints on the MacRumors forums and the Apple Support Communities dating back to November when the Mac mini was first released. MacRumors reader gooimac explains:MacRumors reader Mike, who emailed us about the issue, has seen the same problems. This issue appears to be affecting a wide range of displays that connect over Thunderbolt, HDMI, and DisplayPort adapters, but there are also plenty of people who are having no issues at all.

It's not clear what the problem is, but Apple has been looking into one M1 Mac mini display issue that causes strange pink squares to appear on displays connected to one of the machines.

Apple is aware of the issue, and there could be a fix in the works that's coming in a future update. One solution for now may be to disable the feature that puts the Mac mini to sleep, but that's not ideal. The other solution is to unplug and replug in a display that's not responding after a Mac mini wakes from sleep, but that too is an inelegant solution. There appears to be no other fix available at this time.

Yep. I for sure have this problem... I have to unplug and plug the monitor in sometimes. Or if I wait 10 seconds it comes on... sometimes...

Not sure if a coincidence but in my case the pink squares issue goes together with the power issue, on every occasion that i got the pink squares on my main monitor the secondary monitor did not power-up at startup and required replugging.

Another glitch i've noticed is that rarely one or both monitors will lose power for second while dragging a window from one to another.

I haven't had this particular issue, but I have had a lot of connectivity issues with a Dell monitor on my Mac Mini M1. It flickers on and off constantly. It is unusable. And it doesn’t matter how I connect it, whether it be the HDMI output, or via USB-C adapter. No other computer has an issue with that same monitor using the same cables.

My brother has the “refuses to wake” issue on a 2016 MacBook Pro. It isn’t just the M1s.

I just bought a MacBook Air M1 and Ultrafine 4k display yesterday because I got tired of waiting for the new iMacs. I love this display, but I'm having the problem described here. Regardless of whether I put it to sleep manually or it sleeps on its own, it will not wake up the display. I have to open and close the lid. Every. Single. Time.

Setting it to not sleep isn't an acceptable solution for me, so I'll probably just have to return it and continue waiting for the new iMac.

It happens to me on my Intel MBP... as well as my work Lenovo T480. Common item in between is a Caldigit TS3 Plus. Maybe it's just my dock. It's annoying to open and close the lids... sometimes they don't shut off the laptop screen and I only realize when something opens up into a black hole, nowhere to be found.

Has it been confirmed that two Apple displays don’t have this problem? :)
I have no idea, I just saw them use the expression 'third party displays', and thought well there is only one 'first party display' out there!

I would dearly hope for the price of that monitor that it 'just works'!

This a very old Mac mini issue. I've complained for many years now that my Mac mini 2012 has had an issue of not being able to wake the monitor. This is a PITA whenever I need to start or restart the mini, and that includes for all updates. Apple has never addressed this issue, at least not satisfactorily. Check out the forums and you will see how many people have had this issue over the years.

The best work around I’ve found is to start moving the mouse and continue to move it constantly during the restart process until the screen shows a status message. Don't stop moving the mouse or the monitor will state it is going into sleep mode and whatever process is occurring then stops. A simple security update can take 30-45 minutes to complete due to the mini falling into sleep mode several times, causing many manual shutdowns and manual restarts.

I had the same problem, and a few other issues, and Apple Support had not received sufficient training to comment on my gripes. I was very disappointed, as the machine itself is brilliant and fast, so I was wanting too keep it for years. Now, I'll wait until the M1X Mac Mini comes out which I hope will be this year, and I hope won't be more than £1500. Meanwhile, I'm stuck trying to edit in FCPX with a 2009 Mac Pro!

I hope they have an update quick for it.

LOL 😆

My experience with Apple is niggling problems like this get ignored and corrected by chance during major hardware or OS updates. I had a lingering problem with USB drives on a mac mini needing to be unplugged and reinserted after sleeping to be recognized. That went on for years. Then I upgraded to Big Sur and the problem went away.

Show stopper problems get a quick fix. Annoying problems linger until the responsible component gets replaced.

Actually I think the Intel Mac Mini does the same over TB/Display Port,
only on HDMI it works reliably.
Mine is the opposite. The 2018 Mac mini will not wake my Asus 4k 28" monitor reliably through the HDMI port. My 1080p HP monitor wakes every time with no issue with my USB-C to HDMI adapter. Haven't tried switching them yet, but I think the mini doesn't like my specific monitor.

If my Mini M1 goes into sleep mode, my USB wired Apple keyboard stops working. Bizarrely, if I unplug it and replug it through a USB cable extender, it starts working. I really can’t figure out what’s going on here as just unplugging it and replugging it doesn’t work, and the issue will persist through a restart as well. The extender cable seems to prevent this happening.

This is affecting Apple displays as well, i have a Thunderbolt and LED Cinema and they both glitch from time to time.

I see this with 2018 Mac mini's running Big Sur as well (including up to 11.3b4, its better than it used to be in earlier 11 versions, but still sometimes happens)

oh, and I don't have the entire computer sleeping, just displays and this still happens.

Yes - it seems this is not very reproducible. To make matters worse, I bought the Mac Mini for my mum, which is above 80 and I was getting some heat for the unreliable monitor connection.

Looks like these monitor issues - are really a problem and not restricted to M1 Minis.
If you want a M1 exclusive bug - that is the keyboard/mouse lag over usb.
Luckily my M1 Mini is headless, so I couldn‘t care less - but it drove me mad, while setting it up.

Thank you to whoever was responsible for getting this article written!
If you have an Apple Support ticket open for this issue, it may be helpful to send a link to this article to the contact email you were provided for your ticket.
I just did this for a ticket I have open for my M1 Mac Mini not waking a Dell U2713H monitor correctly. One can only hope :)

I’m guessing whether or not you have this issue depends on which display you have, not which model Mac you have.
There are a million factors. Biggest ones are HDMI vs DP and the cable you're using. It's so hard to even blame this on M1 given how many things can go wrong, but regardless this is why I don't buy any first-gen of a product.

I have had issues like these with my 2012 Mac Mini for years. After several attempts of a fix with Apple, I gave up and just dealt with it. Fortunately it only happens every couple weeks at total random. Sometimes a quick unplug of the video cable and plug back in fixes it, other times I have to try several different things, including physically unplugging the monitor for several seconds, before it works again. I've tried literally everything short of buying brand new monitors.

It isn't just sleep/wake for me. I get the pink squares sometimes & most annoying is that if I sleep my M1 Mini and turn off my monitors and wake it up, it resets the display arrangement setting and causes it to shift the menu bar and main screen (and ALL windows I had separated on each monitor) and puts them on my secondary monitor.

Super annoying.
