Story of my (Mac) life... it won't change now. The App Store pisses off every publisher (see Epic), Steam is working on its console (don't need Apple). Nobody needs Apple for Gaming. It's a bitter truth. Some examples:
the NVidia feud. AMD gfx working with thunderbolt and MacOS but getting an error in bootcamp, then trying geforce via thunderbolt not working on macos, but perfectly in bootcamp. wtf Apple? Also Apple dropping eGPU support for m1, dropping 32 bit support even before thus making all my games purchases unplayable and they are deprecating OpenGL too...
Yes, I love Apple for what they do, but I hate it for Games.
im just going to get the top-spec 2020 iMac and use that for a few years as i need an iMac for work and don't have room for an iMac plus another monitor. Now if the iMac had an HDMI port i wouldn't be in this situation!

Pointless arguing that this means AAA games should come to the Mac. This power only exists on the top end MacBook Pro. The regular M1 (which most people will likely get) only has 2.4 TF via this calculation. By the time we get to M3/M4 perhaps the entry level chip will offer ~10 TF but until then I don't think there's going to be much demand for a $3k device to play games on.

The problem is that there are no real AAA games on the Mac. We want to see games like COD modern warfare, red dead redemption 2 and cyber punk etc run on these M1 Pro chips.

Even if it could run on the MacBooks, it’s won’t run well, because that 10.4TF at 60W is probably equal to 4-5TF.

10.4TF is the case you can actually use all the transistors, but that would be around 200W range.

that's crazy; hopefully apple buck the trend and deliver some good drivers to go with all the horsepower those out of context lines on a graph apparently mean

Great, lets all pray for a similar-specs in next Mac Mini. Sorry, but I can't buy machines with serious/ridiculous design flows. I proved so right with touchbar macbooks which never bought, I believe I'm right again.

Let me guess - you don't think the design flaw is that it looks like a MacBook Pro from 2009, or that it's got feet, or a stupid HDMI port. You think the design flaw is the notch don't you.

That’s very useful comparison especially in the light that there are not that many games you can play in a MacBook 😏

10.4TF is quite a bit lower than a PS5...

Either way a very expensive and powerful PC doesnt come close to a PS5 in actual practice. Will be interesting to see how these M1 do!

I bought a $4,000 2019 MBP with a Vega 20. It plays Elder Scrolls Online WORSE than a friend's 2020 with integrated graphics. It hitches every few seconds like it's texture thrashing. It doesn't matter how much "power" they put in the chip if the industry doesn't optimize games for it. Bethesda has already said they won't support Apple silicon, and I imagine that a lot of other top-tier companies feel the same way. I will never look to do anything other than casual gaming on future Macs, and won't waste the money on upgrading them to try to do so again. Unless a miracle occurs, it's just never going to happen.

Macs have never been known to be the platform of choice for game developers. It's been this way for decades. But Macs are no longer as niche as they used to be 10-20 years ago and today, they certainly have the power to run top tier games. Why is it that there are still so few games for Macs today?

Apple is all about efficiency, and has more graphics performance than PS5 while supporting far less games.

Sony has more games per watt than Apple. Apple needs to work to woo developers to bring their AAA games to macOS.
they are offering the performance and the hardware...the rest is up to the developers
These days are so easy to convert an x86 to arm architecture that , a big company can make it in under 2 months

I'm seeing a lot of posts about the lack of MacOS games to take advantage of the new GPUs. Sure, I agree. But you're overlooking the other major benefit of the GPU - acceleration for content-creation tasks. Those represent some of the most computation-intensive tasks for common workloads and the M1 Max will elevate portable performance to obscene levels for those roles.

I’m no pc person or a technical person but a quick Google shows the laptop rtx 3080 to be 18TF which is the one they are comparing the M1 Max to so how does this work exactly?
it depends...in razerthe 3080 dgpu is around 100W and in the MSI is around 160W
This is between those cards/performance
So its on par with the 3080 razer dGpu

i hope somebody, an windows user will come and tell us that is still under desktop nvidia 3090 gpu or

Radeon RX 6900 XT
Look, the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max are really impressive but the fact of the matter is if you want to play AAA titles it’s not going to be on the Mac. And i’m not trying to throw shade, it’s reality.

Now as far as your price example, here’s one. I purchased an HP Omen 30L directly from Amazon for $1999.99 and it has the following specs. i9-10850K, 32GB of Ram, 1TB Nvme, Wifi 6, RTX 3080. I can play the latest games in 4K pushing 60FPS.

The problem with the Mac is the same Linux has wrt Games. Who is willing to spend time writing the games to run on a Mac? Game Publishers are budget constrained and in order to recoup their enormous investments, they have to target the biggest audience and that’s the PC crowd.

It’s no different with the consoles. Publishers and developers may target a specific console because of the user base. So regarding the Mac, it’s not about specs but rather user base and who wants to invest in making the game run on the M1 series chips. It did not happen when Apple was using Intel chips so it’s highly doubtful things will change with the M chips.

That said, i’m very impressed with what Apple has pulled off.

It’s not just about ARM it’s also the way the operating system functions, its libraries, it’s APIs, it’s kernel, the way unified memory works, metal vs OpenGL/direct3d/Vulkan.

If Apple wants to woo developers then it needs to dedicate staff resources to announce unreal engine 5 support (for example) and then announce it in the keynote for example. Microsoft put in the work back in the 90s and 00s with direct3d. Apple needs to do the same in an robust, unleashed manner.
