I'm in the Boston area. I already have a Pro but and like to keep up with availability in case I want to get a Max as well and use the Pro as a desktop.
I don't like sales taxes.
Boston folks clean out our stores in NH quickly because they don't have to pay sales taxes if they buy them up here.
New stock is showing up for the configuration I am looking for (14"/64/2TB) I see it available TODAY in Space Gray at the following Apple Stores:
Summit Mall (Akron, OH)
Potomac Town Center (Woodbridge, VA)
Georgetown (Washington DC)
Bethesda Row (Bethesda, MD)
None in the Pittsburgh area yet today...hopefully later today. But this definitely proves that M1 Max in custom configurations are still shipping to stores!

I wonder if these are new returns - that is returns where the outer box has not been opened.
Doubtful, I have now seen another 4-5 stores get that model in. This is just showing up as they're getting their daily deliveries. Still waiting for any of the Pittsburgh stores to show some stock....
Apple customer behavior is opposite from most consumer behavior. People buy the most expensive model.
This is why a bunch of us camped out on The Apple Store and rushed to get our orders in through all of the chaos. I was thinking that I should have ordered two of them and maybe I should have. My son's workplace is ordering one for him today. I don't think that he'll see it until mid-December because it's an oddball configuration.

That’s where I am. Been searching multiple times daily…NOTHING. I’ve searched around the country just out of curiosity and have never found one.
I had one ordered with Apple minutes after the keynote. Then the wife convinced me to order with Costco. They’ve screwed me over and can’t fill my order, though people who’ve placed orders after me are getting theirs filled (same exact build) and delivered. Thanks Costco!

The Apple Store has physical stores and an online store.
But people do camp out at the Physical Store for some products. I've certainly done it myself. Got a nice Grand Opening Apple Tee-Shirt out of it too.
I was able to get my 14" Max finally! Ordered for pickup today the 14"/32GPU/64GB/2TB I can't wait to go get it!

I was on the phone with Costco inquiring about my order. She told me she was sorry, but they have no delivery date. Don't know when it might ship. Right before we ended the conversation I got an alert from UPS that my order had shipped. It will be here tomorrow. 16" Max.
Did they offer you a free Hot Dog and Pizza? We shop at Costco but their approach to computer sales is a table with computers that you can't log into or do anything with.
Heads up for anyone in Texas who is still looking - the 16" M1 Max 1TB models have been popping up over the past couple of hours. They do sell quick though so I would suggest to act fast if you see them in stock. I am using the inventory script checker tool I found over on reddit which helped managed to snag one. Going to pick it up tonight!
I picked up my 14” M1 Max at the Houston Apple Store last weekend - had to make the drive from Austin. Funny thing is that I live like 5 minutes from the local Apple Store here lol. But at least I didn’t have to wait 6-8 weeks for it.
