My hunch is that Apple estimates that the Venn diagram of customers who want a big 5K+ display overlaps signficantly with customers who need faster Macs -- and who are interested in updating their CPU separately from their display.

As much as I like my iMac M1 and appreciate the simplicity of the design, I do recognize that the separated CPU model gives me a ton more flexibility and a cleaner upgrade path. I can pair an Apple Studio Display (or any other) with any other computer Apple sells, from a MacBook Air to a Mac Pro, and I can switch horses at any point if my needs change.

"We discover that the Mac mini and Mac Studio grab just 1% of the Mac market share each."

This echos the sentiment many have here and clearly we are speaking with our wallets, NO INTEREST AT ALL in the Studio and a Mini combo. Based on sales numbers that Venn diagram is completely off.

If (if) this third-party research firm is to be believed, what you're saying is that the iMac that's shipping now is popular. That says absolutely nothing about a theoretical iMac 5K. All speculation.

In any case, I'm going to assume Apple, who has the actual sales figures, has done some kind of product planning and has their reasons -- whatever they are.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter at all. What they sell is what we get to choose from ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Checked my local apple store for pickup and all imac 3 imac configs/macbooks 14/16 are instock. Not the immediate rush from previous gens
Where did you find this info? I checked my local store's site and there was no information that I could find regarding specific availability of models. Did you have to go through the ordering process first?

Went to check out the new 16" Pro at a store...

what a crap deal. I was hopping for 27 size, but this is just sad. Why get iMac when you get much better mac laptop for the price. :(
For that price the best you'll get is a 15" M2 Air. The only thing "better" about that Air is that it's portable.

No sign of ship times for me. Here is what I see in the store right now:

Just picked up a 16 core 40 GPU M3 Max at my local Apple Store in Germany. To my surprise they had some in stock. Got it in space black 😎
I would just ask that, if it is possible to find some MacbookPro Max in stores over the weekend. I'll be at the USA and wanted to buy one. Will check the stores! Thanks!

Thanks! Looks like base models are in stock where I am, but I tried up-speccing a model and that wouldn’t be available for pickup for a few weeks. I only tried one model though, so other Macs may be available sooner.

Why is the Max not available at launch. Anyone have a technical explanation?
Because Apple was not ready to launch the chips but when finance told them the Mac had a 34% drop last quarter, PR said they needed to release something STAT.

Then explain why some are coming preloaded with Ventura pointing to them being stockpiled for some time like a delayed release would be? How does that point to a rushed release?

Them shipping with 13 is actually a huge red flag that they weren’t sitting around.

Because they were in dev on a very late version of 13. You’re not going to be testing new hardware and developing firmware for a product on beta versions of 14.

14 just went prod 1 month ago. Assembly likely was just beginning then.

This was so rushed that they didn’t have the ability to add firmware and device support to 14.

Red flags all over this launch.

I really wish we could look back on this stuff and see what actually happened. There has to be an interesting story inside apple about why they made this thing. If they were truly planning to replace the 13-inch Touch Bar MacBook Pro, they would have planned it further in advance. But if it were just to use up extra chips (they bought TSMC's entire 3nm process for 2 years, so they want to get everything they can out of it), they would not have put it in their most popular model. They would have shoved it in the Mac mini or another lower-volume device. Maybe the iPad Pro.

If you select a config of the imac/macbook and click the 'pick up, instore at ... you can select a store by zip/postcode. Could be that this relies on location enabled in the browser to work

Yes when I do that based on the model, I get November 25-December 1st. I have to put it in the bag to see the date though. Seems broken...

Edit: Now it is working. Maybe the website was overloaded.

How black is it in person?
Not very black. In indoor room light (overhead daylight white balanced LED Flood lights) it’s a very, very dark gray, not what I consider “black”.

However, the thing that I noticed more than anything is that it seems darker (more black like) on the inside, especially the keyboard. The keyboard has a different feel to the keys as well. Much nicer and smoother to type on than any Mac I’ve used before. I’ve used many. Just a short list of my M series Macs. M1, M2 and now M3 MBP Max 16. An M1 MBP PRO 14. This keyboard feels much nicer to use and better built than all of those others. Hard to explain, but it definitely feels different and better.

this shall be one of the last great macs... since it's blantantly obvious Apple's sales is going off the cliff... iPhone 15 was a disaster, and they released so many macs in the same freaking year... you knew that it's their tactics trying to salvage something... here comes the dirt cheap low specs Mac just like the windows and chrome books...
The problem is not the number of models, the problem is the value for money for machines with overkill performance, underkill SSD/RAM specs, and utter p*ss take RAM/SSD upgrade prices in order to make the machines useable, when all the previous generation M1+ machines already had overkill performance. All this in a shrinking economy, with stagnant wages, rising costs, and rising interest rates.

If Apple wants to move these machines, they need to cut their margins.

They could also stop playing the games of drip feeding spec bumps for all the little extras, and just make them the best machines they can, rather than saving features for future releases.
