The Mac mini is a great entry point for Mac, so I really hope they don't bork this up by removing ports and upping the price. Education use these, so Ethernet is a must. Don't remove it unless you buy an extra accessory like you did on the iMac. Plus it definitely needs more than 2 USB-C ports.

I don't care about the size, it's a desktop computer for crying out loud.

Just make sure about the following:
1: it's more or less noiseless during audio and video work
2: expand the RAM possibilities for the M4 Pro chip, with up to 64gb RAM - like the previous Intel Mac Mini had

Very skeptical about the smaller size, will probably lead to more fan noise. We'll see...

I would rather keep the same size, and get four USB-C/Thunderbolt ports, an Ethernet, and HDMI. It really doesn't take much space up to begin with.
I think the number of USB-C/Thunderbolt ports will be the same. Same goes for Ethernet and HDMI.

But I suspect Apple is cutting the two USB-A ports.

Would be sick if they retain all the ports despite making it as small as an Apple TV box.

Smaller case sounds reasonable. I have the M2 Pro with 5 USB-C ports. There is a lot of Air inside the form factor. I do hope though, that it's not as small as the Apple TV 4K. A reduction in ports would make me very unhappy.

Ok for smaller as long as it keeps good connectivity (USB-A and USB-C, HDMI (at least 2x 4k support), sd-card, built-in small speaker).
Why does anyone need a USB-A port at this point? I have a couple USB-A things (which will eventually get phased out) that I plug into my M1 iMac, and I just use a couple adapters. They sit on the end of the cable and I never even have to see them.

Which means my tiny computer needs a hub anyway, regardless of whether it's USB-C or (unfortunately) still USB-A stuff. Disappointing.

The current Mac mini has a lot of wasted space already, if you look at the insides it is very empty.
Doesn't the fan in the M2 Pro Mac Mini ramp up during heavy tasks? I'd rather have Apple putting in a larger heatsink and fan, to ensure a more or less noiseless operation. I dunno about this one. These M-chips tend to get more and more power hungry, from the original version (M1). This could end up being a very hot and noisy Mac Mini version.

Having more ports and the ability to order more RAM (up to 64gb like the previous model), would be much more useful in "real life".

A slightly smaller model would be fine, but this sounds like Apple is going too far in the thinner/smaller direction.

Add a display, mouse, keyboard and trackpad and the Mini is almost the cost of MacBook Air.
Agreed, sort of. My current PC is and AIO, so I'd need a new display like a basic 24 inch HD.
I'm still using a 2008 mouse and a 2010 keyboard, both USB.
I'm cheap like a Windows guy.
Also a strong believer in refurbished with Apple. No, I'd be shooting myself in the foot to track down the 2018 Intel mini. M1 would suit me fine though.

I hope fanless, this is evolution for me.
Well yes, I agree, as I hate the fan that spins up on my current iMac when I push it and I push it a lot.

However the smaller format makes me think they aren't too worried about heat which possibly means lower performance that they could have given it had they included a decent, quiet, fan in it.

That's part of why I'd prefer a Studio. I don't care how large it is as long as I can get max performance from it.
One of the advantages the Studio has over the mini is better cooling for improved performance.
The other advantages are more memory (I need 50G+). Not too fussed about graphics.

A mini-mini would put clear day light between the Mini and Studio but only if the Studio gets an update at the same time. Current high end mini has a blurred line between it and the low end Studio (see reviews).

Im guessing it will be like Apple TV where the cheap model is wifi only and less ports while the expensive model has all ports and more storage
