What a shameless naming scheme. Naturally, with all the talk about quantum computing, Apple has to be the first to apply 'quantum' to another of their markering terms for ordinary tech.
Except that Apple didn’t come up with the name.

I agree, there is little family resemblance between "quantum dot" and "quantum computing". "Quantum" just means something very very small. You wouldn't accuse of Schrödinger or Heisenberg of shameless appropriation when they named their theory of particle interactions Quantum Mechanics.
I'm intrigued, is this something I could be furious about as well?I am kind of surprised, it went on for a while. Somehow this was the last straw I guess!
New, do you mean M4's, or new in this chassis? (so from M1 to M4)The new MacBook Pro displays also use PWM (pulse-width modulation), even at 100% brightness. Embarrassing.
Almost everyone is affected the only difference is how long your eyes tolerate it. PWM screens tire the eyes faster. He's an extreme case whose eyes tire the fastest with PWM, but I recommend doing an experiment. If you have access to Air (no PWM), work one day 8h on Pro and then a whole day 8h on Air.It's really just the one poster. Check the post history. It's a personal crusade.
I feel for the (dozens of us! (not me though)) that are affected, but I doubt posting so much about it here is going to change the global supply chain realities Cook and co are considering.
Imagine all that outrage of people "I cannot see the difference!!!"I wonder why Apple didn’t advertise this improvement
What else can you expect when most “reviewers and testers” and the like only read off Apples spec sheets. It took almost a whole week since release to find this out???
Imagine upgrading from another M MBP and wondering what the hell is wrong with your eyes all of a sudden. The new MacBook Pro displays also use PWM (pulse-width modulation), even at 100% brightness. Embarrassing.
Because you need M4 to let the sensor be able to calculate whether you are outside or not. M1 isnt powerful enough to do this. The last part isn’t true it’s not up to 1000nits from 600nits, it’s only 1000 nits when on auto brightness and outside in bright light, in door or with auto brightness off it’s the same 600nits max brightness and there’s no new tech it’s a software unlock. Apps like vivid let my M1 Max use full 1000nits all the time even indoors and without auto brightness on. All they have done it removed some software locks. It’s not because of new hardware at all. The old m1 MacBooks can go full brightness so why say it’s a new feature. Just let the m1 MacBooks and newer go full 1000nits all the time without 3rd party apps or each year they will improve it and say it’s another new feature when it’s not
One thing I’m learning is, the longer you keep your Apple stuff, the better your options are down the road. Last year I decided I wouldn’t get anything less than an iPhone 15 Pro, after my 11 Pro served me well.Damnit just keep making me want one even more. The MacBook Pro M1 Pro I'm typing this on is perfectly fine!
But...mmmm those new ones look good!
If there's one thing I've learned about Apple, it's that there are "seasons" to "pick".
This is the season.
"Hello, my name is X, and this is Macbook Cinebench and Geekbench test"What else can you expect when most “reviewers and testers” and the like only read off Apples spec sheets.
Would argue base iterations are keeping their value quite well, whereas the upgraded ones would drop a bit more. "Shifts in paradigms" changes that picture somewhat, but sellers seems to pretend that isn`t the reality. Would argue there will be a split between iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro/iPhone16. For Mac Minis, there are 2 notable splits. Intels, M1/M2 and M4.One thing I’m learning is, the longer you keep your Apple stuff, the better your options are down the road. Last year I decided I wouldn’t get anything less than an iPhone 15 Pro, after my 11 Pro served me well.
This year I decided I wouldn’t get anything prior to the M4 MBP, should my 2017 MBP die in the next few years. Looking at what’s “possible nowadays” (2017 was a strange year) makes it worth while holding out while waiting for innovation and user feedback to do their thing.
An used M4 is probably priced Ok two years from now on![]()
Agree. I've still got my M1 MBP Pro (which I plan on selling) and when I switch between my M4 and the M1 there is a noticeable difference (granted I also have the nano texture display on the M4). overall this M4 screen seems superb.I KNEW this screen looked different compared to my old M1 Max. I thought it was just my imagination or the new tech honeymoon phase. Glad to see my eyes aren’t playing tricks on me. The difference is slight but it’s definitely there. Everything looks a touch richer especially when working with DCI-P3 content.
M4 lineup continues to prove itself as the best laptop for creators.
It is curious that's for sure.I wonder why Apple didn’t advertise this improvement
They would then be tied to a single producer as Samsung Display own the patents (and likely the trade secrets) on how to produce QD colour filter displays. They could mix the 2 technologies. My Samsung S95C TV is an OLED with a layer of Quantum Dots and the color is absolutely amazing!
It is strange. Was looking at them in the Apple Store and thought they looked better than ever. Now I know why. Wonder why Apple didn’t mention this. Weird.
It didn’t move it’s always been 1000nits but it’s software locked use apps like vivid and unlock itThat’s why they moved from 600 nits to 1000! But still the design is getting old!
to me, all MacBook Pro displays since at least the M series have led to bad eyestrain within minutes of use, and an inability to focus properly, especially on text. It looks like everything is under water, text is blurry and seems to float around
You've taken my money already. Now just tell me how to calibrate it for on the go photo editing.
