M4 Max Studio - preparing to ship, yay!

They allowed this during pre-order but turned it off on Monday. However, if you order and it ships FedEx you can use the FedEx app to have it delivered to FedEx office. Similarly if it ships UPS and you have UPS Choice you can have it delivered to a UPS store. If you don't have Choice there is a fee unless UPS has already made 1 delivery attempt. However, if you call Apple Customer Service and explain your situation they'll probably be able to change to UPS Store delivery w/ no fee.

It is odd they turned off store delivery. I don't know the logistics here but it's not like CTO Studios or even Airs are flying off the shelf like an iPhone. CTO delivery itself isn't even all that backed up except for some of high end options.

I did notice it turned off for launch day. Still turned off as of today too. I would expect it to work over the coming weeks. I live near a tax free state so I have to do order pick up for there and not deliver for my home state.

FYI my March 5 ship to store CTO (M4 Max 16/40 core/48GB/1TB) order arrived today. Original estimate was 3/17. So looks like Apple is definitely shipping these out much faster than advertised.

I thought I saw some on here say they can upgrade the standard delivery to expedited for free? How does one do that?

Call customer service and ask, but it's 100% at their discretion and not automatic. Also, if you are ordering a CTO Studio they are coming direct from China right now so they are already shipped express (thought that is not necessarily next or 2day service from when shipped, 3 day is probably average). Apple has warehouses in key locations that are no more than 2 delivery days away from most major cities. If you live in a rural area that is when express makes the biggest difference.

Nice!

Any noise/coil whine or the like?
No coil whine. I could absolutely hear a high pitched noise that my old Mac Mini did not make, and it was annoying me yesterday. After a few minutes of trying to figure out if it was coil whine, when I got closer to the Mac Studio I realized the fan noise did not bother me and the high pitched noise got quieter.

As it turns out, the noise was actually coming from the USB-C Magic Keyboard with TouchID that I bought with the Mac Studio. I had always left my keyboard plugged in because I have no reason to use it wirelessly. It turns out that when this new keyboard is plugged in directly to the Studio with the included USB-C cable, the keyboard itself makes an annoying high pitched noise. Unplugging the keyboard makes the noise go away. Googling the problem brought me to a thread here on MacRumors from December where someone noticed the same thing. So the Mac itself is fine. Plugging the keyboard back in, the noise didn't come back right away.

Has anyone here been able to do a CTO order and pick up in store? I'd rather not have a very expensive small box sitting outside my building while I'm away at work but as soon as I customize the machine it removes the store pickup option.

FYI CTO Store Pickup was turned on this morning.

I do see it showing an estimated date now, but as I try to complete checkout I get an error:

That's so odd. I don't get why it's so hard for Apple to ship to the store rather than a home or office. When I got notice yesterday that my CTO was ready it just said come pick up at my convenience anytime in the next 7 days. No appointment was needed or even given as an option.

I ordered the M3Ultra/256GB/4TB on March 8th. Still in processing status. Apple says delivery Mar 19-21.
My Studio order switched to Preparing to Ship overnight. Hoping I have it Wednesday or Thursday.

My Studio shipped Tuesday night, to a nearby Apple Store, with an original date of March 19th. Given how many others were arriving early, even store pickups, I was hoping I’d get it early but still no notice of arrival. M4Max 16c/64GB/1TB.

On the 13th March I ordered the Mac Studio M4 Max 16/40/16 with 64gb ram and 512gb SSD… I have a lot of external TB on a thunderbolt enclosure. I had an email yesterday telling me it’s shipped and will be with me by 20th. Quite surprised, a week from placing a custom order to receiving it!

I must of got lucky. Currently at Chek Lap Kok HK. I wasn’t expecting any movement until backend of next week really.

I don’t know why I find the word “binned” a bit comical. I know what the word means, but I mean, come on, nothing with 60 GPU cores is “binned” - it’s pretty awesome!

Hopefully yours will arrive sooner than the 17th! These dates are sounding like “before the weekend” or “after the weekend”.
I hate when reviewers use this word. Building my PC, "binned" meant I was selecting the highest scoring CPU, actually tested to have the best overclocking outcomes. In Apple land it means a CPU with a lower core count than the other that is on offer. In truth all chips are binned in order to be used appropriately and minimize yield loss. So I also find the use of the word a bit comical !

Got mine yesterday! Got everything migrated from my M2 Pro Mac mini in about three hours or so over Thunderbolt 4. So far so very, very good. Gonna put it through its paces a bit more this weekend.
I found it fast as well! Less than 1 hour using Migration Assistant over TB and most of my stuff is on external storage. Don't know exact time...I hit go, went down to eat breakfast, and it was done when I came back up. Almost zero downtime, which I appreciate in the middle of the semester!

For the first time i won't be using Migraton Assistant - I'm going to set the system up as a new. However, I have a backup of the MacBook I'm moving from, so I will move over some of my settings files - FCPX settings and preferences for example. Otherwise I intend to 'start fresh'.

I used a Time Machine backup to transfer my stuff across (a regular old USB-A HDD). Some of the apps didn’t play nice, but it wasn’t a big issue to just reinstall them and be on my way.

My M4 Max was estimated to arrive 3/19-3/21. It’s in Anchorage Ak now with a UPS delivery date of 3/17. It’ll be a good Monday!
Mine too is estimated to arrive 19/21. Just checked and it's "preparing to ship" OMG. It's been processing since the 12th.

Mine only was in “preparing for ship” for a day, I was surprised. Hopefully yours moves out of “preparing to ship” just as fast.

I found a thread on the Apple support site from a couple years ago, where a user with the same issue states they discovered it was due to using gift cards combined with In Store Pickup. Indeed I am trying to do so, I've been saving up gift cards for a while in anticipation of this purchase. If that's the issue, sigh.

After several calls with Apple over the last few days the recommendation is to go to a store and have an employee complete the purchase. A couple reps did acknowledge issues with ordering recently and other gift card related issues but no confirmation of anything.

I’m in the same boat though I didn’t order yet. I have a bunch of Apple Store credit from trading in devices in prep for the new m4 Mac Studio. What issues are you having?

I go to the online store, customize the Studio, add to bag. Go to checkout, select Store Pickup option and enter pickup person (me). At the payment step, I select my credit card, add the 8 gift cards and go to review step. All looks great there, I try to complete the purchase. It spins for a few seconds then bumps me back to the pickup/delivery step with an error message "The Delivery & Pickup Option you've chosen is no longer available for this order. Please select a new option below." Has happened both using my Apple ID and trying to checkout as a Guest.

I was told in the past to redeem the gift cards to your Apple ID and use that towards the purchase. That ‘should’ alleviate the issue.

Ive been chatting with support for about an hour (cant believe how much time I've wasted on this) and the rep said if I redeem to Apple ID it can't be used in store. There are mentions of this online, such as here:
At a loss for what to do now.
