Really? I had no problem running BG3 flawlessly on my MBP M1 Max.
At what settings? I got both 16" M1 Max and M3 Max. At a location where M3 Max gives out 55-60 fps, M1 Max gives out 40-45 fps. Coolers are almost at maximum and M3 is very hot. If you play at 1920x1080 or FSR then yes, it can be flawlessly, but it's too low resolution for me.

Do you use the HDMI port? I find that everything is moving to USB C anyway. While I loved to see it back as a port, I actually haven't used it since I got the new MBP
They have already tried to leave only USB-C ports in models until 2021, it was a bad experience. Professionals need ports like HDMI

In 2021 all my conference rooms had HDMI cables and so did my monitors. In 2024 none of my monitors or conference rooms have them They all have USB C

I don’t use the HDMI port often, but I definitely use the rest of them a lot, especially the SD card one.
Agree on the SD card port. Although I haven't used that either and was never bothered by a small SD card reader that i kept in my camera bag. But eliminating the HDMI port enables things to get thinner b/c it is the thickest of all of them. Or maybe enables more battery space.

I'd have to check. My max also has 64GB of ram.

I hope apple is eventually able to bring FaceID to the Mac. IMO a combination requiring both TouchID and FaceID to authenticate would be best.
I read the the thickness of the FaceID module in the iphone is almost as thick as the phone. So to figure out how to make it thin enough to be in the top part of a laptop would be quite the engineering feat

Unless this is the Macbook with Tandem OLED, i don't really care what camera this one has. 😅
But that one is probably in 2026.

I don't have any issue with the current size of the MBP. If they can figure out a thinner laptop without compromising on ports AND keeping the keyboard as good as the current one + without heat issues, then by all means. If not, it's totally fine to have what we have now.

SD card port is also a big one for those professionals who use it, like myself. It really has made the experience so much better with this model.

What's the benefit of this change?
Potentially a smaller notch? The current module is fairly large and has camera and two sensors in it as well as mounting hardware.

The only thing holding me from upgrading to Apple Silicon is Civ VI. As far as I know, it is still running on Rosetta II and kind of slow in the late game.

Do you have pro or max chip? Are you playing on external monitor (4k)?
M1 Pro. I have 32 GB of RAM though, which might help. I just play on the laptop monitor and haven't noticed any major slowdowns in late game. I mainly play it on my desktop running Windows (Ryzen 5900x, RTX 3070), but it looks and seems to run about the same between the two systems. It's not something I really benchmark. I just play the game with the highest graphics quality and screen resolution.

Edit: I partially take this back. I do occasionally play docked with a 4k monitor. I might play with a reduced resolution, but I’m not sure. I don’t do this a lot but when I do, it runs well without clear frame rate drops. Maybe some in late game if I’m playing with a lot of civs.

Most people want thinner portable devices. Including me.

Apple actually makes a really good portable Mac model that caters perfectly to people such as yourself! It's called "MacBook Air". And unless you are needing to play high-end games, edit more than three simultaneous streams of 8K footage, or live a life wherein each second spent waiting for rendering tasks is money lost, the current version of this product will actually completely serve your needs as it stands today!

Uh oh. I was hoping my M1 MBP would last me for 5 years but if they start neutering the device I'll have to upgrade sooner.

Same. I have an M1 13-inch MacBook Pro. I know a replacement is inevitable. But I was hoping to wait until at least the end of the current design generation before hopping on-board.

How well does Civ 6 even run on Intel? I'm guessing it blows on anything that doesn't have an AMD Radeon of some sort.
Are you finding your MBP runs hot and has a short battery life?

It will if you try to make it thinner...

Are you finding your MBP isn't fast enough?

It won't be if you try to make it thinner...

Why can't we have both?

Because physics don't work that way? Apple Silicon is amazing, but at the end of the day, they're still chips. You won't be able to have a Max chip run that thin while still being that powerful. Same with the Pro chips (albeit with more leway).

Remember when Apple put out its final 15-inch MacBook Pro and then months later it came out with a 16-inch MacBook Pro with the exact same CPU options? The latter ran much faster. Why? Added thickness. Even though, we're talking about ARM64 based Systems-on-a-Chip and not x86-64 based CPUs, it's still the exact same phenomenon.

I wonder if they could just stretch the hardware out horizontally opposed to have it thick

You can but that takes smart engineering and I’m not so sure Apple has the talent it needs to pull it off. They have chased away some good talented engineers.
Really?!?! I dunno. Seems like no one out there comes out with better engineered hardware. I agree with you on software. But on the hardware side, no one beats apple.

I dont think they'd make a pro laptop thinner if it meant compromises elsewhere. They made that mistake once.

Less is more. Thinner is More money in 2025.
Only thing gets thinner is your wallet.
It will be 1.3467ii920. mm thinner and 1.66893.4893l00 grams lighter.
Anything above 1080p camera has my vote.

I only use two Apple devices for home and on the go my iPhone pro max and my MacBook M1 Max, I welcome a much more lighter design for both.

I cannot understand why Apple reverted John IVE’s thin design, maybe it was nostalgia. I will hang onto my MacBook until Apple introduces OLED displays.

That’s ok for the MacBook Air but they need to avoid doing this for the MacBook Pro’s. I don’t want my laptop to throttle for what is essentially an ego play
