So mark was right since july ,mac mini has m6 and m5 pro and the products release to the customers late sept

He also missed the Mac Studio introduction when he predicted the Mini was incoming in his Monday report. The July report had very few specifics and shouldn’t count toward a true leak. (And people **** on him, not because he doesn’t have good sources or usually hits the mark on his predictions, it’s in how absolutely petty and childish he gets when facing an ounce of criticism over the (admittedly few) calls he misses. It’s a common trait amongst those lacking in humility.)

From my side where my work is mostly in computational biology rather than AI (hence more CPU than GPU/NPU based), I'm more interested in the decision between M5 Pro and M6. Here its less clear, and I think the slightly more powerful M5 Pro option for the mini probably wins out over the M6.
Been running the same calculation and I'm leaning towards the Mac Studio M5 Max - its not crazy more expensive that the maxxed Mini, but the M5 Max has crazy wide memory bandwidth compared to the M5 Pro.


I know I’m not exactly a power user. I’m not running engineering computations or biology stuff like someone upthread.

But who can effectively use all this computing power? Even my M4 MBP is overkill for everything. And I’m not being critical. How do these performance numbers have an impact on real world end users?

Me. Mainly for statistics purposes, I'm constantly frustrated with limits of M4 Pro. It's alot about running simulations on parallel. I dont' do big data work, but with more cores and more RAM I can do more small data simulations in parallel and that saves me time.

But I think the market they are aiming for with these new machines are people and businesses who want to run local LLMs for whatever reason

Great argument. Problem is; people keep saying this over and over again under Gurman's reports and their subsequent confirmation. If every time he reports on something you have to say "broken clock is right twice a day", maybe your clock isn't broken.
 
I think this is the first time Apple releases a new CPU line without an event since Jobs came back to Apple. correct me if i am wrong.
 
Article is misleading: the new type of cores added by the m6 vs the m5 is the middle class of cores currently called “performance”. M5 already had the “super” cores; and the m5 pro/max had the “performance” mid-tier cores (but no e-cores).

Not sure I understand people laughing at the Excel performance improvements. Excel is used in virtually all businesses and a lot of the processes run on huge Excel files that require loads of sustained single core performance. I had a MBA M2 that kept throttling after a few minutes of using 600MB+ Excel files and the move to a M4 Pro MBP - with a fan - helped a lot. It still is the case, though, that Excel is the only app that makes me wait on the M4 Pro - I will take every possible gain in single core performance for that reason, and am looking forward to getting a M6 MBP is they make one (I don't really need the multi-core grunt, the GPU power or the additional AI horsepower - just best in class single core integer performance and a good fan).
 
These tasks depend heavily on the speed of one core, and the M6's new "super cores" are designed to improve that directl

The Super cores are NOT the new cores. The performance ones are.
Apple renamed the old "performance cores" to "super cores" when Introducing M5 Pro & Max that had those new "Performance cores" supposed to be more efficient yet performant for multithreaded tasks.

Given how little details Apple gave on the super cores, I'm pretty sure they aren't really better than the M5 ones and that the multithreaded performance gains are mostly coming from the new 4 "performance cores" that the 2nm process enabled them to pack in their smallest mac chip.

I just bought a M4 Mac Mini for my dad and I am still using a M1 Macbook Air.
On a daily basis, even when using Photoshop, I don't see much difference between the 2 Mac

That's not entirely true. First of all, they share much wider decode + they have their own private 1MB cache. That's why M4, M3 are not the same in that regard. It's not simple renaming.
 
Wait a minute. This doesn’t gel with what we were hearing before about new MacBook Airs coming with M6 and new MacBook Pros coming with M6 Pro and M6 Max chips. Now they’re talking M7 which wasn’t due until late 2027 at the earliest.
The M7 is likely going to hit the market much sooner than that. Probably Spring 2027.
Obviously excited to see the benchmarks and the most relevant YouTube reviews but surely we know now that the M6 is just a 'bridge' to the forthcoming M7 (Spring?) which seems to be far more relevant in terms of Pro / Max / Ultra variants. As an M4 user I'll skip the M6 but the progress Apple is making year on year is astonishing.
This is probably one of the biggest leaps since the M1 and this speed is only going to accelerate to meet demand.

The majority of new Mac Mini users are pushing the limits of the machine and these will accelerate that further. The Mac Mini has become the go-to machine for on-device LLMs and the M4 Mac Mini, while still OK, was struggling already, especially with larger models.

M5 s-cores issue width: 10

We don’t know yet what m6 cores bring but I doubt they’d be much wider.
 
No private cache. They are different.

It seems M6 still having 10-7–6. Nothing new on that front. It looks like hybrid of M5 and M5 Pro/Ultra. Probably one of the reasons they are not building upon it, but going directly to M7.

In the same way you find my lack of trust in Gurman strange, I find your defense of him odd. Are you his mommy?

A baseball player hits a single home run in a season but is batting .126. Are they a great player? Heck no! Will they be benched and likely dropped from the team next season, yes!

Looking at the specs of the M6, most of the benefits seem to be around adding features that the M5 Pro and up chips got, such as neural accelerators in the GPU cores and these new “performance” cores.

The Pro chips won’t get those gains from features they already had, so it would probably only add whatever increment in performance or power efficiency comes from moving to 2nm by itself and the extra neural engine cores. Not enough to bump the generation when M7 is coming soon enough.

I am curious - what industry is using huge Excel sheets where Excel performance boosts matter? And why are you not using actual data science software like Tableau, Python, R, Julia, pick a language etc? Doing large business critical calculations in Excel in 2026 is crazy (that is why this is funny).

Neural accelerators was the new thing of Apple 10 GPU used in both A19 and M5. A20/M6 are still using the same GPU. A21/M7 will introduce Apple 11. The only “new” thing is the performance cores, but they was still part of the M5 family.

The naming almost makes sense with all three in one chip, but it’s still going to drive years of incorrect comparisons like this for years to come. They really needed to pick a different name rather than reuse it from a better tier they already used for years.

I wonder which of these improvements helps most with DaVinci Resolve. Obviously GPU power. But I think the improved single core processing might be important for Fusion effects.
 
Is there a site that one could use to evaluate both the current value of their mini and the value of other mini's? I have an M2 mini at home, we're about to move, I'd like to go ahead and upgrade to a newer (but not brand new) mini and sell my M2. My boss bought me a crazy high-end M4 for work several years back, its amazing, would like to get one from someone that thinks they need to upgrade every few years to the very latest.
