After Steve announces the mac app store, he announces new MBPs with no optical drive and sandy bridge.

And then I wake up.

No, you aren't dreaming, accept the Mac App Store is announced & a MacBook Pro without a Optical Drive is already on the market - it's called the 13" MacBook Air.

The 'Pro' moniker will not work if the Laptop cannot fully adopt 'Professional' use for any job.

Will I be able to use iTunes cards with the Mac App store?

Not that I don't believe Cougarcat, but has this been confirmed in writing somewhere? I have some Best Buy gift cards that I'm going to go redeem for iTunes gift cards if that is indeed the case, so I can download apps from the new store.

I could honestly care less for an app store but would much rather Apple finally roll out a way to purchase ebooks (ibooks) on computers instead of forcing me to own a mobile device in order to get ibooks.

I would certainly bet on Apple including some sort of 'iBook' app in OX Lion :) Amazon already have a Kindle app, though its admittedly very simple, so theirs nothing stopping Apple. Would be a nice feature!

I actually think you have it backwards, and this was years before Apple. Like most Apple products, they did not innovate or invent it, just made it much more intuituve and fun to use.

Yeah package management has been around for years, im actually surprised it has taken this long for Apple and Microsoft to create a store on their platforms, its such a no brainer.

What about this? http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=kcp_mac_mkt_lnd?docId=1000464931?

Yeah!
The sheer excitement of a more efficient means of getting the hipster drones to fill Apple's pockets with even more money!!

I assume they will take their percentage for every licence sold - whilst being the moral arbiter of what we can and cannot download!

Can't you people* just shut up?

Apple should just put a simple IQ filter onto the App Store, so the trolls can't even get in.

Remembering what icon/name is for which app is only relevant for specific purposes, checking updates is one of the main reasons to remember.

I'd say using the App is one of the main reasons to remember the icon/name and apps check for their own updates on Mac, but whatever, you weren't the guy I was replying to originally so you might not understand what this discussion was really about. Go re-read my original response and the post I was responding to.

Apps only check for updates when you open them (some of them), and not all of them do a great job on that. So if you want to get all your apps up to date, say, after returning from a vacation, it's much simpler to look at App Store application and see if you are up to date or not, instead of opening hundreds of apps one by one and checking if anyone pops up a "update me" window.

I hope it's clear now why App Store is a major convenience for keeping apps to date.

I use Appfresh to tell me what needs updating and it generally does a very good job of it. It will be nice having the App Store do it all for me though.

I wonder if Apple will ever do a thing where you can activate your non AS bought app on the AS, like Steam do with some games? (UT3, the humble bundles etc).. I bet they don't but it would be v nice!

Has anyone downloaded it yet?

I'm on the app store right now! It's got Angry Birds!!! SWEEET. and Flight Control HD!

hahaha. I'm excited.

It is live. I'm using it now..although it's saying there's an error with the store when I try to download something..booo.

Getting this when I try to get an app:

"We could not complete your App Store request. An unknown error occurred (100). There was an error in the App Store. Please try again later."

Hmm the apps seem a bit pricey (e.g. Angry Birds at 50% off is $5.99aud vs. $1.19 for the iPhone version) considering it's the exact same game as before just for a Mac rather than iPhone. And yes I'm an Angry Birds fan but from the developer's description, without further elaboration or an independent review, I think I can live without the "unique enhancements, not available in the mobile version".

I did download Solitaire Greatest Hits for my Mum. It'll be good to get some good/decent/cheap/free games in an easy/convenient manner. And yay it lets me use iTunes money (which you can get on sale at a discount anyway).

For those who are wondering, downloaded apps go straight to your dock... hmm... it's going to get cluttered!
