Pretty excited for this. It'll be interesting to see how it all works and what all is on there. And if it's missing some stuff I want/need, there's always Macupdate, etc.

Bring it on

Hmmm...didn't realize the App Store to be an actual app itself like iTunes is. Is that what you're saying. Just figured 10.6.6 would be needed to allow access to it. Is it an app that accesses an online market place separate from iTunes?

It is separate from itunes. It is its own application. Like iTunes (and other apps) it will be it's own separate icon on the dock/in the applications folder.

What the heck is that thing? Did Apple make a gaming console? :D

The caption with it...

1996 -- Apple Pippin

With all of Apple's recent home runs, it's sometimes easy to forget that the company isn't infallible -- everyone have their fair share of embarrassing flops, after all. And Pippin was one of Apple's.

For some inexplicable reason, Apple looked to enter the video game market in 1996, launching a collaboration with toy-maker Bandai that could play games and was also an inexpensive network computer. It was a device stuck in two minds, and as such did nothing particularly well. It was no surprise when consumers ignored Apple's device for the Nintendo 64 and the Sony PlayStation.

Does anyone know if app licenses from the Mac store will be similar to the iOS? Would be great if it worked the same way.. buy one copy for all your devices, e.g. Desktop and laptop.. I doubt it will happen this way.

Now watch that clown Ballmer copy this.

I actually think you have it backwards, and this was years before Apple. Like most Apple products, they did not innovate or invent it, just made it much more intuituve and fun to use.

2 years after Apple did this:

I find it irritating that all apps leave pref-files and folders after being uninstalled. It's also bad that some apps can be uninstalled by dragging to the trash while others have uninstallers. There are some bad things with Windows, but the add/remove programs uninstaller isn't one of them. :p

I have to wholeheartedly disagree. The Add/Remove programs is one of the things wrong with Windows. See, it doesn't matter on the Mac OS if preference files are left behind, it doesn't affect performance. On Windows, add/remove programs leaves files on the system and the Registry ends up getting clogged up with errors as usual and the system gets highly affected leaving the user no alternative but to use Registry cleaning software which is PITA. No matter which way you look at it, installing/uninstalling apps has always been much easier than anything on Windows, and Windows 7 didn't make it any better.

Unfortunately, Microsoft will most likely keep selling Office as-is. That is, they will keep selling it as a package installer (with all office apps) through their own retail channels.

The reasons are simple:
A) They don't need the distribution, people who need office already know where to get it
B) They won't need to rewrite any of their code to comply with Apple's mac app store guidelines
C) And of course, the biggie, they won't need to give apple a commission

The same goes for Adobe and their suite of products. Unfortunately for us consumers, the "software giants" will continue doing their own thing, at least for now.

I know what your saying, but they may make more money doing it the piece meal way... I know many hold-outs not using the mac versions, due to not being able to buy separately. The cost is the main factor. In the Windows world, I can pick up the office apps I need separately - and not have to pay over $500 for the Office Professional Plus (used to be ultimate). The most it would cost me is $200-$300. I think on the mac world, they could sell Word for $79 and Excel for $79 and still sell more copies of those individually than they are getting for the whole suite. Most people cannot justify the cost of a legal copy of Windows OS only for 1 or 2 applications. I still have XP just because of OneNote. And yes MS prices are bloated - especially when you can buy professional versions of the OS, and office for $10 at most colleges (provided you work there or are a student - or know someone who is either).

People would buy it that way more - ie no wasted disk space for apps they were not using. $158 for the apps I would use, verses $199 (or more) for a whole bunch of apps I would not use is easier on my wallet. If I want to comply with licensing terms, I can't use Home and Student - due to my free lance, non-profit/church work, or when I take work home to get a project finished...

Why?
2. Will be able to buy piece meal. I need home and business version of Word, Excel (no use for powerpoint nor outlook [especially since outlook no longer syncs with your iOS devices]...

Sorry, in its current state, Microsoft Office and its individual components do not comply with Apple's Mac App Store approval guidelines. I think people are going to a little surprised the restrictive offerings of the MAS (minus the games, of course).

I don't know for certain, but it should be tied to your AppleID, and I would think it might work similarly to Steam, in that your purchase is tied to your account, not just your system.

Then he has needless paranoia. There's absolutely no reason to believe Apple will move to an App store-only model. None.

There is every reason Apple did it to make buying and selling Mac software easier.

One reason Apple may go app-store only is that they'll get a 30% of every sale. However, this will be a bad business move as it will alienate the more professional users, IMO. Especially considering even xCode wouldn't meet the requirements, which is required to make the programs that go in the app store. Plus, I'm sure enough of the people who actually write those apps would be so turned off by this move, they'd leave the Mac platform and only fart apps & simple will be left.

An Apple Pippin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Bandai_Pippin

For sure, I always forget if I'm supposed to drag the app to my app folder to install it or shoot myself in the face.

Lol.

Actually it doesn't matter. You can drag it anywhere. All it does it gets the preferences from Library and keeps your data intact. The only difference however could be with file/app permissions with respect to ACL's. That's all.

Actually it seems like a lot of that conference is devoted to Apple related products. Funny considering Apple isn't there.

Could you please pass me some of that herb you're smokin?

You obviously have no clue what CES is all about. And you obviously haven't followed the news today.

The nVidia announcement looks very interesting...and the Samsung 9 Series laptop sure sounds nice. Maybe get your newscheck here but beware - little to no Apple news here.

I can't wait! I always thought installing things on Mac was unnecessarily complex.

This is the most successful troll I have seen in a LONG time. 5 pages of people flipping out, and one guy who wrote 1-2 pages (double spaced in a word processor) explaining how to install apps on a Mac. Priceless.

You sir/ma'am are amazing.

Will I be able to use iTunes cards with the Mac App store?
