My app status was just updated to "Awaiting Apple release". I'm not sure how Pcalc got through this. Or maybe they forgot they haven't released Yosemite yet. :D

Problems with post-Snow Leopard OS X versions

I want to make a video for most of these points (comparing Snow Leopard and Mavericks) but for now here's a list, in no particular order. You can also ask about specific points and I can elaborate on them if you don't have a copy of Snow Leopard to see for yourself.

  1. keyboard shortcuts for "Sort By" menu items (less ergonomic and cannot be changed on Mavericks)
  2. repeatedly pressing the shortcut for a "Sort By" menu item (toggles sorting order on Snow Leopard, does nothing on Mavericks)
  3. 2-finger swipe to scroll to the left/right inside a window (cannot do that in applications with back/forward navigation (like Safari) on Mavericks because it navigates back/forward - huge PITA if you typed something in, accidentally do this (that is, you want to scroll left/right and forgot that this gesture navigates back/forward), and then your work cannot be restored (sometimes it can be, but not always))
  4. scrollbars (low-contrast on Mavericks)
  5. pressing the power-button (delay on Mavericks which is unnecessary for my model of Mac)
  6. large images in Safari (they don't render on Mavericks)
  7. desktop picture modes: "Fill Screen", "Fit to Screen", "Stretch to Fill Screen" and "Center" (they all have the same effect on Mavericks)
  8. opening an image in Preview with the inspector visible (does not update the inspector on Mavericks - you have to close and reopen it before it will show the image information)
  9. character viewer (is EXTREMELY laggy in certain places on Mavericks and disappears when switching apps)
  10. saving or renaming existing files on the desktop (frequently loses the file's position on the grid on Mavericks)
  11. spring-loaded folders (pressing the spacebar to open a folder immediately does not work on Mavericks)
  12. restoring from sleep after a power loss (restores the entire contents of RAM from disk on Snow Leopard, some really awful "restore apps and windows" substitute on Mavericks - I don't understand how they could degrade a perfectly fine feature in this way, instead of improving it, for example, by automatically entering sleep when the system is about to lose power)
  13. resizing windows so that the right edge goes up against the edge of the screen (depending on where you click relative to the window edge when initiating the drag on Mavericks, you cannot bring the window edge all the way to the edge of the screen - annoying when there's a scrollbar and you cannot scroll by moving the cursor to the edge of the screen)
  14. Safari downloads (modification dates are set to "Tuesday, 24 January 1984 08:00" on Mavericks)
  15. keyboard-scrolling in Finder (randomly scrolls further than the selected item on Mavericks)
  16. QuickLook (doesn't stay where you put it on Mavericks - every time you select a new file the QuickLook window centers itself)
  17. windows (some windows shrink in height by a few pixels every so often when an app with open windows is launched - e.g. Safari, TextEdit, Xcode, etc)
  18. save-dialogs (⌘D no longer selects the "Don't save" option on Mavericks)

This list (probably non-exhaustive as I'm sure I'll find more bugs and terrible design decisions in the next few weeks) is only things where Snow Leopard and Mavericks can be compared. It gets much, much bigger if you include all of the problems on Mavericks that don't have Snow Leopard (problem-free) equivalents. Problems that I would not have expected from Apple coming from Snow Leopard. Many of the new features since Lion feel half-assed and poorly designed. I'm especially looking at you, Mac App Store and iBooks.

Keep in mind that these problems are all observed on a fresh install of Mavericks with no weird setups and on a recent-ish, officially supported mac.

I'm not gonna lie, there a lot of things about Mavericks that I think are cool and that I really like, which is why I'm using it (side-by-side with Snow Leopard), other than the fact that I just NEED Mavericks for certain things. But all of these little issues make it really frustrating to use and I reach the end of my nerves almost every single day when sometimes one problem occurs after another, after another, in an almost comedic fashion.

Anyway, at least the folder icons have remained nice and orderly throughout all these years- DOH!!

I am planning to order a new MBP 15" Retina. I'd like it to come with 10.9 so I can move to 10.10 on my own time frame. How long after 10.10 officially ships, will it appear on new Macs?

If there are no changes tomorrow to the 15" MPB, I assume that even if I get one with 10.10, I can install 10.9 on it as long as I can boot into 10.9 from an external drive that I already have, right?

Make sure to download the Mavericks installer now while you still can. It might disappear from the App Store as early as tomorrow morning.

If you order from Apple Online you'll probably get 10.10, because their turnaround times are typically only a day or two to ship (new models excluded).

You might be able to still get a rMBP with 10.9 in an Apple shop or reseller for a few weeks at least depending on their inventory levels. You can always ask or check with the retailer what OS it comes with since I think it says on the box.

Failing that you can always downgrade so long as you have that Mavericks installer. You'll have to wipe the drive since Apple doesn't allow installing an older OS over a newer one.

This is the first release of OS X & related software I'm not interested in installing.

The mess they've made of iOS was bad enough. I can't have an office full of workstations that look like android phones for hyperactive 9 year olds.

This may be where we get off the train.

I agree but do not get off the train yet. Soon flatness and colors will be gone again or tweaked the way they should. People do not like them that much as some people are trying to convince us.

There are still good applications not inspiring joy-joy feelings with every button. Meaning: There are subtile apps made for work. I despise the new default calculator on Yosemite and the one shown here is no better. I will try to copy the old one over. There are simple solutions.

You are late to the party MacRumors.. I've had several Yosemite updated apps since DP4 I think..

All tho I believe Apple is holding off brand new Yosemite-Only apps for launch day, so that during the keynote on Thursday they can show off some Yosemite ready apps built with Swift and etc.

And of course to make their usual "Apps for Yosemite" list in the App Store like they did with iOS 7, 8 and etc.

name them I've scoured the mac app store (on 10.10 gm 3) and can't find anything; i wanna try out extensions but **** p.cal it costs $ lol.

I must say I'm quite surprised by the large amount of people who bash the new OS look. Also I can't understand what people have against the iOS 7/8 look? I think it's beautifully designed and I love the minimalistic approach. When I look at iOS 6 now I don't like it. On my Mac Pro, am still on mountain lion and wasn't interested in upgrading untill I saw some of the new features of yosemite as well as how beautiful it looks. The whole finder app look complaints are also so weird to me? I like its friendly new smile and I can't see this reference people make to the OS looking like it was designed by a child. I guess we are all different and have our own view on things. First OS release in a while that has me excited again. Now let's all hold thumbs it's not gonna be a lag fest :)

Cautious Until WiFi Fixed on IOS 8.0.2

As much as I'd love to upgrade right away when this hits the internet, I'm waiting to see if anyone is having WiFi issues that's still not resolved after the release of IOS 8.x. for iPhones and iPads. Apple acknowledges the WiFi issue as you can find in several of the forums, but for me, especially on my iPads, I'm struggling to stay connected and continue to experience poor throughput even with many of the suggestions posted by users.

I normally trust Apple's updates, but this last one taught me that Apple is moving more towards MS's approach to let the consumer act as a beta tester on their consumer releases then patch.

Calculator apps look really cool, but we don't need 3 calculators... (Notifications one and then skeuomorphic Dashboard calculator is STILL THERE for whatever reason, driving me insane..)

Temhawk,

For what it's worth...

I tried the desktop sizing options just now on Yosemite, and all the options work as expected. Never had an issue with it on Mavericks either. Maybe if you are using a graphic that's larger than the resolution of the desktop they would seem to have no effect? I tried putting up an image that's smaller than the desktop and all the options had an effect on that one.

The Date Modified field for Safari downloads does not get set to 1-24-1984, this also never happened on Mavericks either.

Of course, your mileage may vary :)

I still have a wi-fi bug!

Everything works great for me on the latest public beta, wifi is better than under mavericks.
