Some Ebay sellers, even reliable ones, sell you Applecare, then 2 months later cancel it and collect the refund, i didnt know this scam was going on until a few people started highlighting it on this forum.

I'm dubious this could even happen. Once you register it with Apple, it's tied to your name and your computer. How could the reseller possibly cancel it?

So any suggestion ? Are ebay sellers ok or is better to spend 100 -120 euros more and get from Apple? Here in Europe there is a reseller from Asutralia who is sending only the codes for 99-120 euros. He is selling basically only applecare with 99.4% positive feedback...I guess is good but the fact that he can erase my insurance after 2 months is holding me back and I was thinking to go to the apple store!!

I actually did some research over internet and I will buy it from apple. I saw that actually a seller who is not sending you te box can cancle your policy and get money back from apple (he has the proof of purchase you do not have) whilst you do not have the proof of purchase and you can't complain to apple about that since they will ask fo that. Actually I saw it happens to few people over the forum that went to fix their mac and found the applecare was expired even if the code was ok at the begining. Thank you for the help!!

Well, the seller I bought it from sent me the box. I don't think I'd buy from eBay and only get the code. There's no reason they can't send the box, as well.

Can you guys link me to these instances, I've only came across one so far, and it wasn't even on this forum.

Wow, I would also like to know. I just bought AppleCare from Ebay from a seller called Memorymate. I registered it with AppleCare but so far the registration process is still 'in-progress'. This was now over 2 weeks ago and I still have no confirmation from Apple.

How long does it normally take?

I just found this.

Apparently it can be cancelled.

I would look at the user's ratings, look at what they've sold recently but probably go back a while, not just the first two couple of pages. Oh, and get the box!

That's an interesting, (and some would say ingenious) way of pulling off a scam.

I was going to go to eBay to get my Applecare but now I'm not so sure

Why would an established seller even risk scamming you for so little? You would get a refund by invoking Paypal and could get the seller's account cancelled. Biggest risk would be the fact that your deadline for getting Applecare may pass if you cut it fine.

I don't know why, but I would never get Applecare from anywhere except directly from Apple.

Amazon

If you want to save some money and feel safe then you can get the Apple Care from Amazon.com

It took mine 5 minutes to register.

They do not cancel your insurance after 2 days. They just wait and probably few of them will do after 2-3 months, you will never find out unless your mac broke or you watch your apple care every 2 days....so you will give a positive feedback and no one will notice. I have looked at e-bay and no one is sending the box....

Yeah, the tradeoff seems to be they will not send you the box. The guy I just bought from ($159) was asking an additional $40 for the box. Code registered with no problems and I got confirmation within a few minutes.

I think the idea that a seller would try and return it for a refund is a little silly and alarmist (concrete proof that this has happened, please, not just evidence that it's possible). But just in case, I've politely asked my seller (bestelectronicsandgames) for some assurance that this will not happen (or, at the very least, alerting him that I know it's possible and that I'm on guard). And you can be sure I will be checking in regularly to make sure the policy is still active.

Thanks a lot. Apparently Apple had some trouble with their registration database. I called them and after 20 Minutes on the phone they were able to enter the registration number into their computer.

Now I only hope that the eBay-seller does not cancel my AppleCare. He seemed to be very pushy about 'getting ONLY positive Feedback' ...

The problem is people always leave positive feedback straight away after receiving their Applecare, so you cant find out their experiences later on.

For a refund from Apple they ask you to send your Plan Agreement Number plus proof of purchase. (See T&C below)
I'm a bit confused, by Plan Agreement Number do they mean the number that is on the slip of paper that is in the box, or the number that Apple issue you with when you put your plan into action?
Obviously if it's the former then the seller could get a refund but if it's the later then he won't know the number so how could he claim a refund?

From the Applecare terms and conditions:

5. Cancellation
You may cancel this Plan at any time for any reason. If you decide to cancel either call Apple at the telephone number below, or send or fax written notice with your Plan Agreement Number to AppleCare Administration, P.O. Box 149125, Austin, TX 78714 — 9125, U.S. (fax number 512 — 674 — 8125). A copy of the Plan’s original proof of purchase must accompany your notice. Unless local law provides otherwise, if you cancel within thirty (30) days of your Plan’s purchase, or receipt of these Terms and Conditions, whichever occurs later, you will receive a full refund less the value of any service provided under the Plan. If you cancel more than thirty (30) days after your receipt of this Plan, you will receive a pro rata refund of the original purchase price, based on the percentage of unexpired Coverage Period, less (a) a cancellation fee of twenty-five ($25 USD) dollars or ten percent (10%) of the pro-rata amount, whichever is less, and (b) the value of any service provided to you under the Plan. Unless applicable local law provides otherwise, Apple may cancel this Plan if service parts for the Covered Equipment become unavailable, upon thirty (30) days’ prior written notice. If Apple cancels this Plan, you will receive a pro-rata refund for the Plan’s unexpired term.

I have posted this question on a few threads to get an answer. If a TC is purchase with the MBP, does the ebay or amazon applecare warranty cover the TC?

Wow does eBay get a bad rap around here. Yes you have to be careful however people making blanket staments like,

"I dont trust anyone on eBay"

are beyond paranoid and really making statements like that does a huge disservice to not only eBay but also the people on this forum as it could scare some people away from using eBay and thus saving some money.

The bottom line with ebay is this. If your a smart shopper, pay through Paypal, and buy only from people with great feedback then you have absolutely nothing to worry about. I have been using eBay for over 10 years, in fact I joined eBay the very first week they went live, and have only had 2 problems and in both those cases I wound up getting my money back. Overall I have purchased over 600 items from eBay and again I only had a problem with 2 and each of those were resolved.

The people that refuse to use eBay simply have no clue what they are missing. Obviously the choice whether or not to use eBay is a personal one and everyone has the right to choose as they wish however to say that nobody can be trusted on eBay is honestly one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. The honest people on eBay vastly outnumber the dishonest and eBay's feedback system makes it very easy to figure out.

As for people canceling your Apple plan 3 months down the road. Sorry but I am just not buying it. I am not saying it hasn't happened before. What I am saying is that legitimate sellers would never do this and thus risk getting their eBay account cancelled. A lot of these people make a living on eBay now and many of them have worked their butt of for years getting their feedback ratings up high. Again it all comes back to buying from legitimate sellers with great feedback ratings. You show me proof of a single eBay seller with a rating over 100 that has pulled this scam and then I will believe it. Until then I dont buy it for a second and the people that got burned by this scam most certainly bought from people with low feedback ratings and if they had purchased it through Paypal they still would have been protected. As for people buying Apple Care without the box, well that is just stupid and its nobody fault but your own if you get burned. A legit AppleCare comes in a box so why anyone would agree to buy one without one is beyond my understanding.

memorymate

So I contacted an ebay seller, memorymate, regarding this applecare switcheroo stuff:

ME
Dear memorymate,

I've heard rumors that some AppleCare eBay sellers do not send the
original packaging because they hold on to the UPC, then cancel the
AppleCare service they have sold a few months down the road and collect
a refund from Apple (leaving the buyer shafted when he goes to the store for service, realizing then that he no longer is covered). What guarantee do your
buyers have that you will not do this?

memorymate
What sort of a guarantee do you expect? Don't you realise that if there are sellers out there who are doing what you suggest, none of them would actually admit to it? If you're that paranoid buy from Apple.
Otherwise read our feedback and search the forums. No one has ever accused us of doing what you suggest.
-memorymate

ME
Dear memorymate,
Why is it that you do not provide the box / UPC to buyers? Shipping
couldn't be more than $5...

memorymate
Why is that you keep asking stupid questions sport? Who's going to address it, send it out and keep track of all the additional paperwork??? Since when is admin work free genius? UR banned now. What a timewaster...
-memorymate

This guy is a total a$$. I just wanted to make contact with him, see how trustworthy he seemed (not that emails can tell you much, but still...).
I now definitely do not want to buy from this tool.
Does anyone have experience with another Applecare reseller on eBay that they could recommend?

I have posted this question on a few threads to get an answer. If a TC is purchase with the MBP, does the ebay or amazon applecare warranty cover the TC?

Applecare is Applecare, doesn't matter where you buy it. Yes, your TC will be covered.

Just for contrast, this is how it went down with my seller when I broached the subject:

ME
Thanks again. One more question: Please don't take offense, but I've read some reports recently of eBay sellers of AppleCare waiting a little while after the purchase and then quietly contacting Apple to cancel the policy for a refund, which the buyer would not discover until they tried to use the policy. What assurance can you give me that this will not happen?

BESTELECTRONICSANDGAMES
well i have and would never do that just look at my feedback!!!! i just don't see why i would do something like that

ME
I'm sure you wouldn't, and yes, your feedback was enough to make me comfortable buying from you. But you might consider specifically addressing this practice in future AppleCare listings (and stating in no uncertain terms that you would NEVER do this) so as to reassure those who are less trusting. There are a lot of folks on some of the bigger Mac forums that are convinced this will happen if they buy their AppleCare on eBay.

BESTELECTRONICSANDGAMES
ill be sure to state in my listings! thanks for the information cause i didnt even know there bad sellers out there doing that and ill let my buyers know i would never do that!!!

That's indeed a stark contrast, Tybee.
That's all it would take to make me comfortable, but memorymate had to be a jack off... I believe I'll buy from your seller.
