Hi All!

RE: 14.4 update Broke apple mail/gmail account.

I have tried all the suggestions in this thread. I deleted the google account in my system preferences/internet accounts. Then added it again as a new account. That removed the warnings and I thought I was back in business. However the gmail/mail seemed back online, but only halfway, the problem is I do not get ANY new mail.

I could send but CAN'T receive.

My workaround for now is a downloaded of the Google Mail app from the App Store. I can receive and send all my mail. The user interface is totally different and I don't get it yet. But everything is there and there is no loss of my critical info.

This may or may not be news to all!
But it stands to reason that if an app can send and receive mail, then the apple mail app is the culprit. Nothing on the Google end.

I just thought I would share my findings for those who can use the info.

I'm hoping a fix will be coming soon and I can get back to apple mail to get and send my gmail. I like the user interface after not having it, I appreciate it's convenience even more now.

Additionally: Does anybody have a feature rich email app (like mail or better?) that is handling both mail and gmail post 14.4? I'm interested. LMK

Good luck to all!

I can verify the same. During beta testing of 10.14.4 I ran into the inability to log into Gmail. To solve it I first Quit Mail. I went to System Preferences/Internet Accounts, highlighted my Gmail account and deleted it with the minus (-) sign. I then Quit System Preferences. I then went back to the same setting again and added my Gmail account with address and password. I then rebooted for good measure. The problem didn't return. I recall that fiddling around in the Mail app itself solved nothing. Internet Accounts is what got messed up.

There have been some quirky little behind-the-scenes changes to macOS in 10.14.4 that have broken various things. I'm currently trying to sort out with a developer what Apple did to break the Command-C command when using ANY version of CopyPaste Pro. There are several little quirks in the latest version of Safari, evident if you visit YouTube and attempt to use the video playing interface. My experience with Apple is that this small stuff is of no interest to them, entirely fitting with my theory that they've failed to scale the Mac computer side of the company as the company has grown. I can toss out a dozen further examples. I find it all very annoying and wish they'd pay close attention to Mac again and return to focusing on the customer rather than whatever their distraction-of-the-day may be. :-(

I see that a new version of CPP fixed Control-c, but Control-v is still broken. Did they say anything about that??

Thanks for the info Gannet. I used it to get my 4 Gmail accounts back up and running. Much appreciated!

Apple earlier this week released macOS Mojave 10.14.4, which has had the unfortunate side effect of rendering the Mail app unusable for some who use Gmail services for their email addresses.

After installing the macOS 10.14.4 update and opening the Mail app, Gmail users are asked to authenticate their email addresses using a Google web login form.

I had the same issue of Mail logging out of gmail, and tried some of the suggested workarounds to no avail.

SOLUTION: What worked for me is to copy the Mail app version from my backups before the 10.14.4 update, and put in utilities folder. I launched from utilities folder and has been working ever since with no problems.

Just make sure you quit out of Mail app, and copy the app from your Time Machine backup drive (Not from the Time Machine app).

Thanks! Rolling back to 10.14.3 Mail.app fixed the problem. Else the token would expire every hour.

Instead of using a different app, use a previous version of Mail app, pulled from your backup drive.
See instructions below:

I have a solution that can temporarily fix the problem is that quit the mail app and reopen it. It temporarily fixes the problem for me but after a few hours, it will stop working. Hope Apple can fix this as soon as possible.

Apple can fix this any time they want. At this point, it is clear they choose not to. It may be Google does something non-standard and Apple does not feel inclined to continue working with it and they are waiting for Google to work around Apple. Only Apple knows for sure. This will fester until one company or the other blinks. Users will suffer in the meantime.

...copy the Mail app version from my backups before the 10.14.4

This is good to know. But, if Apple has truly abandoned gmail compatibility, the only long term solution is switching to a different mail client or giving up gmail. The easier of those two will almost always be going to a different mail client. At some point, you have to bite the bullet and cut out the broken bits.

...several other forums are reporting this has been fixed, but this is still happening on two of my computers with 10.14.4? Can anyone report on whether in fact a fix has been issued...either by Apple or Google (as there appears to be confusion on who is to blame)...? Thanks

Things seem to be happening behind the scenes. For me it went from not working at all, to intermittent failure, where it remains today. A couple of days ago a new Google authentication via Safari request popped up (for me and other posters) that seems to make it less of a problem but has not fixed it completely. This request was tied to "macOS" generally instead of a specific application as it did in the past. Currently it will work for a few hours and then start getting connection problems. Quitting and restarting seems to correct it for a few hours.

Bottom line: 10.14.3 mail works flawlessly. 10.14.4 mail continues to have issues. Someone seems aware of it and changes are happening. So far, the changes are only on the Google side.

I spent hours with Apple Support yesterday trying to resolve this very issue. Why don't they just admit they messed up again? At least I would know what was wrong rather than the same old advice. Reinstall the OS they said. Two hours later no fix only lost settings and needed more after time to set up again. Don't they test before release? For the thousands it cost for the computer we deserve better.
[doublepost=1556644460][/doublepost]I spoke to Apple support now. They gave me the fix I needed.

You remove the gmail accounts.
Then reenter the data, but NOT using the gmail button. Instead use 'other mail', and enter the data with username and password.

It works perfectly now.

Here's a useful reply -- thanks!

I was recently strong-armed into upgrading to OS Mojave, when Apple failed multiple times on a simple repair to my 2016 MacBook Pro running OS High Sierra. I was handed, for free, a blingy new 2018 MacBook Pro that can only run Mojave. (Smartest possible attempts to downgrade it to HS were thwarted by latest Apple firmware.)

Admittedly I have a somewhat eclectic Apple Mail setup – with both POP and IMAP Mailboxes for a primary Gmail address. And admittedly my Mail Library is ginormous, containing over 10 years of business email history. However, Mojave Mail repeatedly hung when importing the High Sierra Mail Library – always when it began importing the "Sent" POP Mailbox.

I carefully attempted virtually every fix described in this now-6-page thread, with advice and support from every smart IT person in my circle. Nothing made a difference.

The idea of deleting and rebuilding Internet Accounts inside System Prefs made me nervous, so I saved that as a last resort. Finally, in desperation, I deleted and rebuilt the POP Internet Account. I was careful to move the Mail Library to the desktop during this procedure, then afterwards move it back to the hidden Library directory. This did in fact help Mojave Mail finish an import – but it severely compromised import of the POP Mailboxes.

I faced near-complete loss of critical business email history (since the saved on-disk POP Mailboxes were much more complete than the IMAP history on Google's servers). I concluded that my best option was to purchase a new-refurbished 2017 MacBook Pro from the online Apple Store, downgrade it to High Sierra (since it came with Mojave installed despite reassurances from all Apple phone reps!), and restore my data to it from a Time Machine backup.

I note that the HS Mail app on the refurbished 2017 machine had to import and re-index the ginormous Mail Library from the original 2016 machine. (And I did not touch the original builds of the Internet Accounts restored by the Time Machine backup.) However, this all went smoothly – a sign that my original Mail Library was not corrupted in any way.

My present conclusion: The Mojave Mail import scripts are disastrously buggy. I for one cannot risk another attempt to upgrade to Mojave unless and until I am 100% sure that Apple engineers have completed a fix.

Comments anyone? Did I miss something? Is Apple on the verge of fixing this mess?

For what it's worth, I too have had problems with a transition to Mojave. I found that the mail migration would commence each time I started apple Mail, but then hang. After many repeated restarts of Mail, current accounts were finally up to date.

My Mail also went in craze since a couple a weeks, all mail is deposed directly into the bin ... Basel, Switzerland Store is giving a $H!T on it, thank you very much!

I have the same issue.... and unfortunately the "other mail" suggestion has yet to solve it.

The Mail app import scripts are still buggy in the May 13 update of OS Mojave (10.14.5). The Mail app still gets stuck when importing a POP "Sent" Mailbox from my High Sierra Mail libraries, just like it did in the previous release of OS Mojave.

(The Mail libraries are not corrupt – import into a fresh copy of the Mail app in High Sierra works just fine.)

Apple, when will you fix this?

I have a fix! Use iCloud mail :)
I have an Apple-ID based on @bluewin.ch, and now it‘s exactly @icloud.com (my main mail-address now) that shows erratic behavior and shoving all incoming mail directly in the bin ... the dated store guys, letting me wait for 20 minutes, couldn't solve the issue ... i'm a little p.o. !

I did not update Mojave to 10.14.4.

10.14.5 is now available. Just updated to that. I hope Apple fixed the Gmail issue.

10.14.5 just made it worse - if that was at all possible.
Used to have intermittent "Login Failed" w/ the triangle exclamation mark (clicking on it was a workaround), and now I get the blank "Online Status". Removing the account and adding it as a regular mail account is not working. Not even with Gmail's "Application Password". This is so frustrating, and it's been going on for ages...

WTF? My mail has worked fine all along and now this afternoon it has gone fubar for the three gmail accounts I use (I don't use my iCloud account for anything and don't even check it). I'm on 10.14.5 with a mid-2018 MBP.

Same symptoms...I get the blank "Online Status" message when I click the triangle error icon.

Oh, and ditto for iOS 12.3.1 at about the same time.

Well, ATM it seems this was a temporary glitch for a few hours this afternoon. My gmail accounts appear to be back to normal, both on my MBP and iPhone.

I have 4 machines on Mojave, but on one of them (only), all my Gmail accounts are still f-ed up. This is in Mojave 10.14.6. They show as offline in Mail, I click to take them online, then it prompts me to authenticate in Safai, but the Google login page never opens in Safari (it will launch Safari if it's not open, but it doesn't direct to the login page). I deleted one account thinking I'd re-add it from scratch, but the same thing happens in System Prefs > Accounts as in Mail, prompt for Safari login that doesn't happen.
