Not surprised in the least. I work at a uni and we're seeing more and more Mac laptops these days, to the point I believe we now have an Apple rep on campus on a regular basis. We're also seeing more and more academics getting Mac's, I've configured about ten of 'em in the last four months whereas one a year was about average before. I do wish the lecturers would stop specifiying glossy screens when they're using them in an office right by a south-facing window though... I mean, it's a very NICE mirror but not that useful when it comes to doing actual work.

Don't get too excited about market share though, in the economic climate we have now people are either buying cheap netbooks or, for those that haven't been significantly affected, premium products. The sales drop-offs have come in the mid ground where people don't see a compelling reason to upgrade. As the economy recovers I think we'll see the market share creep downwards a bit as Dell, Tosh and HP sell more of their bread-and-butter offerings.

Just have a look around the library at my University. When I started 4 years ago I was the only one of the only ones with a mac. Now they are officially supported by the Uni and are popping up everywhere.

Scared yet Microsoft???:p

The writing is on the wall.

Look at MS' sliding stock over the past few years, drop in market share, lousy quarters, losing control of the Premium market, their lousy brand image (bargain bin), and Ballmer's public statements (most of which included Apple) over the past year.

Draw your own conclusions. The evidence is really piling up.

Congratulations. I'm curious, does Apple spell the words in the OS funny like I see on the British comedies. Also, does VoiceOver have a british accent and does it sound like the people on Little Britain? Inquiring minds want to know.

It's much better than that. You get that Alex chap doing the voice, us Brits get Stephen Fry.

"surges"
"5%"

hahaha. this made me laugh.

26% growth in one year (during a recession coinciding with UK price increases) is an impressive achievement.

The writing is on the wall.

Or people weren't buying laptops - just netbooks - until Windows 7 was released. Next quarter's results will be interesting.

A lot of those Macs will also be running W7 as a primary or secondary OS as well given the student discounts available so I guess Microsoft don't really care about the hardware it runs on.

nice to see also now that PCWORLD (a chain like bestbuy) has been completely redesigned on the interior with a little apple section where you can play with the imacs and macbooks. Before, they used to keep the apple laptops behind perspex screens that you couldn't remove.

I doubt sales of Windows laptops have stalled much prior to Windows 7's release as Microsoft and all major oems run the Windows upgrade program (buy a pc now and get Windows 7 once released) to stop computer sales dropping.

Certainly possible. That's why next quarter's sales will be interesting.

Now they just need to upgrade from Tiger and they'd be set.

I may have to go into PC World and see how there getting on, i would really like to play around with a mac before i bought it

. Useful information... Thanks

This is something I've never understood. Microsoft isn't a competitor to Apple... HP is. Dell is. Acer is. Microsoft just sells an operating System. Realistically, if Microsoft really wanted an effective strategy, they should advertise to Apple users saying something along the lines of "buy windows for your Mac so you don't have to re-buy your software!" "buy windows for your mac for your business applications!".
Microsoft shouldn't care if Acer or Apple are No.1 as long as the computer is running some version of Windows.

I find this quite interesting considering Apple does virtually Zero promotion on its computer hardware in the UK!

There are hardly any Apple stores other than in major cities. I got an email last week announcing a new store in Cardiff, Wales :-(

Microsoft has been plaguing the TV in the UK with their "I'm a PC" adverts which most people in the UK have no idea about the relationship to the fantastic Apple Ad's aired in the USA!!

The iPhone is on the TV a lot, but the only computer advert I can remember in recent years (yes I said years) was the MacBook Air envelope advert when it originally launched!

Imagine what they might do if they had more stores and actually bother to air the Mac vs PC adverts in the UK!

Now they just need to upgrade from Tiger and they'd be set.

Currys part of the same chain as PC World did have the old 21" imac, as well as the 24".. they havent got the new ones in yet.. they also have just the basic 13 inch laptops.. To be honest i dont know if its the aluminium macbook, or the pro. Either way, they need to update the line. They have Snow Leopard in boxes upstairs. Just not installed on the computers. lol :)

Good work apple, keep it up. They need more stores around the rest of the UK in my mind. They have quite a few in London. :)

Also, The Mac or Macintosh was never meant to be for everyone - it was for the crazy ones, the ones that want to change their lives, and the world. The artists, the avant garde. Now sure it wants to appeal to more users.

.

I just read this out loud to my office mates. We all just laughed. Thanks, its stuff like this that keeps me coming back here.

surge? hasn't the mac been at 4% for the last 10 years? 15%, sure...but up 1%?

I think surge is the wrong word, but don't dismiss a 1% growth as insignificant when you actually look at the numbers involved to achieve this!

After-all this is also through the worst ever world recession.

I can believe it. Just last week my daughter came home from her new high school all excited. Her headmaster announced to the school that they were replacing all their computers with new iMacs! She can't wait! (and now there's no need for me to buy one for her!:D )

Apple will start to do even better once they actually start updating their computers with current components. Some of their products are at least a year behind their competitors spec wise.
