I think Apple have gone too far with the "Doesn't it look nice, isn't it incredibly small and neat" philosophy.

Within reason, I couldn't give a toss about how incredibly small and neat it is. Just give me a decent quad core, decent graphics option(s) and USB3 and I will be over the moon. If that's in a box twice the size, does ANYONE really mind? I certainly do not.

I couldn't agree more! Who cares how tiny it is. It's sufficiently small for all applications, including sitting next to a dvd player as media hub. It could easily be twice as big and still be very nice and small. The pc competition doesn't seem to do anything similar at this size, it's usually many times bigger, almost as big as the usual CPUs.

But well, I don't think this is going to happen at all. I don't think there'll ever be a mac mid-tower again.

Am I the only one who really appreciates the small size of the Mini? I like every centimeter I can save on my desk.

But yeah, if there would be something like the G4 Cube, it would be great!

I also love the small size but my only concern with too small is the heat buildup issues.

That's true. But hey, we live in 2012, there has to be a solution to this problem.

The processor inside the mini can get up to slightly over 100 degrees Celsius. And there is a solution to the problem, it's called smcfancontrol.

Or a second solution. Its called don't buy one and save your self the hassle.

Sorry, I couldn't resist the joke.

Hi, was wondering what you realistically expect to see in the next base model of mac minis, and when you expect them to be released.
I'm talking here about the base model, we already have quad core, graphics card etc, but in more expensive models.

Base model:
2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Ivy Bridge)
4GB RAM
500GB 5400-rpm hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 4000

(basically the specs will match the base model of the Macbook Pro)

I also love the small size but my only concern with too small is the heat buildup issues.

... which in turn means Apple being restricted to lower power components and therefore underwhelming hardware options. 3.5GHz i7 would be nice!

Small size without compromise would be great. Unfortunately it is WITH compromise.

my guess at what will be in the latest update comes from past evidence. The 2011 lower range MBP had very similar stats to the current mini (2.3ghz i5 duel core) so the stats of the current MBP (2.5ghz duel core i5 intel 400) casts a shadow on the latest update. I predict, on the base model there will be a duel core 2.5ghz i5 ivy-bridge, intel 4000 graphics, 4gb of ram and usb 3s. Apart from that I don't expect any new updates.

an i7 in the base model of the mini is a bit optemistic, without the price soaring up dramatically.

Since when is 9to5mac THE channel that Apple uses to bring out news into the world

The only one who really knows what is released when is Apple and they haven't made any statement regarding any release date.....

We are just gonna have to wait until next week to find out what will come out :p

You are totally right. It was just a thought.

No problem, i was just commenting on all these guesses that are flying around :D

We will see if it is next week or maybe October , personally I hope it is next week though :p

And maybe prepare for the slight possibility its not being refreshed untill 3012.

Who said anything about base models?

It would just be nice to have a high-end i7 option. But we can't. Because Apple is obsessed with smallness and neatness to the detriment of functionality. And the Mini is so small and so neat that you can't fit a 100W TDP processor inside because there's no way to dissipate that amount of heat in such a small case.

I wouldn't mind if the Mini was just one product offering, satisfying a particular niche. But it isn't. If you don't want an All-in-One (especially one that can't be used as a monitor!) and you can't afford a Pro... then the Mini is your ONLY option. And then you find the hardware is so severely limited because of this stupid obsession with tiny-ness.

I love OS X and would dearly love to stay with Apple and ditch Windows. But Apple's ludicrously limited hardware choices try my patience to the limits.

well, since the VERY FIRST POST on this thread was about the base model, i thought that it would be the trend :D And about your "mac are so obsessed with smallness" just look at the chromebox, the minis only rival. That is even smaller and, has worse specs. The mini is marketed as the MINI for a reason. Im not saying that i wouldnt mind it getting a bit bigger, but asking it to be a full blown desktop is like asking a lawn mower to be a combine harvester, its not its job! I think that the mini furfills its job of being a super small slimline very well indeed and that it is by far the best computer of its size and power on the market.:p rant over ;)
