I came home to find my M1 mac mini (connected by HDMI to my hisense TV) colors completely washed out/wrong today (see pics here, sorry I can't seem to resize them to fit). This is clearly an output issue, as screen mirroring does not show any problems

Things I have tried that DID NOT work:

  • New HDMI Cable
  • Restart
  • SMC Reset
  • Color profile change
  • HDR disable/re-enable
  • restart tv
  • change input on tv
  • adjust tv settings
  • BetterDisplay
I'm at my wits end here, anyone have any clue on how to fix???

my Mac mini M1 had display issues with Tahoe, not this extreme tho.
perhaps the display is at fault as Bigwaff questioned.

now I hafta' unplug my HDMI cable when restating on a 2012 TV since they don't jive at first.

also if you have a MacBook, you can network screen share to see if the mini is good.

let us know!

Tagging on to Bigwaff's suggestion: another missing debug step is attaching a different computer to that hisense display.

Enabling HDR on an external screen with an M1 usually results in a washed out screen, looking like placed a white layer with some transparency overtop of the whole screen.

Turn off HDR for the TV in your Mac's Displays settings.

Just to be clear are you connecting HDMI to HDMI or are you using a dongle connected to one of the Thunderbolt ports? If so eliminate the dongle and connect directly via HDMI. I carry two dongles with display capabilities for my M1 laptop because handshake issues pop up between my dongles and specific screens/projectors I use (some are the same brand and model in different rooms).
