Still wish they kept the price down. Always like to see an industrial design refresh, but other than that, I don't see anything compelling in this new design that justifies a $100 bump.
+200 bump if you don't live in the US.

799 euro, vs. 999 euro for a MacBook.
The old Mini was 599 euro.
Looks like Apple wants to withdraw from a region where 1/3 of its revenue comes from.

I get the feeling my mini will be getting a SSD before years end. As for the screws I don't know, information seems to be coming so slowly about the specifics of the hardware. Need someone who is brave on these forums to get one and let us probe him for questions.

Sweet!!

Right... Now I'm waiting for Apple's incarnation of the UniBody MacPro. This aught to be interesting, wonder how much heavier it's gonna be....

Missing on key spec

The server version stayed the same price with all the added coolness also gained 7200rpm drives.

Thats a great improvement.

I'm that person. I want to rip it apart as soon as I get it. :)

whenever I see the mac mini server, I think of Neo in the Matrix when he meets Agent Smith for the first time.

Agreed. I think we can finally say goodbye to :apple:TV

Can someone explain how and why? You download iTunes movies and play them through HDMI to a TV, right? at 1080i, not p.

What about using the computer itself? Can your TV act as the monitor?

What about DVR capabilities?

Check out the 500GB Seagate Momentus XT hard drive. It's $129 on NewEgg, but it's a Solid State - mechanical hard drive hybrid. It stores 4GB of your most accessed files on the Solid State part, so those files are accessed the fastest.

lol that's the drive I'm already putting in. I just want to know what type of Torx they are. I can't tell if they're 5 or 6-star. :)

You're right but I'm beginning to think that they did this to justify the loss in sales for memory upgrades. Believe it or not, millions pay for the RAM upgrade. We only represent the geek culture and do it ourselves. So, like the iFixit article points out in step 6, "Gone are the days of the putty knife...you will be missed old friend..."

Mac mini + plex.should i say something else ?:)

Really nice design but the sharp rise in price in the UK for nothing other than a new design and better graphics does make it look like very poor value.

Choose the 2.66Ghz option, 4GB of RAM and the 500GB hard drive (very reasonable for a desktop computer) and you hit £932.01. £36.99 extra would buy you a 21.5" iMac with a 15% faster CPU, same RAM, same HDD, slightly poorer graphics but an LED IPS high res screen, mouse and keyboard all to boot. Hell, if you add the magic mouse and keyboard to the Mac Mini's spec then the 21.5" iMac comes out at £48.01 cheaper.

As nice as the new Mac Mini design is, the £649 model should have been £449 at the most.

Just did a quick search through the new Mac Mini's manual online; Looks like only the RAM is user-serviceable. I remember that Apple caught some flak with previous models, saying that there were no user-serviceable parts, and after enough pressure they eventually allowed people to open theirs and swap hard drives, but if they're going back to being strict...

Wow, this is one well built computer.
once my mbp dies (heaven forbid) i would just buy one of these and have it plugged up straight to my tv.
cant wait to see what happens to this thing when core2duos are no longer available.
it would be great to finally get a gpu that no longer uses your ram.
omg omg the wait till jan next year is killing me :p

From the image on macminicolo, it looks like 6-star

e-mail the folks on ifixit, then let us know how that drive works in the Mini. Let us know if it's loud, if it vibrates, etc...

Thanks.

what is plex?
www.plexapp.com

Plex Media Center for OS X

Plex bridges the gap between your Mac and your home theater, doing so with a visually appealing user interface that provides instant access to your media. Plex can play a wide range of video, audio and photo formats as well as online streaming audio and video. The real power of Plex is found in its library features: Organize your media into versatile libraries, automatically retrieve metadata from the Internet, and display your libraries using one of the visually stunning skins.

Not quite yet

Agreed. I think we can finally say goodbye to :apple:TV

I think it has potential for the home theatre but there are two problems for me:

1. No blu-ray. For a home theatre box this would be really nice. I'm really looking for a way to get rid of my PS3 for watching blu-ray movies...it gets hot and the fan gets really loud. :(

2. AppleTV interface. It's really easy to use and doesn't require a mouse. I'm not sure what Apple is up to but they either need to release an updated AppleTV or just kill it off and build the "big TV-friendly" interface into the mac mini and promote it as a home theatre box. I mean I love my AppleTV but if it had blu-ray that would be even better (or at least have 1080p videos available thru iTunes...but then you're going to need to upgrade that hard drive buddy!).

Finally a mac that looks like it will upgrade friendly the last gens minis were probaly the worst macs to upgrade out there
