I was waiting for years to get me an updated mac mini for the same 500,- base price.. now they release a way too high specced base model for 800... which is 900 euros in europe.. now im clueless on what to do. i cant buy the old one cuz its pretty much worthless and wont buy the new one cuz its way too much for what I need it for.. this is terrible.. a huge empty space in the market again.. I cant believe apple.. the smartest dumb company on the planet.

More like a low-end i3 processor for a high-end price.

better price! You can get a ryzen 2700x + 32gb ram + 512gb ssd +gtx 1060 (+board+case and psu) for 1200$. Compared to an i7, 8gb,512ssd for 1500$

there is a some serious magical apple tax in this!

The machine & options are great but the price is not
There's always that person...this isn't pcpartpicker.
I have a custom PC so I get where you're coming from but this is small as a NUC. Apple + size tax.

Wake me up when I can put "ryzen 2700x + 32gb ram + 512gb ssd +gtx 1060 (+board+case and psu) for 1200$" in a NUC.

It's disappointing the SSD can't be upgraded and Apple's pricing on the larger storage is highway robbery.

Beyond that, it's a decent machine but the Apple tax is just too high.
We technically don't know if the SSD can be upgraded or not, simply because we can't see it. It was buried in the 2014 model and was upgradable so I don't think it is a foregone conclusion that it can't be upgraded, especially because they reversed themselves with the memory.

Can't wait until next week when I can watch someone tear it apart. lol.

I've not looked at the 2014 model at all but don't the aftermarket SSDs for that generation rely on a thirdparty adaptor? Might have to wait before that/if it becomes available.

Oh my.

So now an updated mini is finally released and people are complaining. Wow. I wonder of those same people would be complaining if there was no update Yes...you bet they would.

Come on people, save some money and buy the new one. I bet the the new low end i3 and such are still faster that the current i5 junk. And you don’t need anything above a 256ssd (that’s what external hard storage is for).

I am just glad to see that the mini has not been discontinued.

8gen CPU, lots of RAM, lots of SSD, great networking. I'de like one to replace my Hackintosh.
My 6-core i7 Coffee Lake hackintosh has 16 gb RAM, 512 GB m.2 SSD, genuine Apple wifi/Bluetooth card and dual 4k. It was about $800 total. The $1700 mini has the same hardware but also the T2 chip, 4 Thunderbolt ports and a smaller form factor than my mini-ITX. So, not sure if I'd had even bought the new mini considering its cost to features.

6-core mainstream Intel Core processors didn't exist back then.

What are you saying, that the reason Apple haven't updated the Mini since 2014 is because they've been waiting for a 6 core processor? If you follow this logic then perhaps they should have waited another 10 years for whatever the latest tech might be at that point.

In the interim lot's of us have built our own Windows machines whilst Apple have sat there cogitating and you know what, we're very happy having made the shift.

I won't be moving back to a Mac anytime soon.

I'm pretty happy just got to decide if I can get by with the i3 or need to step up to the i5 for some light video editing. I expect egpu to really come down in price over the next few years so I am not super concerned about it.

My main gripe with my previous Mac mini mostly came down to the outdated io. For a 6 year old computer it is still chugging along great.

If I can get another 6 years out of the new one it will be money well spent.

Apple listened to us, we should be happy. This definitely leans more towards the pro Sumer, but I think it will fill the gap nicely for those who cannot afford a Mac pro.

Sorry for my question.
I have an old i7 3770k with geforce 1080 8gb and 16gb ram.
It is a good desktop for gaming but I have a lot of cable and noise for fan ( I. have also liquid system) and the minitower stoles a lot of space.
In this moment I use my MacBook Pro touch for Lightroom/photoshop and travel works but every time I am at home i need insert the MacBook Pro into stand and jack in power, DisplayPort and audio.

I saw the mini presentation and it is very compact and I think to change desktop and MacBook Pro with this mini for Lightroom and photoshop works.
MacBook Pro will work only for travel situation while the desktop will kicked out from my studio.

DO you think that this new mini with i7 upgrade can be good for photoshop/lightroom?

Seriously, what more could Apple have put into a "mini"? I think it's fair to say that they delivered.
A CPU and SSD that aren't soldered onto the logic board would have been nice. Apple's lack of future-proofing their devices has become so annoying. They pretend to pride themselves for being "green" yet all the stuff they make is disposable. Still a great update, don't get me wrong, but it's hard to say Apple isn't purposely making their products non-upgradeable. It's quite offensive, actually.

i would have liked an i9 CPU option (time will tell if we'll get that later) and an option for secondary internal storage, but, yes this is a pretty solid upgrade.

Op is a troll.

Looks to me I can start my ebay mac mini sales back up again.
Buy the base pull the i3 drop in an i5
add ram.

Cant wait to see an iFix it teardown
I like this!

Once the iMac is updated, it will be a better value than a specced-out Mac Mini.
Not for people that do not want an all in one. The two are apples and oranges.

The machine & options are great but the price is not

Go price some small form factor PCs from reputable sellers and you’ll see the Mini is in the realm of competitiveness.

I'm probably the least tech aware person on this forum. But have a question. The base model comes with a 128gb SSD. Kinda small for my needs. Is it possible to hook up an exterior HD that will work with the system? Not an SSD, but just the old style 1tb spinning platter ones. ?
I have a 2012 base mini, and love it. It works ok, a bit slow now. I had been looking at the NUC, but really don't want to use windows( I've used W10, and its fine),I just like the Mac OS. The NUC is a bit less for the same specs I think.

128/256 Gb Ram. 64 isn't enough -- I max that out (swapping) on my pro now. And my gosh, if they're putting a 3.5 jack on it (thank you very much) at least put it on the front where it's easy to use.

I can't think of a Mac that won't boot from an external drive, although I would recommend using the internal ssd or an external ssd for speed reasons.

I ran an iMac off of an external ssd thunderbolt drive for a few years, before I upgraded several months ago.
