Benchmarks doesn't say much. How does it feel??? Is it pretty fast or is it responding slow.???

Is it BETTER than expected, or worse?

What's your first opinion?

I have a 1GHz 12" powerbook (Rev. b) and a 700 MHz iMac. The new Mac mini is very similar to my powerbook. It doesn't seem sluggish and it is what I was expecting. I'll know more when I run some more apps. iLife 4 is preloaded and I haven't had a chance to load version 5.

Amazing how many people have ordered them despite all the ruckus about the latest line of laptops "still" being G4, etc.

I guess for that price, you really can't beat that deal!

I have:

1 GHz 1 GB RAM 60 GB HDD PB 17",

1.42 GHz 1 GB RAM 80 GB HDD Mini 23" Studio Display

1.8 GHz 2 GB RAM 250 GB HDD iMac G5 20 "

The Mini performs somewhere between the PB and the iMac-- as one would expect

Upgrading

Opening the case was just as described/shown in the video. It is a little tricky the first time, makes a disconcerting sound, and leaves some scrap plastic - but works.

Replacing the memory was very easy, although the one side of the DIMM clip is blocked from going completely down (to pop out the DIMM) by the shied in the back. It still came out ok.

The hardest part I found was putting the case back together... The first dozen or so tries I kept getting the back not lined up properly. The shielding was not slipping behind the case easily. This might have been made worse by the Airport Antenna hookup. I found that putting it back together all sides at a time worked much better rather than trying to do the front or back first...

Also remember to blow out any of the scrap plastic that is formed when opening the case...

Why doesnt Apple provide screws for their minis instead of having to use a broad knife and the possibilities of scratching the plastic. They carried this same design strategy from their iPod and Ipod minis.

Forgot to mention - the 256MB DIMM that came with it IS a PC3200.

Can anyone confirm that I can actually use this with a TV as my monitor? I spoke with the genius here at the Apple Store and he told me I could. I know you COULD use it to view photos and video, but I want it to use as my only "everyday" monitor. Some have said that the text is blurry, if that's the case, then it's pointless to use. I'm ready for the iMac G5. I'll keep this if I could use my TV. For reference, it's Sony 34XBR910.

Thanks!

no reason you shouldn't be able to, in fact, thats what I am doing. I purchased the DVI to video converter and am hooking her up via S-video to me tv right now. Will let you know how it goes.

Why would they use PC3200 if it only runs at PC2700? Surely it would increase their margin to not use more expensive RAM?

According to AI, it is just a supply issue and Apple will be using a combination of both PC2700 and PC3200.

Speaking of AI, should this bit in their report today trouble me?

...the first batch of minis to leave Foxconn's manufacturing facilities in Asia are reportedly running a custom build of Mac OS X 10.3.7 (build 7T21).
This is the first I've heard of this...does it mean anything in regards to upgrading to 10.3.8 or Tiger when the time comes? Or is this standard for new models introduced between OS releases?

Not to worry. when they package any new machine, they have to cutoff the software at some point-- so this is just necessary for any given production run.

The first thing that happens when you boot your mini is it checks software update for all the latest fixes/versions-- apply these and you are running the current level of Apple software,

As others have said-- Tiger runs just fine (I would expect it to)

You will go blind. Text will be way too blurry. Only good for pictures and movies.

I'd have to disagree..... especially since I am typing this on my mini that is hooked up to me tv. I, personally, have no problems with it at all. Looks fine to me.

Power Brick

Very good.

Wow that power brick aint small. How does it compare to the Mac Mini is size...and how long is the cable between them?

Thanks! The power brick is the same length, a bit over a third the width, and a bit shorter than the Mini. The cable between the Mini and the brick is about 6 feet (2m), and the cable between the brick and the wall plug is about the same length.

Hmmm....at what resolution do you have it? What kind of TV? I am using my sony 34xbr910 with a dvi cable. I'll give s-video a chance tomorrow. how much was the connector?
