Mac Mini's... no more eMacs

I am grateful that the eMacs have been discontinued. They are heavy! eMacs were just leftover pieces of G4 components and old faithful CRTs Apple just had to get rid of. CRTs just has to go. I'm glad they didn't decide on a G5 eMac... cause what's the point right? the iMac does all of that.

A budget Mac computer would be.. yes... the Mac Mini's. Good idea to 1) attract switchers with keyboards, mouse, and display... 2) use all of their G4 components (1.25 G4s).... 3) Push the LCD market and stop serving CRTs.... 4) prove that PCs aren't the only one making small ass computers. Schools will be using the iMac if needed as a eMac replacement. Mini Macs will be used to help support 3rd party LCD Screen companies and also help sell Mac's own LCDs. PowerMac G5 are at a low sale compared to the iMac, PowerBook, and iBooks. Which means, even if PowerMacs are sold well, the LCDs are definitely aren't selling too well comparatively. They needed to get that LCD market going. So it was a great job making the Mac Mini in an Aluminum casing maching a possible 20" Apple display. Plus the DVI cable, which kinda suggests... hmm it's a perfect fit for an Apple display.

Mac Mini's totally serve a "cool" factor... "Really it's that small?" or "my goodness the Cube idea is coming back and i'm sure you can stick a mac mini underneath a G4 Cube (WHICH YOU CAN!!)". But the specs or an eh... but lets not be too greedy here... it's a G4 1.25!! remember when you had a G4 500 and you were like... dude only a G4 1ghz can handle my graphics and record my music and do some good video editing.... IT does just that! With the specs which lies inbetween iBook and Powerbook, this is a powerful machine!

Expect some cool 3rd party addons i'm sure. With EyeTV gettin all famous with it's media center thang, i'm totally sure they will make a mini EyeTV mocking the same shape of the Mac Mini fitting perfectly underneath making your Mac Mini an Entertainment Center (aka... the presumed iHome). Imagine, a Mac Mini as your entertainment Center... that's insane! And a great look under your 42" LCD "silver" (must be matching), TV Screen. Bluetooh remote control... HD... It's going to be as hot as an iTrip on your iPod.

Mac Mini is going to be huge... or will be.

Its good news that the Mini's are now shipping.

I'm in the UK and I ordered on the day of the announcement, my ship date is still the 28th January. Hopefully, it will actually ship on this date.

Can't wait for people to start reviewing this thing..

Go to barefeats.com for some test they did of the G4 cube, tower and Mini compared, it's interesting. Keep in mind that the Mini fits underneath the Cube it's that small.

That's reassuring to hear. I ordered at about 1am UK time that night -the UK store was unusable for hours that day. Mine still says the 28th of January too.

I wonder why European orders are going out after US orders? Oh, hang on, this is Apple we're talking about...

Tell me about it. Trying to order from the Apple UK Store on the day of the announcement was a nightmare.

Hopefully, we will both get the Mini shipped on the 28th...

Doesn't a single user licence agreement, those supplied with the most basic version of OS', allow the software to be installed on as many machines as the user wishes, so long as only one version is running at anyone time?

For someone who works for a software company, I suggest you take the time to read the EULA

I suggest that you follow your own advice...

Here's the SLA for Panther:

http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/macosxpanther.html

2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.

A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time.

This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time.

You can find the Apple SLA's at http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/

Of particular note is the "Family Pack" license for 5 OS X installations.

http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/macosxfamily.html

Mac OS X Family Pack

ADDENDUM to Software License Agreement for Mac OS X

The first and second sentences of Section 2A of the Software License Agreement for Mac OS X are revised as follows:

A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that same household. By "household" we mean a person or persons who share the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home or condominium, but shall also extend to student members who are primary residents of that household but residing at a separate on-campus location. This license does not extend to business or commercial users.

The remainder of this Section 2 and all other terms and conditions of this Agreement remain in full force and effect.

It's also interesting that the above license specifically includes students while at university, but the Apple Store says that the family pack

"license does not extend to students who reside at a separate on-campus location or to business or commercial users."

LOL! I'm also glad that we're getting the same quoted date, mine says the 28th as well. Hopefully that will be the Mac Mini, Shuffle and iWork suite all in one shot - hell, I would be glad to get any one of them at the moment! :D

Mine's out for delivery as well, but I'm not home. Might have to finish work at home today. :) I'll post photo's, xbench, etc when it arrives, if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Mine's at home, and I'm stuck at work!

I ordered my mini with 512MB and Bluetooth as soon as I could after the Keynote, and Fedex says it's been delivered (8:58AM on 21-Jan). Too bad it'll be hours until I can get to it!

But kudos to Apple for actually getting them out on time. :)

FedEx clearance delay

When I checked my tracking # this morning, it shows my mini in Indianapolis w/ a staus of "clearance delay". The delivery date is still 1/21. Anybody else have this or know what it means?

I just got mine from Fedex now. It really is amazing how small it is. The packaging is VERY similar to that of the iPod.

Will report later to let you know how it works.

I just got my mini unpacked. It's amazing how small it is!

I do wish they would use the sleek black boxes they have for my other mac stuff. The white box does look nice though.

You must have tracked it just after it arrived in Indianapolis.

at 7:44 Int'l Shipment release Indianapolis

This is just passing the shipment thru Customs (because it originated overseas)

Alright. I have it shared on my kvm with my pc, and it works amazing well. Since my kvm was ps2, I had to purchase a belkin ps2->usb adapter, but it all works great.

This new mac is very cool. Although it is very small, the external power supply is actually about 1/4 the size of the whole computer.

Amazingly fast as well.

So my fedex says estimated delivery 1-24-05 by 10:30 am.

I just woke up, went online to see where it was, and its IN FRONT OF MY DOOR.
I love you fedex!!! Too bad I have to go to class until 6 tonight, but I am so friggin happy right now. :)

I just got in to work, and there's my box waiting for me (I had it shipped to me at work)! Guess I have something to do tonight! :D :D
