how much memory can the mini hold?

How much memory will the mini hold in the future?

I think I need 1 GB to start out. When denser memory is available, will the mini accept it? Some designs don't accept more memory than the intended maximum, no matter how dense the RAM is. This recently burned me with my home PC.

If 1 GB is the maximum forever, this machine is not for me. If it isn't, I will buy one soon. This is a critical issue for me.

Currently 1GB is the limit. However, I read somewhere that Apple was working to increase it to 2GB via a PC2700 stick.

One can hope, but in the least you should expect that the Mac mini will not meet your needs. The Mac mini was never designed to meet all the needs of Mac users.

Re Para 2. I've been nurturing the same thoughts although I'd probably wait for the next OSX and, perhaps, a hardware upgrade, before splashing out on the mini. I think I was also waiting for someone else (like you) to point this out - thus making the purchase a little easier on the mind ... so thanks :)

A few die-hard PC using friends have become interested enough in the Mac mini to be cracking open the piggy bank and counting their pennies (so to speak) to see if they can pick one up. I have offered them advice similar to your sentiment, ie: wait until the release of Tiger. Apart from the obvious advantage of getting OS X 10.4 for free instead of having to fork out again in a few months, it lets all the early adopters find the (inevitable) problems and shortcomings on the mini, run all the benchmarks, and lets all the third-party manufacturers start to build some nice accessories.

So yeah...I like your plan of waiting a bit ;)

Unlike most people here, I rarely defend Apple's marketing practices -- but this is an exception.

There are a huge number of people who have bought these low-end Dells -- thus a huge potential market for switchers. Now I ask you, are these people happy with their computers?

Between viruses, add-ons that are not as plug-and-play as advertised, etc., I believe there are a large group of potential new customers for Apple out there who simply don't need a new monitor, keyboard or mouse -- they need a new OS.

But . . . the biggest problem remains this: where will these people buy this machine? Where are the retailers? (The Apple stores are clearly not going to serve a mass market.) Also, when will Apple start to market its computer line with the same level of aggressiveness that they have the iPod?

I have yet seen ads for Mac Miini, however I've seen tons of Dell ads on TV, Radio. Apple needs a new ad agency!

To ways to advertise. Either pay for it directly, or let the media do for you. When is the last time did you see Dell get this much press off of a couple products?

Apple Ad Agency = Think Secret

The rumors of the MacMini spread around the globe. The equiivalent media campaign would have costs tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars.

It looks at though Apple has enough problems keeping up with current demand on the Mini, the last thing it needs to do right now is to create more demand, and upset customers with not being able to ship timely.

No doubt ads will come once manufacturing has ramped up.

Apple advertises correctly, in my opinion. Well, they could stand to do a little more, but not much in my opinion (maybe get a TV spot or two every year or two).

Ooh. Who wants to bet they're going to do a Super Bowl ad this year?

Prob will be an iPod ad tho.

Unfortunately, It'll prob be an iPod ad if they do one. Or something about their NFL/Audible deal...

Side note:
There was no iMac G5 commercial - It's sad that they've abandoned their TV ads for the computers. Where have they machine or OS X ads been? How many people have no clue about OS X. Sad. :(

I liked the ad for the PM really nice, I would like them to start again.....

Windows users get more and more frustrated with time becasue their pc starts to go slower when they add on more apps, and also trough time.
How is OS X different from that

I am shocked Apple charges so much for their 1 GB stick of RAM. I went ahead and got 512 MB for my Mac Mini because at 75 bucks it cost right at the same Price I could buy it anywhere else.

That said, Dell and other PC makers always charge way more for RAM because they think idiot consumers will just pay it.

Yeah I am one of those frustrated windows users. I have to reformat and reload my harddrive every year. Ugghh!

I just noticed that ComputerWorld had a poll asking if a Mac mini would be good for the enterprise. At first, I thought "no, why would anyone want it there?" but then, I thought about using MS Office and doing all the little things that drone on each day and it's perfect for the office. It takes very little space and could be put into action with a minimum of fuss.

Perhaps, we'll see the machine as another Oracle purchase? It would be interesting to see if the Mac mini has any profound effect on PeopleSoft's software running on Mac OS X.

WE NEED REVIEWS!

Come guys we need REVIEWS of this baby mac. Plug in the mac mini, and write what you like and not. How's performance, etc?

How fast is the 2.5" drive? Is this a real bottleneck?

Thanks in advance!

Please someone help those of us waiting to get ours by telling us about it!!!!

Let's see who the first 3rd party manufacturer is to come up with a hub that sits under the Mini, that has the same profile, but 1.5" high etc., has 3 firewire and 3 usb ports on the side, as well as a 3.5" firewire drive enclosure...

Windows gets so slow that I recommend to everyone I know to backup, format, and reinstall Windows at least once a year. Sometimes I do it every six months if I have time.

A clean registry makes Windows Happy! So far it seems that the Macs get faster and better performance as Apple releases new versions of the OS.

How much would such a device cost? Do you know something about one that is in the works?

How long have you been using an Apple?

OS X when it first came out was coded new from the ground up. Even the compiler was new. As OS X matured the code was cleaned up and the compilers became more efficient. The result was a faster overall experience. However OS X did have to leave a few old legacy machines behind as well as legacy software.

When Jaguar first appeared, Apple had to fight off a class action lawsuit from it's user base because it wouldn't fully support quartz with the 1 - 2 year old 16mb graphics cards. Apple did finally get quartz to run crippled on these machines but they certainly didn't run the OS GUI elements faster.

Now Apple is at a cross-roads again, they are moving on to 64bit G5 processors. They want to optimize the code and compilers for the future and not look back. They have a chance to take a commanding lead in this market before Microsoft can get out a good 64 bit OS themselves. Apple wants to add gui elements that need at least 64 mb graphics cards and take the lead in this area as well.

Even if they sell 10 million mac minis, Apple is not going to let the mini define their cutting edge. This mini defines the minimum configuration for the future. It definitely runs panther well, and it will probably run the first release of Tiger at an acceptable level. However It will not run faster and faster with each release.

In fact I wouldn't be surprized if Apple updates the mini with 512mb of ram, and a 64mb GPU about the same time that
Tiger is released in 5 months.
I thought Tiger was released this week?

p.s.... this has been typed in my mini hooked up to me tv. :)
