Well, to be fair, I did add RAM, a SuperDrive and Airport Extreme to it, so I guess that takes just a little longer!
BTW, did you buy a 1.25 or a 1.42?
purell16 said:Ive finally decided to get a mac mini. I dont know whether to get the 1.25 with an 80BG hard drive and 512MB Ram......or get the 1.42 with 80GB and 512mb Ram.....is the slightly faster processor really going to be noticable since I will only be doing thinks like typing papers, surfing the interet, listening to music, and playing around in iPhoto??
Hoffer said:Since you're upgrading to the 80 gig drive anyway. I'd get the 1.42 system. It's only $50 more. You won't notice a difference in what you've listed, but you may find new uses for your mini and wish you had those extra megahertz.

OK, a few truths:
1. At this price point, ALL manufacturers must cut corners.
2. At this price point, ALL manufacturers try to up sell.
OK, so what is the difference between Dell, et al, and Apple's strategy?

FreeState said:Mine shipped too with no tracking ID... Im guessing I will have it Friday (hence the change from the 22nd to the 21st on the order page)
LinuxGigolo said:Ordered at 11:58am ET on January 11th. It just shipped within the past few hours because I looked at it earlier and the ship status was 'Open'.
EDIT: I also just got the shipment email confirming this! YAY!
nightowl said:Interesting article, but something that lots of "computer people" don't get is that there is a huge number of people out there that do nothing but email, surf the internet, type the occasional document, and that's about it. Why do they need a floppy drive, need liquid cooling, and about 3/4s of the negatives listed? I'll be working on no less than 4-5 people to switch to the mini when the time comes to "upgrade" their current setups.![]()

My comment was meant to be a serious one; I think the mini is excellent for its target group but feel there is an 'empty niche' between it (the mini) and the iMac. I have a G4 tower (originally 400mHz now 800mHz), 2 hard drives almost full, and just wanting to upgrade soon. However my Philips 17in LCD screen is excellent so I really don't want an iMac 'with a head'. I know there are many like me. Yes I know I could get a G5 tower but I'm a lecturer so even with ed discount the bangs per buck ratio is not that good for me on a small income.oingoboingo said:Buy a 1.8GHz PowerMac G5 and hide it under the desk where no-one will see it. Take an empty Corn Flakes box, or something which approximates the size that you personally think the Mac mini G5 should be, and draw some appropriate Apple logos on there with your favourite crayons. Glue a few pieces of white string to the back of the Corn Flakes box to make it look like there are cables coming out of it (or optionally 'upgrade' to wireless Bluetooth by scribbling "TEH BLUET0oTH uPGRADX055!!!111" on the box). Call up your friends to come over and marvel at your new "Mac mini G5".
Problem solved! No need to wait for that party-pooper Jobs to make the machine you want.

Grab it before it's pulled!

Of course it would be nice if the mini (or something like it) had a G5 processor, but the mini is all about the US $499 price point (or $799 for us in Australia...or $719 if you use the .edu discount), and it would be really difficult to see Apple releasing a compact, limited expansion headless G5-class machine, positioned somewhere between the Mac mini and the iMac G5. I don't think it's technically impossible (although not in an enclosure as small as the mini's), but from a "We all know Apple too well for this" angle, I think it is near impossible...well at the moment anyway.
Out of interest, what specific shortcomings would hold you back from upgrading your current G4 system to a 1.42GHz mini? The jump from your current 800MHz (and I'm assuming a 100MHz FSB) to 1.42GHz on a 167MHz FSB would be a very pleasant change. You could chain up your current drives in FireWire enclosures (or just buy a new 200GB drive for about AU$200 and swap over stuff onto that).
