Jobs basically gave us a minimum price for one, in the earnings call, talking about not being able to make a good enough Mac for $x00 dollars. So they have a threshold, but the Mini is above that currenlty, so it's not like they've ruled out the Mini style Mac in the future.

He was talking about a Notebook Computer (with Display), not something like the Mac Mini.

Steve was talking about all computers when he said "We do not compete in the $500 market, because we do not make junk."

Almost a reckless statement since the original Mini was $499.

To clarify the quote from the conference call:
"I think what we want to do is deliver an increasing level of value to these customers. There are some customers which we choose not to serve. We don't know how to make a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk. And our DNA will not let us ship that."

Maybe steve should check out newegg/ebuyer etc

He is not interested in selling to (the majority of) people who shop at those places (and similar ones).

He believes he has a product worth the price charged and even as his competition gets cheaper in price and higher in quality, his product continues to see exceptionally strong growth driving continually record profits even in an economy that was on the skids long before this month.

I hope the mini is not dead. I would like to purchase two (one for the parents) but I don't want the current one. It's a little long in the tooth.

Apple seriously needs to update the mini or go on and kill it. This is getting ridiculous.

No chance of a tower under $1000. More chance of the Mini being updated than seeing a midrange tower of any kind.
I agree. I will crap myself in shock if Apple ever produces a mid-range tower. It's only a pipe-dream and has been wished for for many years. Keep wishing.

this is bad the mac mini was the world of portable computers you could easily take it any where you needed to go

Sounds like this could be true. The Mac Mini shares most of its parts with its MacBook siblings. If the Mini were to be refreshed, it would've happened along side the MacBook redesign.

unless they didn't because they aren't going to use macbook parts anymore.

maybe they are going to use parts more in line with the imacs and thus a new mini will be announced whenever they refresh the imacs.

Looks like no update coming soon:

Apple debunks Mac Mini, iMac rumor

doesn't mean there won't be an update, it's just not coming before the end of the year.

and it was a wise move. a lot of folks were probably going to wait for the 'new' machines and would have kept waiting until next summer if need be. which would have cut sales in the most crucial retail time of the year.

and by not updating any more products they can focus on dealing with any issues in the current updates. like the trackpad issue

This is a real shame. I've been waiting since February for a refresh and although some aspects of my situation have changed, one has not.
I'm now in a position where I could afford to go for a MacBook or an iMac if I wanted to. The money is now there...

What has not changed is that they still do not fill my need. I need a small, headless, up-to-date Mac. I don't need an extra screen. I don't want an extra screen. I'd love an iMac or MacBook one day, but both are simply outside of my requirements at the moment, even taking the cost out of the equation.

And this is what sucks.

Budget is not the only reason for favouring the Mac Mini. And keeping it behind spec is great for many who have flexible budgets to opt for the pricier model, and those who want the Mini add extreme profit to Apple.
But to those of us for whom it's not a price choice, the other models simply don't cut it. And I'm stuck waiting, until it's other updated or official completely dropped from their lineup.
