If it's to stay at current prices, I expect Apple may simply put a GMA X3100 in the Mini, & add a few other nominal updates. IMO, there's unlikely to be any seismic changes to this model.

Personally, I'd love them to add at least a 9400 Nvidia in there & add other (even better) graphics options, without increasing the price too much; but that's unrealistic. If Apple give it major updates, I expect the price will reflect this & rise significantly. Either way, some people will be left disappointed.

Good points. Perhaps they'll pull a "MacBook" and have a low-end Mini on Santa Rosa and high-end(s) on 9400m.

na

I don't know.. I think they will do a complete mac mini overhaul, making it slimmer, aluminum, lighter and extremely fast. With more memory and all.. it will be a beautiful thing. The apple logo on it will light up in the dark.. it will also be so small. I cannot wait.

you sound mighty confident :D , why change the font though?

....is this Steve , teasing us [again]

edit>good call mods .

If they DARE use GMA x3100, I'll…I'll…

Apple should use the 9400M, or at the least GMA x4500!

Kind of ironic if they kill the mini while other manufacturers are starting to make there own mini computers.

It was my first apple product and I now need another mini computer to mount behind a TV. I would wait for a new mini if it was announced in the near future.

Extremely "ironic", considering its popularity & that we're in a recession. But I think they'll keep it going for the very reasons you state & that the low-end iMac simply isn't suitable for many consumers. Apple may feel that they've alienated enough users as it is by killing off Firewire on MBs & matte screen options on MBPs.

Agreed. There's enough price differentiation between the 2 Minis to do just that without massively compromising profits.

If we could get even just ONE new Mac mini, it would be neat.
I really believe that Apple will use just one platform for it and I don't believe that the nvidia 9400m is that much more expensive than a X3100/X4500 one. The price increase on the new MB is probably due to the unibody enclosure (irrelevent for the Mac mini) and the LED-BL display (irrelevant as well).

I believe they can update the Mac mini to the new MB specs for the current prices (but that could mean without firewire...)
$599, 2.00GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Superdrive, 9400m IGP
$799, 2.40GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Superdrive, 9400m IGP
and they probably could go all the way to:
$999, 2.53GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Superdrive, 9400m IGP
if they wanted to (and depending on what will be the specs of the next iMacs).

But I wouldn't mind paying a little more and get a MBP-type motherboard (including FW800 and an Expresscard slot) but still with the 9400m IGP:
$699, 2.00GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Superdrive, 9400m IGP, FW800, EC
$899, 2.40GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Superdrive, 9400m IGP, FW800, EC

Apple could update the design of the enclosure anyway so that it could look like a "folded" MB/MBP without the battery (7.7"x7.7"x1.4"):
- motherboard/ports and probably the HDD on the 1st "floor".
- superdrive and some open volume (air flow) on the upper "floor".
- powered by a MBP-type power supply (85W) or the new 24" LED-BL display (magsafe + locking adapter).

A $800 and $900 desktop with out a video card with it's own ram? Apple is just asking for pystar to beat them.

Just shup up with your dedicated vram and psystar, not everybody needs dedicated gpus, the Mac mini is a MINI desktop it's not a mid-range tower desktop system, what do you want to do with your Mac mini: Quad SLI?

FWIW, psystar have beaten themselves, they're just about to close doors, it's a question of months (if not weeks).:p

so a $800+ desktop should have on board video and only 1 display? with no slot to add a better video card.

It's the price that is why it's needed on board video is ok at $500.

You're really overestimating Psystar. Their boxes are really not that impresive.

Yup, that's what it'll be (if a revision is even released).

You're not going to see that. Otherwise you'll have a piece of junk just like all those $500-$800 Windows pieces of junk. And Apple won't sell junk. Just accept it.

I just want an Apple TV and Mac Mini hybrid with DVR capabilities and wow I'll be one happy camper.

I think there's a chance for quad-core in the upcoming iMacs but it will be a very expensive option, and you won't see real performance benefits until Snow Leopard comes out anyway.

And not the speediest option either without taking advantage of those extras cores.

The two current options are the $851 Q9100 running at 2.26 ghz and the $1038 2.53ghz QX9300. There is also a $318 2.0ghz Q9000 coming early next year. The mobile core i7 quad cores aren't coming until late 2009.

Best computer? Its stuck two years in the past. It was a good idea when released almost four years ago (save not including a mouse and keyboard part) , but they've let it effectively rot since to the point where it makes a $250 emachines look like some sort of pro machine.

You likely will have to wait for the cable co to get tur2way / OCAP working and even then. Will apple likely the idea of being forced to have cable co software on there box + having use parts of the cable co gui.
