Home theater with Mini-DisplayPort and email/web through Mini-DVI? Sounds like the Mac Mini might bridge the gap between AppleTV and desktop computing.

Why this attitude? Most of the better monitors in the last few years supported DVI!

As I already said, this goes against BYODKM, as it forces EVERY switcher to buy at least ONE adapter to use ANY display they might have.
I don't see what the problem is really. From Apples standpoint this is a transitional machine that gives the user a choice to move to Display Port or not. If an adapter is needed it won't cost much and Apple is likely to include one anyway.

Considering the huge advantages offered up by Display Port it is not like Apple can hold off forever. On the other hand for this market they can't offer just Display Port. Look at it this way Apple sometimes gets on the wrong bleeding edge track, that isn't the case with Display Port, so let's give them more credit and less whine.

Apple, give us a classical DVI Dual-link (like it was till now) + a Mini DisplayPort.
The best way, to have dual-screen setup on a Mac mini.

great news, but at least one mini DVI to DVI adapter better be included in the package.

(edit: while the above is still true, I just realized that I have one mini DVI to DVI and one VGA adapter that came with my MBA!)

Umm, no you don't, not if they came with the MBA. That's Micro-DVI. Mini-DVI is the port that's on the previous model MacBook's (the white or black plastic).

The foot print of Mac Mini could be the same than MBA's SuperDrive. It wouldn't be too bad if they dropped the optical drive from Mini to make it cheaper.

I don't think that's likely, it's very hard to squeeze that much technology in there and keep it cool. I would find a slight increase in size to the same design as the Time Capsule to be far more likely, especially because it could then be thinner, which is the focus right now.

I hope they give it a Full DVI and a Mini Display Port. Apple are getting rid of Mini/Micro DVI, why would they put it on the Mini?

One full DVI + one MDP on the Mini
One/two full DL-DVI + one/two MDP on the Mac Pro

You're right. I stand corrected.

Just a thought... I wonder if we will ever see black Apple logos on the back of MacBooks?

What's that got to do with the Mac Mini supporting dual displays?

And if it were to be black anyway, it wouldn't be illuminated.

Socket or Solder?

Big question: will the new mini have its cpu in a socket or will it be soldered like the laptops? I would like to pop a core2quad cpu in it like the core2duo I stuck in my core solo macmini to give it extra umpf.

Do you think this would allow me to run dual 30" from the mini?

Yes. Mini DisplayPort to DVI Dual-Link.

The current Mini can't, but if this one has Mini DisplayPort, then yes it will.

Awesome!

Now I can get rid of that behemoth large HP at church to drive our sanctuary projector! Replaced by a Mini!!!

(the HP has served 4+ years and is a great machine, nonetheless...)

If the new Mini ends up supporting two monitors and much better graphics performance, Apple will probably get an extra $900 out of my wallet for a second ACD...

Should be an interesting keynote.

I really think it would make more sense to just include two DisplayPorts. After all, it's backward compatible with DVI and VGA.

Having two display options, may reposition the mini as the new "thin client" of choice in businesses. For example, in call centers, customer service and accounts/billing you frequently use multiple monitors.

would this have any effect on the possibility of an HDMI port?

No. As been stated hundreds of times before, Apple has publicly said that they won't use HDMI on their computers because of its resolution limitations (and I suspect its licensing fees).

It doesn't make sense to me. If Apple's switching to DisplayPort, why bother with the mini-DVI at all? Just put one or two mini-DisplayPorts on there (or hell, since it isn't a laptop, a full DisplayPort) and put a mini-DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter in the box. Everyone's happy and Apple doesn't confuse their port strategy with the mix-and-match.

I wonder how two of the new cinema displays would look next to each other. That black thick bezel would be doubled in the middle

Mini is getting better and better! Dual hard drives, dual displays, quad-core in the future, man, with upgradable video card, it'll be another Cube!

That way you can listen to Beethoven while you work ;)

DON'T be surprised if there is no firewire

I can see it now, when they announce a new mini, and there is no firewire the community will go up in arms, falling all over themselves if the new mini does NOT have firewire.

The odds are good that the mini will not have firewire if you follow the trends set by the MacBook Air and MacBook. I don't understand it either, but I won't be surprised. Even if I buy a new mini, I will still need another firewire Mac to support my audio interface. I won't be happy, but I won't be surprised either.

And if the new mini gains better graphics processing it will have been a decent trade-off.
