Just wondering if there is a difference when connecting via HDMI or Thunderbolt 3? Which is better?
If thunderbolt 3, any recommendation on adapters to HDMI?

Thanks in advance

I think if there was any difference between T3 and HDMI that they would be negligible. I agree with Red, go with the HDMI.

Hi there,

Unfortunately, I have a trouble with connecting my Mac mini 2018 with an LG 4K TV. "No signal" was showed up.

Environment
  • Mac mini 2018. Detailed specs are below.
  • LG Electronics OLED65C8PUA 65-Inch 4K
  • HDMI 2.0(4K@60Hz) cable
  • MacBook Pro 2014
  • LG 27UK850-W
Summary of compatibilities.
  • Mac mini was compatible with LG 27UK850-W with both HDMI and USB3.
  • LG Electronics OLED65C8PUA was compatible with MacBook Pro 2014 with the HDMI cable.
  • Screen Sharing from my laptop to Mac mini. Mac mini recognized the TV as "LG TV".
Summary of incompatibility
  • Mac mini seems to be incompatible with the TV.
Since MacBook Pro 2014 is compatible with the TV, Mac mini should be compatible with the TV.

Any feedback is appreciated

I was successful with Sony oled but looks the same with my late 2014 mini

Thank you for the reply.

I used an Apple's USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter and it worked!

Did you try to contact LG or Apple on your issue?

Could you try if the TV recognizes HDR? https://4kmedia.org/

Thanks for your reply. I posted almost the same article on Apple's discussion forum and was going to contact LG.

I’m having exactly the same issue, the TV is not recognizing the Mac Mini connected via HDMI 2.0 cable.

Any solutions?

Same model? Have you tried a different HDMI port? Have you tried on a monitor at a lower resolution (1080p) & then hot-plug to your OLED TV?

What about a NVRAM or PRAM reset?

Why not just use a ATV4k? Better experience using something made for the TV. I ditched HTPC's long ago as soon as streaming players came out. Never looked back.

Personally, I’ll use a Mac mini instead of Apple TV because:

- Adblock on YT
- Torrent possible, especially 4K where streaming can lag
- Use for Roon

My experience is only with a 2012 Panasonic Plasma but there is no question units like ATV and Roku output FAR superior to my Plasma over my 2012 Mac Mini using HDMI. It doesn't have anything to do with video file quality as I have had 25GB 1080p Bluray rips on my Mini and it will still get out performed by 1080p Roku streaming. The video signal is just cleaner for whatever reason and doesn't crush blacks and lose shadow detail nearly as much.

I do agree with others though that the Mini to a TV is still awesome using a keyboard and magic trackpad.

I get this on a Mac Mini 2014 on both of my LG TV's (4K OLED and 4K LCD), I have to go to inputs/sources on the remote and click HDMI 1 (or whatever port it is connected - even if the connection source is greyed out I click OK / the centre nub on the remote). It seems the LG needs to wake up to the signal. Also I tap a few keys on my wireless keyboard, then turn on the TV.

I use a HDMI - HDMI connection cable that works fine at passing 4K content from a PS4 Pro.

Hello there

I'll receive mine next week and plug it to my Panasonic OLED TV.

Lucky. Panasonic OLED is ranked the best under most categories during the TV shootouts they had in the UK. I've read Panasonic picked up the engineers who worked on the Kuro's back in the day when Panasonic bought the patents from Pioneer.

Problem is they don't sell Panasonic OLED in the U.S. for some reason.

You can still do 2 of those things. ATV on the TV, mini as a computer. You can airplay roon to the ATV. I don't use apple music directly on the ATV, instead I airplay to it and control with my phone.
Torrents on the mini. I have run a plex server for years(it can do music too). My setup has automatic torrenting/newsgroups, puts it in folders, shows up nice a pretty in plex and infuse and is viewable on anything. 4k too. I also have a tablo(4 tuner OTA) and a program that rips the shows from that and also drops it in folders automatically which shows up in plex/infuse. Works very much like a DVR. 1000+ BD movies, hundreds of 4k, tons of tv. All with a ATV4k and a PC/Mini(moving it all to the new mini). Connected to a Denon receiver to a LG OLED. Atmos from netflix, HD audio from my rips.
