My dad just ordered a mini for our house so that there can be a shared computer for everyone to use and put their schedules on. It will be in the kitchen so we can also stream music from our computers to it while we are eating or making dinner. Anyways, we ordered it monday (27th) and he just received an e-mail saying it had shipped. If this rumor was true, I would think our e-mail would get the same message, but it didn't. I would be a little upset if we ordered the last possible day before the changed the orders. It will still be a good computer for what we need.
Same here, ordered monday, but mine still say "sent to manufacturing". There is a 10 day price reduction guarantee, but if there's an update the guarantee won't hold even though one of the new ones has the same config as the one I ordered, right?

I would say a mini update is imminent, they know they need to release some new hardware after the intel announcement and they only really have 2 options; iBook and Mac Mini..

ShadOW :D

Please. I'd like to see 512MB RAM standard, soldered onto the MB, with a free RAM slot capable of holding a 1 GB stick.

so when can we expect the update? My girlfriend is in the market for one and I just want an estimated time until update. If its like 3 months then ill buy now, if its one week she can wait...

If they update, the current models would all get discounted. Based on the current prices, I'd guess maybe $50. So in theory, you could get a $50 price match. Most likely if you're in the queue now, and an update is immenent, you'd get the new model anyways.

Whats with the "alarm"? Updates are a good thing. Mini has been out for several months now with no update. And the updates to imacs and emacs haven't been that impressive.

The iMacs I thought had a very good update... Faster prosesser, Bigger HD, More ram, Better graphics card the only thing that could have made it better was a price drop.

Dammit, I just canceled my order, I had to. Have been waiting and waiting, figured "what the hell" and ordered two days ago, but now I have to wait to july 7... But no longer than that!!

A friend of mine wants to convert his office (three people) to Macs on the cheap with Minis. This is, of course, the $64,000 question. Although I told him to hang on till July 12 to see if anything comes up.

It kinda makes you wonder what this Special Apple Event is going to be on July 11th? We all thought that it was going to be about the iPod and Postcasting, but thats already been announced. So what now?

New MacMini's?
New iBooks?
New PowerBooks?

Hmmm........

As a current mini owner, I would like to see any firmware updates be passed down.

I'm mostly looking for the ability to use a 2gb DIMM. I would also like more video RAM, but I understand that's not as easily upgraded.

Everything else, I'm pretty happy with so far. The mini is my 4th Mac since 1985. I still have my previous Mac, a Umax c500.

Terribly flimsy basis for a rumor, but I'll hold some hope out that there's something to it. My SO has been dying for me to let her buy a mini but I keep telling her to wait just a little longer, checking the boards every day. Mid July is our deadline.

mini schmini, make with the laptop update already. I see Apple's giving away ipod minis for all new laptop/desktop purchases as the new student promo. Woohoo!

Exactly. Plus, the store still shows both versions of the mini available for shipping "same business day." I wouldn't be surprised to see the mini updated, but this French thing sounds a little flimsy.

I'm still trying to figure out how Apple's going to market an updated Mac that's essentially been EOLd before it even goes on sale.

You want to put a 2 GB PC2700 SODIMM in a Mac Mini? *boggle* If you can even find one, the RAM is worth more than the computer!

Heres hoping the GPU gets a bump along with the ram.

I doubt they will upgrade video card in the mini. Maybe they cant place anything bigger than Rad9200 in such a small enclosure. Even if they could I doubt they'll do it, cuz eMac is a higher-end machine and has 9600 64MB

Maybe it's the first MacTel box?

Maybe it'll be the first MacTel box, bundled with iLife, iWork, and Numbers? Lord knows they'll need to include the last two, since there aren't any apps available for a MacTel box right now.

Plus, if it was Pentium-based it'd have enough horsepower to play HD/264, something the Mini can barely do now.

No, that wouldn't piss off the people who paid $999 for a LEASE on a development box ;)

I don't think we can expect anything intel *this* soon (they said 2006...)

intel mac

no they said we should expect intel mac by 2006 and all macs intell by 2007 so by them using the word "by" means it could happen anytime. The dev dont want mini they need more power then a mini could ever offer I thought the mini was going to be the fist intel mac I will just have to wait and see. I am waiting for an ibook intel mac which I think will happen after the mini. then will be the powerbook then last but not least the powermac.

a safe bet they will

Actually the mini uses the exact same architecture as the eMac and was identical in specs to the shipping eMac when it debuted. I would expect a revision now to have the same specs as he current eMac.

Grr Argh!

This would make me quite upset. More at apple, a teeny tiny bit at listening to rumor sites. First many rumor sites hinted the rumor being "mac mini update not coming!" as of about Mid-Late June, so I ordered my suped-up mac mini on June 24th. Then just days after I hear about the update-rumor raising from the dead due to this July 7th media event by Apple. Now I'm hearing this, and if this is true - by July 7th or 11th I'll be out of luck in gaining anything from apple by mere days. If this happens, I will be infuriated by apple for updating just a couple weeks after my purchase (which won't even be coming until tomorrow or friday). The reason they offer the 10-calender-days offer is because they know that anytime after that you will actually physically have your now-obsolete product. If this doesn't happen though, I'll be absolutely delighted. I hope such an update doesn't occur just so I can have the "current" or "newest" model for at least a month or two before having the "old" model. 10-days, they should extend that warrenty to 30-calender days after receiving the product so you're on top of the world for at least a month... Or at least do better about not shipping out a product that's not being rushed (ex: overnight shipping etc.) if they have something better waiting in the wings such as a update mini. I will really be frying my beans if the processor, hard drive, and video card are better. Please, may I just have a hip machine for at least a month? Then come august, whatever apple wants to do - fire away. Anybody with me on this one?

Or if not, if this does happen - anybody have any encouraging ideas of what I can say/do to make myself feel better. The only thing I can think of is being like "well I got the first generation mini, it'll be a collectors item like the first issue of a comic." But that's all I can think of, either way I'll probably just sound defensive about being outdated by Steve & Crew... :(

Heh, not me, sucker! ;) I was in the same boat but have opted to wait because the specs just aren't quiiite good enough for me, and because it just seemed logical that there would be SOME kind of updates for at least some Mac products this summer. Personally, I don't really care about getting the latest/greatest; if the specs had been sufficient (particularly regarding hard drive speed and video ram), I would have bought my mini already and not really cared about future updates. So if the current specs were good enough for you, then who cares? Besides, look at it this way: any revisions to the mini between now and June are just very minor changes to a machine that's in effect less than a year away from obsolescence anyway. I don't think anybody's expecting anything really spectacular next month, assuming there even is an update. But I hope there is; I don't want to have to wait till September to buy (or be let down by a disappointing revision)...

'Course bear in mind that the rumors about there being no imminent update came from trusted sources like thinksecret, whereas everybody who's hinted there would be one has been basing it on some kind of magic apple store shipping time hoo-doo. This may yet turn out to be more of the same wishful thinking.

For What It's Worth…

I ordered 4 Mac Mini's for a client here in NYC.

They were the 1.25 Models and one of them was suped up to include a superdrive.

The 3 standards are listed as "Preparing Shipment"

And the one Superdrive is "Sent to Manufacturing"

They were ordered on Friday evening.

haha brianus, awesome name and thanks for the suggestion. I guess overall you're right, every Mac will become obsolete when the Intel transition begins, or not to the Power-PC faithfuls who refuse to no longer be part of the MacCult and remain anti-intel and just survive off the powerpc macs as long as is possibly sustainable. I guess I'll just hop on the mactel's the minute there release to avoid the scare I'm suffering from now. Thanks to Iorek, I am breathing a slight sigh of relief that he didn't get a similar message this french-rumor-customer did. If you can Iorek, keep us (aka me) posted on any new developments such as the models shipping without any update info etc. When is it pretty safe to say no new updates are being made currently, Iorek ordered on Friday - one was even sent to manufacturing. Is the moment the ship them the day we can say that at least models ordered up until today WILL NOT be updated? Do you think there will be a time where this rumor can be laid to rest prior to July 7th, or like the iBook one will it just keep on popping up and hiding over and over until the 11th and then finally what will be will be definitively? Well, here's hoping to no Mac Mini updates for another Month *cheers* ... :/
