I've been having this problem too. I thought it was my crappy linksys router so I paid no attention to it. I'm glad that everyone else has the same issue, whoo hoo!!! Now come on fix!!!!

What did AppleCare say was wrong to justify 4 returns, which is ridiculous for anyone to have to deal with, especially for high-end personal computer systems?

Does anyone know if KPs caused by a software issue, which most of us assume is the case in relation to the 4.5.10 update, can permanently damage the computer?

Here is the response I got from the apple tech:
Apple Engineering has received reports of this symptom and are investigating. Further updates, if any, may come by way of a software update, Knowledge Base article or software release. My engineers would like to gather some info to help them solve this issue, which by the way has nothing to so your internet service provider, only the apple. If you would mind answering these questions for me It would help us

What brand and model number of access point (Wireless Router) was the machine connecting to?
What version of the firmware was running on that access point? ATT should be able to help determine this info.
What security method is this access point configured to use?
What network name is the access point advertising? This is the name of the network you click on and join.
Have you confirmed that the customer published their Apple System Profiler report to the web? To do this click on the apple icon then about this mac then more info. Once system profiler is open click on file and there is a send to apple option.

The thing that really irritates me is when I call the store or go into one and the salespeople say,' Ive never heard anything like this before..never ever ever'... and I wonder why since I've had four of these in a row do the same thing. I think it has to do with the type of wireless modem that is in use. My friend just got a macbookpro and he said he doesn't have any problems.

It is really hard to find information about this problem online, I'm glad I found this forum.

Well Apple is aware of the issue, They're just not saying anything. I just came back from the Staten Island, NY Apple Store and all of their Mac's have been reverted back to 10.4.9.

If you recall a few posts back, I was at the store when their Mac's were at 10.4.10 and they blamed the issue on their T1 lines. So it's obvious that they know 10.4.10 is cuasing the problem if they reverted to 10.4.9.

Original Apple Discussion boards message

(Originally posted June 25, after message find link to discussion board):

Hi Folks - just chiming in on this topic. I have a brand-new 13" MacBook, and as soon as I applied the 10.4.10 update (plus all the other updates that came up), I started having intermittent connection losses or slowdowns and even worse, kernel panics about every 15 minutes. So... since this was a raffle prize (yes, this 'book was a prize, cost me $50 to win it gloat gloat), I decided that I would go ahead and reformat/reinstall. All went well until I applied the 10.4.10 update. Guess what? Connection loss galore. I have found that I can usually clear it up by cycling the Airport power and/or sleeping/waking the Book, but that's a pain in the butt. No solution as of yet, so I guess that for portable purposes I'll be still using the 1.42 G4 iBook instead of my shiny new Intel-based Macbook. Oh, the irony.

Follow-up: So far, the only real fix (after simply ignoring the machine and leaving it in the bag for a week or so) was to YET ONCE AGAIN revert the machine back to 10.4.8 by using the reinstall DVD. This time, I studiously avoid the updates in the hope that a patch will be released like, ummm, soon. Other than some minor sleep and Bluetooth oddities, it's performing as it should. Will I be re-attempting the 10.4.10 update? Only if someone puts a couple of Franklins in my PayPal account to cover for the PITA factor.

I have been having problems with my airport after updating to 10.4.10. Whenever I boot my macbook up or wake it up from sleep my airport connects briefly to my router and then drops the connection, it will not connect to my network at all unless I go into internet connect and reselect my network. I never had any problems before 10.4.10 and I hope apple fixes this issue soon. If anyone has any suggestions to what maybe wrong could you PM me. (Yes my network is selected as defult.)

Hmmm me too

I have a 15" MBP Core 2, and I'm getting kernel panics too. I only just bought my machine today as well! At first I thought it was the extra ram I installed, but after reading this and other threads (and looking at my panic.log) it does indeed seem to be the wireless drivers.

It seems like plugging it into the power fixed it for me (I had 2 kernel panics in 1 hour) on battery, since plugging it in I've had 0 (2 hours later).

I guess for now just try running your laptop on power when using WIFI, until a fix comes out.

no kernel panics here. the only thing that I have noticed is that my wife, primary user of the MacBook, says that the internet is a lot slower.

This is exactly what I am experiencing. What type of modem/dsl service are you using? And are you using a secured connection? I have learned that the problem has something to do with that--when our network was temp. open it had no kernel panics.

I went to the store and the 'mac genius' said that my problem is my AT&T service and my 2wire modem. The modem is brand new and the latest model they have produced ---one of the apple telephone support people told me that the macbook pro with work with this modem without problems.

I guess Im going to end up returning this machine and getting a sony or dell notebook.

Same problem with little different details. Still under warranty. Went away for 2 months with no internet access. When came back took to upgrade to 10.4.10 and problem started. Kernel panic once.
I took it the the Mac service so they could charge me $50 for reinstalling the OS. No Kernel panic since (4 days) but Airport yes. I have to reboot MB not just Airport. Link DIR 625 router brand new. Upgraded firmware on it but no help. I'm new to Mac. Wanted to get out of the Windows deadly cycle of new OS every 2 years then stop support for old one. They better fix this issue or they're just a same as Microsoft.

My MacBook Pro SR 2.4GHz does not want to play nicely with my parents Billion 5100W, my parters CD MacBook works fine, but not mine, agrivating!

But at home, they both work fine with our Billion 7402VGP.

I've averaging 1 kernel panic a day since buying my SR MBP a week ago. I'm using a Linksys N router. It's getting really annoying. It seems to be happening consistently when it starts loading www.digg.com in Firefox. Anyone else see that?

Also, will trading my linksys router for an airport extreme solve the issue? Or is it all routers and are we just waiting for a fix?

I've had my MBP 3 weeks, no kernel panics. Just loaded digg.com on my Dlink Dir-655 N router, it loaded without any issues.

AT&T dsl

Is anyone else using SBC Global Yahoo A&T DSL service? The store where I purchased my computer now tells me that this problem is not with Apple, but with AT&T's service. He says it is not compatible with the Airport card. He suggested I purchase an apple wireless modem.

I'm just wondering if we all have the same service provider...this whole situation is crazy imho.

I'm in Australia, running ADSL2 over a WPA connection. I have a netgear wireless router that has always worked (and is still working) with my macs (I have an old powerbook and a mac mini)

Ignore the genius. I work with this stuff everyday, and it's definitely just a software issue that Apple will be able to fix, and one that looks like it only came about with the latest updates. I'd say for now just run your laptop on power if you can, and I'd almost guarantee that either this week or next there will be an update from Apple.

I've had Sony VAIOs and Dells. They are not even close in terms of build quality or stability that the mac book pro is. I've had macs for a few years now, and this is the first time I've even seen a kernel panic. I don't work for Apple or anything like that, but I think you'll regret it if you swap it for an inferior machine. ;)

Thanks for the update! This is my very first apple computer, so I am so sad that it has been a complete disaster. I contacted the apple care support and they said no updates so far....

My macbook was doing fine, but all of a sudden yesterday, I started losing wifi, lost it twice. First time I had to restart to get it back. Second time I just turned my aiport card off and back on and that fixed it.

I have the same issue on my MBP.

Any solution other than reinstalling the OS, no DVD with me.

Thanks

back to 10.4.9

For what it's worth, both my MB and my partner's MBP (both c2d, less than 4 months old) using an Airport Extreme Base Station N (all made by Apple in China), and I was experiencing many of the same symptoms everyone else was (on both computers--although only the MB experienced a KP because of it). I did an archive and install on both computers (which was a pain on the MBP because I had to reinstall Office and uninstall and reinstall Adobe CS3 to get everything back to working--and our wireless printing is no longer working wirelessly--but it is working after a driver reinstall via USB--although the wireless capability was touted as such a nice feature with Airport) to 10.4.8, then did the combo update to 10.4.9. I updated the Airport to 2007-002 (but did NOT update to 2007-003, because I've read about other people experiencing similar issues after installing the -003 update), and for the last 6 days, neither computer had experienced any of the old symptoms after the 10.4.10 update. As far as I can tell, this is a software issue, it seems to affect many builds and varieties of MBs and MBPs and all sorts of routers, INCLUDING Apple's Airport Extreme Base Station, and it can only be fixed through the work around people have been describing with intalling earlier OS
Airport code or plugging in the modem or doing an archive and install (or clean install) and reverting back to 10.4.9.

I am an Apple newbie, and I love the design of the computer and OS (with the exception of 10.4.10, for obvious reasons), but I have been disappointed by the problems related to this update, especially when Apple has made such a big deal in its ads about Vista having problems (which I understand are even a bigger pain than what we have been dealing with) and it's "it just works" motto (when the printer doesn't "just work" wirelessly--it sometimes has worked, but seems to forget how to work from time to time...right now, it's memory is short). Although I haven't seen ANY computer ads from Apple for the last couple of weeks, at least--it's been all iPhone, all the time.

Those are my more than two cents worth.
